  • Behind Bars Season 2 Episode 1: Colony 100 - Ukraine’s prison for hardened criminals | Prison Documentary
Serial killers, child abusers, repeat offenders. All those behind the walls of this Soviet-built prison have already done time in at least three other Ukrainian jails - and learned nothing from that experience. Or they have committed crimes so heinous that they will never again leave their 100-square-foot-cell in the maximum security wing. The prison is marked by an omnipresent hopelessness that seems to go hand in hand with its architectural dreariness.
Alexander knows the procedure by heart. Speak only when spoken to. Hands crossed behind your back. Stop at every white line. And for God’s sake, always look down.
Today he’s getting locked up for the fourth time. This time he committed armed assault. He’s been to jail before for drugs, theft, and stabbing. But this time he hasn’t been sent to some town jail. No, he’s in Colony 100. THE prison for repeat offenders. And Alexander knows that if he hopes to be released again, he must adapt from day one. And not call attention to himself. Either from the guards, or from the other 300 inmates...
Rusha doesn’t ponder such things. He murdered 29 people, and he’ll probably never see the world outside the maximum-security wing again. Instead, each day he tries to find something to occupy himself in his isolated and dismal world. Waiting for an upcoming meeting with a psychologist distract him from reality. Other than his cellmate and the guards, no one has spoken to him in years.

I am impressed at how civilised this is compared to US and some UK prisons, that punishment cells have a limit of 14 days but many US prisoners live in worse conditions for their entire sentence. The quarantine makes sense, the care that is taken with choosing where the prisoner works and lives and the psychological evaluation are years ahead of most prisons. The strict rules being enforced are good, the alternative is the chaos we see in many others. The prisoners can earn 50 euros a month, if you think that’s a poor wage then compare it to USA and bear In mind how low wages are in Ukraine. All in all I am very impressed.

No, the prison conditions in the U.S. are very good compared to other countries - too good in my opinion. For example, they have TVs in their cells, regularly interact with other inmates, have better food, and can get all kinds of food through commissaries. If you want to see truly hard prisons, look at those in Siberia, Russia.

@@amylee3531 Well, if people don't want to live like that then maybe they shouldn't break the law. Also, I know people don't like to talk about it but the more mixed the races are in a prison the more tension and violence inside. That's just a fact. It doesn't mean one race is any better than another. In American prisons, the first thing that happens is people divide each based on their race. The guards don't do that, the prisoners are the ones who want it that way.
