    Happy to be part of this movement. Been listening to albums on CD from start to finish every morning and it's a different world from listening to music while doing ten other things and bouncing from track to track across various artists. Plus I know the music was created by actual human beings and is not AI generated.

      I don't miss VHS or vinyl. DVDs were always superior and the last time I watched a tape of ET (1982) it just reminded me of how superior my Blu-ray is. Same goes for vinyl. I don't miss all the ticks and pops then not being able to listen to them in the car unlike a CD or an iTunes file.

    I love physical media. My wife and I put off streaming services for YEARS and we never had cable. So we ended up with a ton of dvds that we never got rid of luckily. Once we had our kiddo, we bought a box of 100 Disney (and similar) VHS tapes for something like $20. I started buying vinyl records of the albums that mean a lot to me and I use film for family pictures and trips in a photo album. It will be nice to pass all this along to our kiddo rather than everything getting lost when a phone breaks. Plus who knows how long streaming services will last.

    Way back when the dvd came out there were all these magazine and newspaper articles telling you that the life span of a VHS tape was only 8 years so you need to just throw them out and get the space saving and far superior DVD along with the player. I never could get rid of mine. I loved them so much especially when they were being left at thrift shops and resold for practically nothing. I now have too many to count all in shelves in the garage. They did not deteriorate save a few that got white mold probably from poor storage by a previous owner. I have a special room equipped with an older smaller flat screen that allows me to hook up my VHS player. It is my happy place.

    As a person who actively collects VHS, laserdisc and DVDs my only complaint about VHS is that you end up watching most movies in “pan and scan” format. In this regard i think DVD is far superior due to the movies being presented in their proper widescreen format, but VHS tapes are still fun as hell to collect and watch

    I never got into streaming; I always preferred physical media and ended up having that vindicated by the way these corporations splintered up the streaming, edited their products on the sly, or even just straight-up pulled stuff off the platform. My copies of Dumbo or Peter Pan doesn't have some "content warning" on it.
    Recently I got a converter so my VCR will work again. I've hooked up my DVD player near my computer so I can listen to my movies and shows. I've gotten a music player that plays everything from records to tapes to CDs. And yes, I've pirated shows that never got a proper release, not even on streaming. Some people might mock those of us who prefer cultivating these collections, but my collection is tailored to me, not them, and it's not dependent on a constant internet connection either.

    I don't understand people who don't own and have no interest in owning CDs. I've always hated listening to music on the radio because they choose the music, not the listener. And I have no interest in hearing "More than a Feeling" for the 1000th time or whatever Foreigner tune they pull out of their bin. I am constantly scouring thrift stores for CDs. $2. Give it a try. Brazilian music, Chinese classical music, some bizarre band that nobody's ever heard of. Choose an album based solely on the cover. But have Sirius XM choose the next song? Pay money to a streaming service so that I can hear the same music I've already got on CD? I will admit, however, that having a streaming service to watch some TV show or some movie that I'm never going to watch again is convenient. I liked watching "Bosch" and "Flying Circus" on Amazon or whatever because I just can't see owning the DVD. Shows and music aren't like music. There's only so many times I can watch something. Black Sabbath or Miles Davis is forever.

    I've started to build up a collection and I am absolutely all for it. There are so many films that have taken me years to get to because of the abundance of choice i got with Netflix. I now watch films with intention more than i have before in the last 10-12 years and I love it.
    I can't really afford to buy physical movies so my current situation is video files but even so, they're still so much higher quality than Netflix has been. I've built up a collection of sci fi and horror movies that I've been wanting to watch for years and have finally gotten to them because my choices are now limited. I've wasted a lot of time just scrolling through netflix for 20-30 minutes before giving up and watching a youtube video, completely missing out on what I wanted to do, which was enjoy a movie.
    I have downloaded and watched so many classic movies that I was missing out on in the last 2 weeks, stuff like Scream, The Crow and Friday the 13th, things i should have watched a long time ago.

Digged the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack (Which as a Trekkie, well, the likelihood was quite high that I would, yeah.), and now I found them all for dirt cheap on VHS at a sale and watch them on an ancient round screen TV. (Well, maybe. I think the first one will be my favourite, have not even seen the others. Though the fun thing about the franchise is they are kind of all standalone) Life is good.

    The dream of the internet and streaming was the preservation and availability of everything everywhere but instead the mechanisms that inform what is available on streaming services has ruined them. Corporations / publishers using their "content" as bargaining chips in a ratrace to sell license packages to the highest bidder which only results in a terribly unpredictable supply for the consumer when the entire point of the model was ease of use and freedom of choice. So much old stuff isn't offered either, or they do offer them but it's some inferior version of the thing you want, or they only offer it partially. It's honestly horrific considering how much cultural momentum has been sucked out of the television and cinema industries, trying to watch certain old shows on streaming services is very hard to do and it almost feels like a deliberate move to obfuscate how crap some of the new stuff is by trying to hide the old stuff as best as possible. The absolute best way to get what you want it to just buy it physically.

