I love the fact that you dont have podcast mics right up on the face.
I know they are great but irks me when videos have the screen is filled with a mic lol.
Just did this with a podcast yesterday and it felt mych more relaxed.
Also, nice mug... i mean the one holding the coffee lol

I utterly know what you mean however, sadly, we had to go to the podcast mic route as of late due to editing work flow (a typical episode of Coffee and Cameras takes me about 15-20 hours to edit and post). With the video here we had two boom mics above us and it was working well for sound, however the moment we tried to isolate the sound per host we lost control of the quality. We always run the audio through Audition to clean it up and it would pick up the other person's audio and boost it and attempt to "clean" it (meaning heavily distort and garble it (thus adding about 2-3 more days of editing per episode). But I 100% agree with you about the mics in the faces, if we didn't have the post work flow issue I would go back to the boom mics in a heart beat.
_ Edit - 3 mics (I forgot about the dual-person mic for safety) - you can see the safety mic in the 2-person shot.

@@NightOwlsMedia Totally get it, I just done a podcast using two mics and it worked well, I've been trying to avoid using podcast mics but I suspect I will end up having to go that route simply down to isolation. I just like a clean setup and it's the one thing that gripes me, but not enough to warrant it out. Just being stubborn lol.
One of the reasons that I was going to use the booms was down to the fact that I have a concept for an informal podcast show called "BBC" Business, Beer & Chats lol, don't worry the play on the acronym was very deliberate. I have people lined up that I network with to do it but I just wanted it to be 4 or more business owners getting together, talking business, general chat and having a beer.
It was the audio that I was most concerned with because I didn't want to have the podcast mics. So I was thinking about doing it around a round table with 4 booms but in XY pattern so they each face a person. Gonna have a think about it.

@@DatrysiadMedia First and foremost, omg I love the BBC name. It's a fun play especially because of your location. If I were to do that, it's super would not be as cool. Lol. Maybe we could do WWF, What Wonders (we) Find... Nah. Ahhh, America. I think unless you are really wanting to do a lot of editing, a round table with four boom mics Will be a tad bit annoying in post.
So before we switched to the podcast mics, We actually did a bit of research first. I was very much in the same camp as you, as I wanted it to look better, more classy, and less like everybody else. But what we found was, especially as video production people, we tend to get in our own way of what works. We watched the top 20 video podcast shows around the world concerning their subscribers and views, and then we interviewed about 40 people, business owners and other people who are not in video production but rather the people we were trying to target, and we looked at who was using podcast mics versus boom / lavs, and ask the questions did the podcast mics bother anybody. We got a universal, "I didn't even notice the microphones" from our interviewed people, and of the top 20 shows, I believe it was 18 or 19 were all using the podcast microphones.
So that slapped me in my face and told me that I was worrying about something that our viewers didn't even notice or care about. Because at the end of the day our goal with these shows is to provide value above everything else. Whether that's education or entertainment, we just want to make sure people enjoy and get something from it.
Damn dude, this should be its own video....

@@NightOwlsMediaThank you for the sage advice, i'm quite pragmatic in the end, lol once I gotten out of my own way. Sometimes I'm my own worse enemy. I always have lavs as a backup, but found trying to avoid phasing and isolation, was a bloody nightmare.
Lol see got your creative juices flowing, you should def do a video on it, because it has value for me as a video production business, but also gives other viewers the confidence to know why you have picked the gear you have, what purpose it is serving and what the general consensus of participants was.
I will let you know what I end up doing, right now I don't have any podcast mics, was going to look at the rode podcaster as an entry - midway level just to get this started.
Thanks for helping, and if I can return the favor in anyway, always feel free to reach out.

@@DatrysiadMedia THE PHASING! I soooo agree with that about the lav mics. I do a movie review channel with my wife and we don't focus on keeping the quality up as we just enjoy talking, but the phasing.... kills me inside.
One of my BIG goals on 2024 is to go through my gear and make videos with my thoughts on why I bought it and why I like using it. I tend to look those videos up myself so I thought people might dig it, hopefully, lol
POdcast mics, I really like SHURE MV7 and a more affordable version is Samson Q9x - amzn.to/3vyYa1p - Which honestly, at least to me, sounds the same as the SHURE but at a lower price.
