Movie first, every time. When it comes to artwork and packaging, I only care about three things: 1) Can I read the film’s title from the spine when I store it on my shelf? 2) Does the packaging adequately protect the disc and not damage it when I remove it to view? 3) Does the case fit on my shelf? (no irregularly TALL boxed sets!)
If the answer to all three of those questions is YES then I’m a happy camper.

We live in an age where you can download a movie for free in any quality and save it to a drive or burn it into a disc. When I buy physical, I'm not just paying for the movie itself, the customer has too much access for the companies to get away with laziness nowdays. Put worthwhile special features on it, and make it into a cool keepsake.

An EXCELLENT point. Marketing towards collectors should be seen as essential for physical media these days. If they can't release a classic film with its original poster art, at least make the new artwork as enticing as possible. I would pay through the nose to see the original Drew Struzan or Tim Hildebrant artwork used for proper remasters.

It’s actually a really good question. Twister on 4k can be had for $22, yet many are paying $60 and up for the steelbook. Same thing with the departed. Even worse, many paid up to $170 for the Oppenheimer steelbook, just so Walmart could put out their steelbook, and everyone watched their Best Buy collectible plummet in value.

Whenever there is original artwork, that should be an option (reversible cover) or the go-to/standard cover for the release. The boutique labels give us the best of both worlds in which they give us commissioned artwork on the slip or box and reversible artwork on the actual case, so we can switch to the original poster if we WANT TO. They give us options, and I'll forever support those releases.
These movie studios just dump these great transfers into horribly and lazily designed packaging and it really just grinds my gears. We want OPTIONS. Is that really too much to ask for?

The transfer and picture quality is definitely the Most important, but for older films being upgraded, it always bugs me when they change a perfectly good cover. Main stream movies, I don't generally care with exceptions. For horror, though, there's before Scream Factory and post Scream Factory. Before, especially in the dvd era, seemed like no one was using the original poster arts. Then Scream Factory came along with reversable art with the original poster art on one side.
I have no idea if they were the originators or not, but they certainly set the bar. Synapse, Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, Severin, even Kino Lorber all do reversable art with the original art on one side. I stand by my comment in an earlier video. If the boutiques can do it, there's not one reason why the big studios with more funds can't. Not one.
With Elm Street being an anniversary release exacerbated the issue. Fans were pretty vocal. They wanted the original artwork that hasn't been used since that box set you had and even then they were miniturized. They wanted a box set. Warner ignored the fans. What's sad is people know that if Warner had just let Scream Factory do it, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

With that stated, I do value artwork, but if the artwork is terrible and there is no other official release it's not going to stop me from buying the product. I will complain and point out the flaws of terrible artwork, but I will still buy the product and if later the same product has a new release with better artwork I will buy that. I value owning an official release on physical media above all else, the best visual format is second (Example- If there is a 4K and a bluray I'll buy the 4K), third would be the prestige of the release (example- if there is a collector's set or steelbook and the other option is the standard set I'll buy the collector's set), and artwork is fourth, but still very important to me.

I personally value getting films in the best possible quality before artwork packaging. I am a collector who will get a 4K version of a film even if it’s a film that “doesn’t need the 4K treatment”. I’ve never downgraded in transfer quality because of packaging artwork.
With that being said, if a film is getting multiple 4K additions, that is when the artwork begins to matter in my eyes. Sometimes I will buy a 4K steelbook over a slipcover if the artwork is better and vice versa. In rare occasions if I truly love the artwork on both I may double dip but that is extremely rare.
In terms of the actual packagings whether it be steelbook or slipcovers I always look for copies with little to no damage. I am someone who does keep the slipcovers as well as the J cards with the physical release on the shelf so I always want the best condition. If a 4K is missing it’s slipcover I may in the moment change my mind and pick up the Steelbook instead.
Something that could make or break a purchase for me is how the discs are stored. If the discs are forced to be stacked or are only held in cardboard sleeves rather than the tray I typically try to avoid those as those additions are prone to scratching and getting damaged.
So overall to a degree artwork can matter but I personally care more about getting films in the highest quality and packaging that will preserve the discs from damage.

