Emotional Times As We Pick Up The Van From The Shipping Port - Our Van Life Europe Adventure Begins!

- Nothing about RORO shipping our van to Europe has been easy. It was been nerve racking, expensive, emotional and a true exercise in patience. As the cargo ship with our van gets closer we have to drive from northern France and into Antwerp, Belgium to pick up our self converted van that we have called home for almost five years. The van has been on the on the ship for almost 4 weeks and even though we secured the house portion of the van, we were forced to give them the keys. Our home and belongings are in the hand of the shipping company. We couldn't be more nervous as we get the call and race to the port to pick up our van and begin our exciting van life adventure through Europe.

The next time yall ship your van, and they ask you to leave the keys, give them a set of dummy keys. No one would be the wiser. Too much of a risk to hand over the keys to your home.
We will for sure be more prepared next time!

That would not address the issue with the drip damage nor the attempt to access through the roof, so risking a fire or emergency situation by not leavingvthe correct keys is stupid!!
But what happens when customs wants to search?
If they can’t search it they won’t allow the van through customs.

Sooooo relieved to see your home in tact! The fan is a minor issue to what could have been catastrophic. So sad that there are so many who think nothing of destroying and stealing. Now it’s on to the rest of Europe and the adventures therein.

I hope you find out what dripped down your windshield and hood. I wonder if the windshield is permanently etched. Remember to check all areas under the hood and drip line for other possible damage. It looks like it was rather caustic. I'm glad you're back in your Home. The Kit Kats certainly are! ❤
I'm so relieved the "break-in" wasn't what I was fearing and that, all in all, the van arrived safe and sound and you two are back on the road in your own little home! Vanna and G are so adorable looking glad to be home!

G is so adorable. The older gentleman who spouts off when he is unhappy! I love them both but G cracks me up! I am glad your van arrived safe (albeit with a few issues) and importantly, without having been robbed. I hope your weather changes soon. I think you should explore Spain first where it’s warm and sunny! The Expawers are a van life couple who live in Andalusia and travel all around Europe. Their weather currently appears beautiful!! I am currently building out a van and some day I hope to get over to Europe with it. I am a major WWI and WWII history buff. I can’t wait to follow you as you explore the history of Europe and its beauty. Many European countries tried to rebuild after the wars in a manner that kept their history. So some buildings are new but may look historic and some are still very historic and somehow survived two world wars. May I recommend a podcast, Dan Carlin’s Blueprint for Armageddon, which is an amazing history of WWI. You might find it interesting as you will be traveling right where those battles were fought. It’s long and fascinating. Walk in peace guys and keep the videos coming!

WD40 should be able to remove it spray a little on the window an wipe off..or jus use straight Coke/Pop pour on a rag circle motions an it will come off excellent for removing rust an oil anything thats chemical.. I know it sounds crazy but it works...🌿👍👍🌿
Just a few small things that have worked very well for me.
When I’m leaving my camper I take pictures of everything as it is and have small Cameras like nanny cams in places to record any intruders. I also have small solar lights that are motion activated. They keep people away or surprise them walking too close when the RV is by itself and I can see my key locks at night. When I’m inside at night I keep my key fob with me to activate the van alarm if need be. I have had to use it and it worked like a charm. I’m sorry that happened to you and understand how you feel. I hope the rest of your visit is spectacular. ❤🎉🤗
This is a brilliant idea. Loud sound and also outside lights (I guess that could also be activated remote) could be an idea 👍

Those outside keys were also required for Customs, whose officers have to go in and look for pests, and items outlawed for shipping into the EU, and double check that everything on the shipping manifest matches what they are seeing.
I was sorry to see someone attempted to break in via your attic and fan area and I hope you can repair your fan. It is well worth the money to beef up your attic lock system to send a deterrent message to thieves. We did this on our narrow boat. Everything of value stored outside was chained in place with heavy duty chain and big heavy duty locks. It was more work and effort than most thieves cared to expend and they moved on.
My husband also designed and welded in place a means of locking our gas cap so our diesel would not be stolen. If your van does not have a locking gas cap I encourage you to research and fit it with a heavy duty locking cap; now that you've seen the extortionate price of gas and diesel you know why thieves will target an easy to open cap and they will siphon your tank dry. Having a locking door to access the gas tank is not enough. Those are easily jimmied open.
I am so pleased you discovered authentic Belgium fries! Now you know why the British say something is "cheap as chips."
Besides being flattened by two world wars, Belgium has been fought over by the Germans, the French, and the Flemish (Dutch) for centuries with each country claiming ownership at different times. Also the English have fought wars there, the most famous being the battle of Waterloo when The Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon.