      In the olden days when streaming services had just started it was incredible to have so few services and so many shows and then it just devolved into chaos and it’s really unfortunate. I can't believe this isn't a joke or an RLM sketch. You sound like the old hipsters who used to swear that vinyl was the best way to listen to music, that the cracks and pops made it sound more authentic, the way it was meant to be heard, and all the technical hassles were worth it. You're got this adopted nostalgia for a time you missed out on and it's sad, you need to find ways to appreciate your own time. As for media, physical is sometimes worth it but only for special features and commentaries, anything else is so much better stored digitally. You didn't grow up with VHS so you didn't get to use its main function, making your own tapes from free sources or movie channels. That habit extended to some who would also make their own copies of tapes they rented, and then that would translate into the era f ripping dvd's. Sadly, no one thought to preserve all the features and extra people worked so hard to collect before disc rot claimed them, streaming services just have the title itself and you're lucky is the subtitles work correctly. Yes, collect and curate your own collection, but drop this silly love of the boxes and plastic cases and magnetic tape, all that is doomed to die out. Try to preserve value in your own collection, not monetary, but cultural and entertainment value, and for that the dvd era is your golden age. If you're going to be a physical collector, at least make plans to back it up digitally, trust me, you'll be glad you did later on. Dedication of any kind to VHS for any purpose other than making content or turning it into digital is pure vanity.

      I get what you’re saying, but especially for old movies/music, they were made with the hardware of its time in mind.
      A “worse” experience might very well be more enjoyable in some cases.
      As a personal anecdote, recently i watched Phantom Menace on 4k Bluray and was disappointed that i thought the CGI looked realistic 25 years ago. “How could i have been fooled like this, it looks terrible!”
      Then i tried watching it on DVD on an old CRT, and it look much better despite the lower resolution (and zoomed in image). The CGI actually looked credible again, because it was meant to be seen on this older lower fidelity hardware. Not on a 55” 4K living room display , it doesn’t hold up to that level of scrutiny and the experience is worse for it

      You can go backwards with your streaming nonsense, low nitrate trash while us with physical discs have the highest quality and it's ours, not in the possession of these companies that remove it at any cost due to rights issues etc. I've had multiple people asking me do I have such an such on disc and 9 out of 10 times i lend it out as no streaming site has it unless you pay to rent the title say off Amazon.

      @@carck6442 This is especially true for anything sci-fi or basically anything that used a lot of special effects. I watched A New Hope on Disney+ a few months back and it's just not the same as watching the DVDs. Even on a modern TV, the slight blurriness of the DVD bothers me much less than the pixel perfect smoothness of 4k. 4k makes me uncomfortable anyway, I don't entirely know why but i find that extreme amount of detail unnerving.

    I dont understand this video. Its like you made this just to persuade yourself.
    Why are you buying VHS? its such low quality that they dont even make them anymore. Stranger things and Jaws are still bluray but in VHS packaging for reteo style.
    How is you listening to the same songs the fault of spotify? you have access to millions of songs.
    Not able to find a movie to watch is a you problem. People nowadays have low attention span and cant try new things. You have more ease of access to movies than any generation before. And yet people are conplaining about this? Place a movie lover from the 80s or 90s to today and theyd be absolutely ecstatic from the cenveience of watching movies.
    I see these kinds of videos all the time. Not only being pro physical media but somehow regressing to VHS. They dont even make VHS players anynore. Ridiculous.
    Also, cant afford to stream? Seriously?

      I love my VHS collection. I still have the same VCR I got when I turned 8 (over 25 years ago). I really think it's just a preference. I still have cassette tapes and my cassette walkman. I put music from my CD collections on my mp3 player and make my own mixed tapes. It's actually quite fun.

      I agree. A few years ago before my parents sold their house, I slept in the basement on the futon to babysit my sister's dog. I got bored and decided to put a tape of E.T. (1982) on that I found in a moving box. It was laughable how bad the quality was even on a small 27-inch CRT TV. It was one of those VHS/DVD combos. It just reminded me of how superior my Blu-ray copy is. I don't miss VHS, same as how I don't miss vinyl. I sure as hell don't miss having to rewind them all after watching. DVD/BD/4K are superior and same goes for CDs and iTunes downloads.

    As someone who spent most of my life in the pre-streaming days, I find you guys absolutely hilarious.
    $16/mo. for Spotify = access to most recordings ever made
    $16/mo. for new physical media = maybe one new CD per month (if you're lucky)
    What a deal!
    And VHS, seriously? It was a trash format when it was new, and it looks terrible on a non-CRT monitor.
    It's funny how none of us who lived through this era have almost no nostalgia for it, while you guys do? Your problem is not the format and convenience, it's managing your expectations that matters.

      The whole point is that overconsumption creates diminishing returns, sure I can listen to anything on Spotify but it becomes mindless. As for VHS I lived through it to see the creation of the DVD and it’s just something nostalgic that people find fun, it’s not about getting the best picture quality that’s what 4K is for which is why I use both. At the end of the day if you’re not hurting anyone who cares?

    • @lastguyminn2324
      @lastguyminn2324 Před měsícem +1

      @TheSkylarDolan
      My point is that overconsumption is a choice, and making considered choices from a vast library of options does not diminish that experience. Growing up, I was so frustrated that there was so much music out there that was out of my reach because I couldn't afford to buy everything I wanted. While scarcity did make me cherish what I had all the more, I would NEVER want to return to that era when you would only be able to experience some music if you happened by chance to catch it on the radio or MTV. For a real music afficionado, it really sucked compared to today.
      Now I listen to pretty much everything from streaming services (and I have literally thousands of CDs and LPs collecting dust). But I don't listen indiscriminately to whatever some algorithm thinks I like. I curate my own playlists and mostly listen to what I've chosen myself...I just have a much bigger library to choose from than ever before...and I'm no longer stuck listening only at home or to whatever cassettes/discs I have floating around the car. The flexibility, price, quality, and choice are the greatest thing that have ever happened for listeners of recorded music. I don't even miss the liner notes, as all of that information and much, much more is available at my fingertips on the same device as my music plays on!
