I still have Chameleons on heavy rotation. So glad you’re hitting them. Next try “Swamp Thing”, one of my very favorite numbers of all time. I’m back on a gothic dance floor again in my mind.
YESSS!!! JUSTIN you need to do this BAND AND THIS ALBUM!!!! The Chameleons are a great Manchester band. They mixed dreamy guitars with post-punky rhythms and influenced bands like Interpol. Dont Fall is a Killer opener. Here Today, Monkeyland, Second Skin, Less Than Human, Thursdays Child, Paper Tigers and View From a Hill are all classic songs by the band on this album: Script of a bridge. Please do more! PS. Dont Fall is probably the heaviest song on the album.
I bought this album upon the day of its release. It is easily hands down one of the greatest albums/groups of all time. In my 60s now I still listen to this and their other albums as if they were just released over and over again in total bliss.
Highly underrated and highly influential post punk Definitely do the rest of this album, this is a great opener and it gets better as you get deeper into it. | particularly like Monkeyland, Second Skin, and Less than Human.... hell, there are no bad songs on this album
IN the Autumn before the Winter , November 1986, I was at the Berkeley marina with my date, Nancy, listening to the waves and fog horns in the distance, Don't Fall! Music can take you back in time to that time stamp in the past. She made me a tape of 2 Chameleons LPs. Cool! Miss that pretty girl. Nice they have some new fans, thanks. B seeing their show in 2 weeks!
Love that you're listening to The Chameleons -- a seminal British post-punk band to be sure, who should have been much more well-known here in the U.S. than they were. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the big single from this album, Up the Down Escalator... such a great, great song. I hope you keep going with this album!
Welcome to The Chameleons, JP! This is my favourite song of one of my top three bands ever; I can't separate them from The Sound and The Comsat Angels - and if you like this kind of melodic post-punk, you'll like both of those too. Would love to see more of this ilk!
You nailed it, Justin... The Chameleons were on the top-shelf of the post-punk movement... and they were a criminally underrated band who were very influential to a lot of bands (Interpol, for instance). This is one of the flat-out best debut albums ever. There's not a weak song to be found. The twin-guitar attack is so mesmerizing, especially when paired with the driving rhythm section and Mark Burgess' haunting and passionate vocals. The second track on this album, "Here Today" is the chill-inducing story of John Lennon's murder from his point of view. The album also features what many consider to be The Chameleons' best song "Second Skin"... which is brilliant... but they have so many other great songs to challenge that... "Fan And The Bellows," "In Shreds" (Their debut single... and well-worth checking out... they used this blistering song as a closer for many a show.), "Swamp Thing" (A minor hit in the US), "Looking Inwardly," "Tears" (there's two versions, acoustic and electric... both great), and "Up The Down Escalator." Enjoy these amazing songs and thanks for taking a chance on them! Cheers!
I was just listening to this album yesterday and thought you should listen to them. I was hoping you would enjoy it! They're post punk with a good amount of dreaminess. Nothing revolutionary, but still great. I was obsessed with this band for a little while in the early 00s. In 2009, I was fortunate enough to see Mark perform their songs with his band Chameleons Vox and I'm going to see them again this September. I'm glad you're going to listen to the next song regardless of whether that's on camera or off!
Great post punk recommendation. Justin, you have something great in your hands. The Chameleons is strong bass lines, jangling guitars sounds on beautiful melodies with amazing shifts. Almost perfect album as Disintegration by The Cure.
I'm glad u got round to this band b4 me. I'd never get round to them but their melodic energy echoing thru my phone suggests a Band of Great Underground Hype, justified. I may listen on my own incase u don't but either way, win win. U gotta hear Manic Street Preachers' greatest hits Justin. R they the perfect Band? 😀
Do you have a checklist of my favorite artists? Sylvian, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Cocteau Twins, Marillion, only The Chameleons were missing, and here they are! That´s crazy...
Great that you're doing this album. The 'bridge' is that which is part of a guitar. The spoken intro is from the 1946 film 'Two Sisters From Boston'. I can now relate to it!
This is a song about a ‘difficult’ LSD experience, the metaphysical, Jungian symbolism of which is beautiful evidence it confirms what I’ve believed for 25+ years: that psychedelic drugs can be valuable tools for self-discovery.
Please do the whole album JP, and more of them. Up the down escalator is one of my faves from this album but there isn't a bad track really. Other super albums of theirs are, Strange Times, Why call it anything & What does anything mean? Basically. You can easily lose yourself with The Chameleons. Thanks.
This is in my top ten favorite albums of all time. Hope you continue with this one, think you would enjoy it. Second Skin is probably my favorite song on the album...but all the songs are good.
Haha hilarious i just posted on Sneaker Pimps would you steal another favourite, after SP and Talk Talk. The Chameleons are the most underrated post punk band. In order i suggest the following tracks: Up the Down Escalator (a post punk early 80s classic), Monkeyland, A Person isnt Safe Anywhere These Days, Second Skin, As High as you can go. Their second album is good too - What Does Anything Mean? Basically... try Silence, Sea and Sky it's a beautiful track, its on my list at my funeral! No seriously...so start there then P.S. Goodbye, Intrigue in Tangiers, Looking Inwardly, Home is Where the Heart is. And better still get the version with the bonus tracks In Shreds and Nostalgia, which were actually originally issued before Script.
@johanidh6553 it's the problem of writing too much - me that is! That statement about In Shreds is the last sentence. There is a really old compilation album The Fan and The Bellows that had both, and the bonus version of What does anything mean? Has both on as bonus tracks
I knew this album and this band but was never thrilled by their sound or their songs, having always preferred other bands of the genre such as The Opposition, The Comsat Angels and The Sound. From The Opposition I recommend the tracks "Breaking the Silence" and "Black and White" (from their 1981 album Breaking the Silence), from The Comsat Angels the tracks "After the Rain" and "Not a Word" (from their 1982 album Fiction) and from The Sound the tracks "Golden Soldiers" and "Counting the Days" (from their 1984 EP Shock of Daylight).
I don't know why but I have never heard 'The Chameleons' before - I guess I expected ethereal being early 80's! On this song I hear 'Tear Drop Explodes' (in vocals very Julian Cope in delivery and sound) and 'The Cure', 'Killing Joke' musically / sound production - all as I would expect from early 80's and all well and good. I'm not particularly impressed on first hearing of a first song - alright I suppose is my damning with feint praise.
I remember the band, but not their music particularly. And hearing this i'm not surprised... Basic, generic, repetitive, little of note, and what a ropey vocal. * But seeing we're in Manchester (nice segue eh) How about some New Fast Automatic Daffodils. Try Beatlemania for a taster, then the rest of the album it's off, Body Exit Mind. Or the track Big, from their album Pigeonhole, then the rest of that LP. Two top discs.
I have the 7" French promo vinyl of Don't Fall! a VERY RARE vinyl to obtain these day's especially in MINT condition. It hangs proudly on my wall 🧱 C. 27 - 07 - 23
A classic post punk album that has a great moody melodic attitude. Do the whole lp !
A Underrated CLASSIC
A must
One of the most underated bands ever
The Chameleons are one of my favorite bands ever.
Also! I recommend their song Swamp Thing
good people like good songs