Happy you got your van back ok and minimal damage. They probably looked inside and didn’t see anything so decided to give up. Out of sight , out of mind. Glad they couldn’t get in. They may have been trying to avoid cameras too if they have them on the ships. Look forward to seeing your new adventures.
Belgium is the country with most rain days a year in Europe. You eat and drink well there though, much better than in France. They have a rich beer culture, you have to try bolleke bear and eat Waterzooi, a hearty soup/stew, not to forget moules frites.

I was on pins and needles as you drove to the port and I felt such relief with Curt as the puck locks were intact, it is unfortunate that there was some damage after all though. I get that you guys are nervous. It's not just a van, it's your home, and it's just stuff, but the stuff make your house, where you feel at home and safe. So I get that this was a little stressful situation.
Years ago I had to go to an internet cafe in Paris to check in for my flight home ... the keyboard threw me for a loop!!!!
It was crazy! One, I didn't expect it... And two, I can't believe how difficult it became just by moving a few letters around!!
Especially if you have special characters in your password. Belgian and French keyboard layouts are the worst.

Snow and Curt..my husband and I drove from Paris to Amsterdam in 2013 and did a river cruise through The Netherlands , Germany, Austria and Hungary. We also drove through southern France in 2016. We loved it of course.We also cruised around Greece and visited Portugal.Australians have a weird sense of humour. By the end of your time in Europe you will have done what many Australians like us call an ABC tour....."Another Bloody Church/Cathedral/Castle" tour! " I loved them all...my husband not so much !

One one hand glad to see everything showed up mostly intact. On the other hand with how expensive it is, the break in, and the damage are infuriating. Not even my house and I'm thinking WTF? You pay these shippers and agents and basically get no sort of guarantee. Shipping your home is not for the faint of heart!

I guess you will have to tell the van life community to secure their fan port from the inside when shipping or maybe you did, could not really see. So happy no serious damage guys. Enjoy being home. As you were travelling through the streets of Belgium I had a weird sensation in my heart as Holland is where I was born before we immigrated to Canada. I spent a year there when I was 18 and it was like travelling through home when I watched your video. Hugs
Glad to see you are back in your own home. I am hoping you were able to have insurance for the shipping although they really want you to sign all rights away with their waivers. Love the attic area (I had not seen that area before) but glad you didn't have anything stored up there currently.

1. Frits, yum, and they are eaten with Mayonnaise in most places here. 2. Make your way through Southern Spain or Portugal for the winter, lots of open campsites, cheap, pretty, and so many in Spain where you'll have your own bathroom. 3. Humans always have the right in crosswalks, and some are not flat, so hang on if you hit one at a high speed. Have fun! 4.DO NOT LEAVE BELGIUM WITHOUT EATING A CHOCOLATE COVERED CUSTARD FILLED ECLAIR!!

Wow, so glad as others have commented, you have your house back. I like the dummy keys idea. However i would think customs would access looking for drug smuggling. Didn’t they have a key to the attic? Glad you didn’t have any valuables stored up there….whew!

Maybe you should consider driving way south away from the rain if possible and visit when it’s not so crowded and not so hot and go back up north where it’s possibly cooler. So glad you got your home back with not too much damage
That is the plan... but this is where we had to pick up our van!
It’s really weird seeing you in Europe my home territory, if you want warmer winter weather head for about 10 miles inland in Southern Spain, not boiling but about the best you’ll find and less busy, Gibralter is nice too for a taste of U.K. living, park at the aire at Le Linea marina on the Spanish side and walk in over the run way. Benarraba and Ronda are about 30 miles inland. Don’t expect the lovely temperatures here in Florida! The key debate: We have a false habitation key for shipping US to U.K. If there is any damage will accuse the shipping company saying the key was provided so any damage due to them being unable to operate the lock down to them. Other option is a lockbox with authorised only key code. Love seeing Europe through your American eyes.

So glad you got the van and it was in pretty good shape. Wondering about the windshield I thought you had damage before leaving Argentina and you said you replace windshield in Europe. If this is so then the damage to the window with the acid will not be a problem. The paint on the hood maybe you will need to inspect.
