This is my first pair of socks and this is where I was stuck because I could not see exactly what or why I was forming this heel, gusset, etc.

    thank you for clear instructions ... i have just started knitting a sock - well a baby sock. i took a class last week on the heel flap gusset and ending the toe in kitchener. started on my own this afternoon and have taken the heel flap back three times because the pattern wasn't written properly. you don't have a set up row - you just start with the Sl,K repeat across the first row then Sl1 and Purl the next row. I was getting totally confused with how the teacher wrote her initial pattern then gave me a corrected pattern and that wasn't right neither. I'm going to keep at it because I've wanted to try socks for ages. once again thank you for your clear instructions.

    @dorsha2012 Oh, no - don't be upset! We'll figure this out! You're following the pattern so your count should be correct. One thing I can think that you might be doing is counting one right-side row PLUS one wrong side row as ONE. That is actually two rows. The other thing that might be off is your gauge. Does your cuff look especially large, or about the same size I demonstrate in the video? If it's large, you may need to go down a needle size or two to get it right.

    @verypinkknits  Před 13 lety

    @Patchables You're doing something that is very common when some people use double-pointed needles - you're knitting "inside out". It's tough to explain in text how to change what you're doing (I'll need to shoot a video), but for now, just flip your sock right-side out and keep going. Pay close attention so that you don't accidentally start knitting on the purl side.

    Hello,, I've just watched this for the first time (rewound and re-watched several times to verify what you did) and am a tad confused. You stated the first stitch on the heel flap should be slipped as a "knit" stitch, yet you slip it as a purl? Is this to say it will show as a slipped knit on the right side of the work and a purl on the wrong side? If you could please clarify. Thank you kindly, Gertie

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  Před 2 lety

    I just learned today that the heel flap pattern Eye of Partridge is a 4 row repeat that gives almost a seed stitch effect, and that what you are describing (the 2 row repeat) does not appear to have an official name but I have seen it called the heel flap stitch. The lesson is superior no matter what but for accuracy's sake I thought it might be worth making this comment. (Maybe we could christen the 2 row repeat stitch the "bird of paradise" ;-))

    When I knitted the heel flap - somehow I thought I was on a different row (purl, knit,slip) and ended up with a version of the two - the outside of the heel flap has the eye of partrich, then the purl pattern, yikes! glad I wrote down which one I was working on..... so I wouldnt get messed up. :/ I would never get the stitches picked up right, I really cant see the indiv. stitches that well to slide another needle in. the yarn is a wool blend and it is dark blue. any words of wisdom?

      Melissa - you can always pin a clippie marker or safety pin to the right side of the work to keep you from getting confused. Also, a dark colored yarn can make it difficult to see where the stitches are to be picked up. When I need to pick up stitches from dark colored yarn, I always wait and sit close to a window in the daylight, because I know it will be difficult by lamplight!

    I think you made a mistake on 3:26 when you said slip as if to knit. I think you meant to say slip as if to pearl. Your stich you demonstrated looked as if you pearled.

    Have you tried just knitting every row on heel flap for a denser fabric?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  Před 7 lety +1

      You could do that, but garter stitch would not be as comfortable against the skin.

    You say "Slip the first stitch as if to knit" but you slip it as if to purl" In the pattern you don't say. Since you do the rest as "slip to purl I'm going with "purl."