Packaging matters a lot because the US chintzes it's consumer base like a 42nd Street pawnbroker with a broken receipt printer. BUT...the transfer is #1. Packaging is #2 or #3 (depending on if the artwork is part of it or not). What I like is packaging that is durable (hardcases), aesthetically accurate (matches look of the film), and full of reprints of promotional material like posters, lobby cards, or even props from the film (like, the TV Guide from LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, or the Amity Island billboard from JAWS) that are otherwise inaccessible. Posters, cards, blueprints, storyboards, and booklets (ohhhhhhhh how I love me a goddamn booklet, or a reprint of the script with deleted scenes in it).
I don't like "swag"--packaging that's all overpriced goofy shit like Shout! Factory's deluxe boxed sets with stickers, pins, etc.--and I don't like bust kits--boxed sets shaped like figurines and statue heads ( _The Walking Dead_ or a xenomorph head set of the Alien Quadrilogy). That's collector-baiting and it makes shelving a real difficulty.

Isn't the "original original" A Nightmare On Elm Street theatrical poster the one with Nancy in bed with the blades from Freddy's glove spread out over her head and a very distorted and decayed version of Freddy's face in the background? I was a kid at the time and remember seeing low-fidelity black-and-white versions of that poster in the "Now Playing" ads in the Montreal Gazette newspaper and, since I didn't yet know that the villain in the movie was Freddy Krueger, I assumed it was a movie about a girl dreaming about being attacked by some kind of giant metallic robot spider (as I couldn't really tell that they were blades attached to a glove instead of metal spider legs).

IF a movie features artwork I don't like but is the only version available on the latest format, I'll still pick up a copy. But good god, I would happily pay double or even triple to see the original poster art used for new steelbook or special-packaging releases. For example, I would PROUDLY display a 4K restoration of The Secret of NIMH if it featured the Tim Hildebrant poster art (along with some of the other posters as interiors?), or the Drew Struzan art for any given Muppet film.
I almost always prefer for the original poster art to be used - especially when it's Drew Struzan or similarly styled art. But if a release features new art that I find particularly enticing (or, for certain horror/mystery films, appropriately minimalist or eerie), I'm more than happy to support the release. I LOVE the artwork on Arrow's upcoming "When Titans Ruled the Earth" set, as well as the slipcover for The Ring 4k with its very simple design of just that image of the "Ring" from the tape.

The artwork matters, but for the most part it doesn't affect my purchasing decision. About the only time it does is if I'm on the fence about buying a title to start with. If I like the movie, but I don't know if I like it enough to want to own it for repeat viewing. If it has cool art or packaging, that will be enough to push it into the buy category for me. The Young Guns steelbook comes to mind. On the other hand, bad packaging doesn't affect my decision at all if I like the movie. I own about nine of those ugly ass Disney 100 silver steelbooks. 😂

I don’t overly care about what artwork is used and I don’t have any interest in special features and usually never watch them. Thsi is what I want. A Jewelcase CD, so the booklet can be in hand, and you can replaced a broken holding center-pin thingy that holds the CD. For vinyl : gatefold sleeves with an insert. Too many releases have 2 LP in a slip-sleeve, no insert, no lyrics, just white plain sleeves and NO download code. Make a LP worth the purchase price. Give a download + an insert and printed inner sleeve if possible, inside a gatefold. For videogames put a cartridge or CD inside. NO empty plastic cases with a download code. And if you are gamestop, you better let me go home with the cardboard piece with the download code of my game. I am buying that cardboard with the printed game image on it... last time I turned back without a purchase cuz Gamestop said they would keep the HADES cardboard serial number if i bought it. I told them what i thought of this scammy business practice and left.

@@chrisjfox8715 It’s finding the right thickness of cardstock/paper that would be right for your printer. I’ve watched videos to try to get an idea from others who’d made their own. You also gotta decide whether or not you want the paper to be glossy/semi-gloss/matte. Most importantly the black ink in the printer must be Dye Ink, not pigment. If it’s pigment, the ink won’t soak into the paper and will smear everywhere. I’ve already attempted a test one and that was my outcome.
