Behind Bars - La Mesa, Mexico: • Behind Bars 2: The Wor...
The Carcel Distrital is located in one of the most dangerous quarters of Bogotá. Nearly 950 men and 50 women are imprisoned here. Most are still awaiting their final judgment. Their long wait may last for years: Justice in Colombia works slowly. Very slowly.
This leads to great frustration. Many frustrated people in one place will always lead to great problems.
Disputes, fights and riots are everyday occurrences.
The 170 staff members have their hands full with unannounced raids, inspections of the inmates and fights for power with the prisoners.
The prisoners fight back. They play by their own rules - illegal ones. Even in prison they continue to take drugs, carry weapons and continue their illegal transactions. One is always involved: the boss of the gang! He has people around him to do his jobs, such as acquiring drugs and weapons.
If caught, they will be in trouble; the sanctions are solitary confinement, extension of the sentence or visiting bans.
Support and help from family is important for the inmates. On visiting days, they have two hours to pretend everything is ok, hold their children and their loved ones. After precisely two hours, they have to say farewell, not knowing when they will meet gain.
The bleak life in prison continues with its daily fights.
All inmates share one thing: They want out as quickly as they can, and never return behind bars! But they must fight for that: against the slow course of justice and against their criminal selves.

I always find it fascinating how every single prisoner talks about how they are so upset with not seeing their children, expressing how devastating it is to them that they aren't there to see their daughter learn to crawl, as if it's all the prison's fault for turning them into emotional train wrecks. Maybe they should have thought of that before they became criminals.

I'm from Bogotá, never been on any crime, but I'm lucky, I was able to keep myself away from that life due to my shy personality and having a loving family but when I was in 6th grade I saw hell, kids fighting with knifes, a school that looked like a jail where you had to survive other kids, they stole from me, broke my teeth, went outside of the school just to steal from everyone there.

Claudia is heartbroken because she can't watch her daughters grow. I am shocked that she is even allowed to see her kids since she's in Prison for sex trafficking people. That is a Horrific thing to do to other people's children. Taken them away, many that never get to see their family again. It's so awful how many people secretly, illegally force others to be raped, drugged etc against their will. That's not a snap decision in the heat of the moment. Sex trafficking is a MASSIVE network of people that takes years to build up. Explain that to your beautiful daughter's when they are old enough to find out why your really there. Awful

I don't think they're allowed to go back in their cells after they're let out. It's mandatory they all be outside with everyone.
