    Once I started using inversions then my playing really took off along with finally understanding Modes. I started playing guitar in about 1988 - 1989. My teacher wasn't really big into learning a lot of theory but he did explain how to build chords to me. Chord Theory is at the top of my list when someone asks me to explain music theory to them. Also knowing what notes in a key are the major/minor chords is important. I think everything else falls under those two things.

    Good stuff man. Chord construction gets cloudy for a lot of people, including myself sometimes still, when it comes to drop tuning. Especially when you add in that 7th string. Really cool to show everyone that there's so much more to drop tuning other than your typical one finger bar style haha. Years back, I printed out a bunch of blank fretboard pages and wrote in all of these chord shapes and studied the sh*t out of them. Standard AND dropped, just because the dropped construction wasn't easily available to find. Really helped. I highly recommend to any player, no matter what level, to learn chord construction and chord theory. Haha, I know guys who've played for 30 years that still don't fully "understand" what they're actually playing half the time. When you can quickly relate to where all your 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, & 7ths are, just in relation to where your roots are, it opens up a whole new world, AND helps tremendously with your lead/solo playing as well. For some reason, there's not a lot of lessons on this type of thing on CZcams for drop tunings, so cool to see someone tackle it. A good video on how to use these chords in relation to song structures would be super popular too. Such as how to actually use Sus, Dim, Aug, Dom, etc chords properly in structuring a song. What they lead into, what sounds good with what, that type of lesson. Not a lot of that stuff available on the metal side of things. Nice work dude 👊

    Your add 9 is actually a sus 2 because you’re not adding to the shell 1 3 5, you are replacing the 3 with a 2. It often gets confused

    • @EDAR96
      @EDAR96 Před 4 lety +5

      Stay Metal Ray if you were playing the 3rd along with the root, fifth, and ninth yes, unless you were and I wasn’t paying attention, it looked like you were only on root fifth and ninth. Either way I’m not trying to play know it all on your videos, you do great work Ray and I could’ve used videos like this when I was starting out

    • @xanderraymondcharles
      @xanderraymondcharles  Před 4 lety +2

      It’s all good man. But an add 9 power chord is 1 5 9

    • @EDAR96
      @EDAR96 Před 4 lety +9

      Stay Metal Ray but the whole point of an add chord is that you’re adding on to either a major or a minor, without the major or minor chord to define the chord, you’re left with a sus2. You must have a triad (135) in order for the 9 to qualify as an add chord. An add9 power chord doesn’t exist

    Really great helper for people trying to learn some new tips or trying to learn how to write metal or songs in general really.. however from a "by the book" point of view, you probably are actually teaching some bad habits and ideas to anyone that is truly a beginner. I'm hoping you take this as a positive criticism, not an insult, but I think there's maybe too much information being squeezed into a short amount of time so you can't fully explain the ideas. The root is such an important concept in terms of chord structure, and it was kind of breezed over. Not all chords are really the same, or to be treated as such just because they have the same notes. Overall though I liked the video! You clearly know what you're talking about, but maybe try being more in depth and take it a little slower. I know everyone wants to learn how to shred right away. But it takes time!

    It’s so metal to talk about music theory on a drop A guitar 😂 Love it, btw, but it’s a bit hard to follow for this metal n00b with all his guitars still in E standard. Best I could do is work from drop D and just only look at the shapes, skip the note names. I bet there’s a lot of metal heads who love that you spoke their language for a change, though!
