The way the city is changing there will he so many lost stories, people like you keep the memories alive
Pal I loved this episode! Please go back for more wee stories 😁
Nice wee joke about the urn! I'm really enjoying your videos--thank you.
The story of the Southern Necropolis is in itself quite astonishing- maybe worth an episode? Also a shout out to The Friends of Southern Necropolis group who dona great job in keeping the place from ruin.
When my granny was a young woman, Sir Thomas Lipton moored his yacht off Gourock. My granny borrowed a rowing boat and charged folk money to go out and round the yacht for a closer look. On her third trip or so, Sir TL asked what she was doing so she called back what she was up to. He shouted back to her - congratulating her on her entrepreneurial endeavour 😂.
Bert Hardy photograph at 11:19, of kids playing in the graveyard, from the Picture Post magazine, Jan 1948. Interesting story regards the White Lady.
Informative.
hari
Allan Glen buried here also. Our Geography teacher Mr McSkimming spent some time trying to find his grave back in the 80s - I recall a trip in the school mini-bus!
Ah, a beautiful Sunday afternoon and I'm greeted by our Resident Historian. Is there a better way to enjoy a lazy afternoon? Thank you Sir.
I have an American colleague who LOVES Lipton tea. I’ll be telling her these facts tomorrow - I had no idea Lipton was a Glasgow boy. The first shop is also spitting distance from our office 😊
I went to John Bosco Secondary and the art rooms overlooked this cemetary - we used to get set assignments to paint it. It's suffered a lot of deterioration since then :/ but it's been nice to see it. :)
Coming from Rutherglen, I pass this amazing place most days, completely oblivious to the people and stories held within. From castle greyskull’s very own Charles Wilson to Alexander “Greek” Thomson’s granite armchair 🫤. It would be well worth a visit
I love how you visited in February & there is so many snowdrops flowering xx
Glasgow never fails to astonish. Thanks for this Dave, so much history and so many stories in just one small place.
Castle grey skull 🤣🤣
And regarding Tea. Circa 1965, there was a kind old woman named Rose McGinty-Ward from Glasgow who introduced me to tea. Every time I would see her we wound enjoy a cup and a nicely buttered English muffin. Well you can call this nice lady Rose or Mrs Ward, I prefer to call her Grand Mom.
As an ex Glaswegian I love these videos and appreciate the occasional humour. Keep up the good work and cheers from Melbourne.
These vids are great 👍
Another nice video Dave 👍
Excellent as ever. My husband's family are buried here, but I've never got around to visiting.
Here in Bangkok Lipton's is still the most popular black tea brand.
Great video, very interesting, thanks
Great stuff,as usual bro. Fantastic back stories you find.👍 My first hoose was in oatlands, five mins from there, but I never went into the necropolis, regrettably (I pumped a burd that lived in they new hooses)
09:53 Frank Lloyd Wright has another link with Glasgow - the Steelcase museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When we were given an after-hours tour by my sister-in-law, c.1984, the floors showcased some remarkable side-by-side furniture (domestic and commercial) comparisons with FLR and CRM (all CRM originals - probably better than Kelvingrove!). We also got a tour of the Meyer May House again in Grand Rapids, owned and curated by Steelcase. Several years later, I visited Hill House in Helensburgh with a friend - different exterior, but a stunningly remarkable and deja vu resemblance on the inside. From that point on, I believed in Jung's theory of synchronicity! Unforgettable - and slightly weird experience - having visited the two. PS - I passed by the former Glasgow office (c.2007) of Steelcase today, approx 79 St Vincent Street.
Loved it , thank you. 👍
Very interesting. Would definitely like more of these stories. Very informative. You do your research well.🎉 Lipton tea is very popular and is in nearly every restaurant in NY but it isn’t my favorite although now I know the history, I might revisit my tea taste..lol😊
Loved it. Another great video . Cheers.
ah yes ending it with a classic, top man! i stay on langside road , didnt know those closes where a church at some point in time, didnt even know that it was burnt s from the spark of a german bomb, i was brought up in the east end and i call myself lucky to have learner these facts today, keep up the good work
Thanks Dave, it was again a really detailed and fascinating episode. Looking forward to the next one!
More please
Wow Dave, its a long time since I have had white chocolate sculls 🙂lol. Another great episode, and even although I am originally a Paisley Buddy, I spent a lot of my younger years working in Glasgow, so love following your channel. Thanks
My Mum's family are from Johnston (you may remember Jaconelli's ice cream vans?) so I spent a lot of time in Johnstone, Paisley and Linwood when I was growing up.
@@AstonishingGlasgow Wow that's amazing Dave, and as they say its a small world. Yes Jaconelli's Ice Cream was like my second home every time they came round. I can almost taste their ice cream now.
I may be bias but my Grandpa's ice cream was the best in the world.
@@AstonishingGlasgow Well I will be Biased too, but then I was brought up with it 😂😂 and if I am honest, have never had any ice cream like it since. Love that we have made this connection Dave. Thanks for cheering up this golden oldie.
Thanks
Thanks!
Not enough vampires have iron teeth, I'm thinking. The hi-rise flats resemble larger versions of the memorials. I worked for Lipton's for a while, but it was contracting so I took a payoff and headed away to college.
One thing I didn't mention in the video was the tower blocks are now empty and boarded up awaiting demolition.
Thanks
