I saw Vacation in the theater with my family in 1983. I thought it was hilarious but my Dad was in tears he was laughing so hard. At age nine I didn't realize exactly why it was so funny to him. He had just found a movie that made him feel "represented " to use today's terminology.

As a kid in the late 70s and early 80s. This movie captured the cross country road trip perfectly. There was always a disaster right around the corner. Bored out of your mind for hours traveling across Kansas\Nebraska\Iowa. And the cars back then were such crap they rarely made the trip without at least one repair. Air travel was so expensive it required driving for most of us. Kids always wanted to fly, parents couldnt afford it. Always had to travel hundreds of miles out of the way to visit some cousin you would never see again. By the 3rd day parents hate each other from the stress Ect ect. John Huges was a genius when it came to these movies. He really captured Americana of the time period.

Just like preservatives push our food beyond its natural expiration, Clark gets his family on a Wally World ride even though the park is closed. His vacation will not spoil; he will preserve it. The Screaming Meenie was actually Colossus which opened as one of the largest wooden coasters in the world. Colossus has since been remodeled as Twisted Colossus. It used to have two separate tracks but now it has one continuous track. I got to ride Revolution in ‘91 it was a fun ride and at that time still had only the lap restraints. It was very surreal riding a ride I had seen many times in Rollercoaster and Vacation before ever getting to actually visit. I rode again in 2001, but they had installed over the shoulder restraints. Ramis and Chase wrote and appeared in many National Lampoon Radio Hour skits. Ramis went on to jumpstart SCTV and was the head writer for its first season, where he appeared in many skits as well. Incidentally, along with Candy, who worked with Ramis on SCTV, Eugene Levy, another SCTV alumni, was in the film as the car salesman in the beginning. Davenport!
Also, I think Modern Problems was a great Chase movie, which also starred the great Brian Doyle Murray, another Lampoon Radio Hour, SCTV and SNL alumni. Murray is also in Vacation as well as Christmas Vacation.

The closest situation to a "Vacation" moment happened in the early 1980s. My aunt and uncle and other relatives went to Disney Land. We were living in Law Vegas at the time so it was a 4 hour drive. No problems on the way there or at the theme park. However, on the way back we had car trouble. We managed to stop in this town, more of a test stop it was so small if you blinked you'd miss it. Anyway at the gas station (garage) some guys offered to fix the van but wanted an outrageous amount of money. So my uncle called his brother and he drove down to two is back. A short time after we were back on the road the cops pulled us over.
The guys at the gas station has called them and said we were smuggling drugs. Fortunately the whole thing was quickly resolved.

This movie came out right before my family took my favorite vacation of all time to Eureka Springs, AR. It was my parents, my brother, my grandmother, and me. We called it an adventure, because nothing quite worked out as planned, yet we had the time of our lives! And my grandmother was way more fun than the old aunt in the movie. My dad even asked the girl at the McDonald’s drive thru how to get to Wally World. To this day, I keep the marionette my dad slipped me the money to buy (despite my mother saying no and that it costs too much) in my room. This movie makes me happy, because I remember that trip we took in a crowded car. I remember the old dinosaur park we found, and how we begged our parents to take us, which they eventually turned the car around and did. This movie brings back a lot of good memories.

As usual, a great video from Minty. No doubt NL's "Family Truckster" contributed in some small way to consigning the iconic "Brady Mobile" into history's junkyard; however, the demise in the States of the immensely popular station wagon was primarily the result of changes in Federal fuel efficiency requirements by vehicle class. the changes made the design untenable and ultimately gave rise to the SUV class of vehicle.

Best movie ever, and I also like the newer one with Ed Helms. And I also just watched, again, Caddy Shack. Great stuff!

I have lived National Lampoons Vacation...twice. I've been on two cross country trips where I came back in a different car. My 2014 trip to Yellowstone and beyond left me stranded in Salmon, Idaho for 6 days while my insurance company decided whether the car was totalled or not. Salmon is a really nice town to be stuck in btw.

Here's is 11th bit of trivia about the movie that wasn't mentioned: the man at the campsite selling tents is Brian-Doyle Murray (perhaps better known as the mayor from Groundhog Day) and the police officer with the line "Do you know what the penalty for animal cruelty in the state?" also plays a police officer in another funny slapstick comedy starring ANOTHER member of the Bill Murray family, John Murray: Moving Violations.