Also, “Time”
Can't wait for you to hear Second Skin and View From a hill.
Truly wonderful music

A person isn't safe anywhere these days, Up the down escalator
I’m off to see them on Sunday!

One of my favorite post-punk bands from that era along with Killing Joke .
Highly underrated and highly influential post punk
Definitely do the rest of this album, this is a great opener and it gets better as you get deeper into it.

Echoing so many of the sentiments below - underrated, important band. My favorite tracks include Second Skin and Monkeyland.
"Swamp Thing" has a real cool groove. Like it
I love that song. Also "Up The Down Escalator".
One more thing... One of their two guitarists, Reg Smithies, did all their cover artwork. Great stuff.

The Holy Trinity of unknown Post-Punk bands.
My favorite album as a teenager. I've met Mark Burgess a couple times and he's just a one of the nicest and coolest guys.
Isn't he just.
Used to have a drink (or ten) with him in Middleton many moons ago.
Cool way, Justin !! You'll be seriously blown by this album !! I love it since 1983 !!

Sweet.
Grew up with the Chameleons, as they were our local band in Middleton.
@@paulleach3612 amazing band.
Nice surprise - I had never heard this band. Post-punk and goth rock seem to meet here in a successful way.
Oh yes, what a fantastic song, album and band. Hope you do the whole thing. Absolutely essential post-punk.

Loved this from the first time I heard it. Glad you reached this point in your reactions. BTW is Rollo from Tacoma?
I would call it early Brit-Pop ;-)
Judging by the comments on videos for this song on youtube it has saved a few people from ending their lives.
