You are wrong about the Maverick. It was very popular and out sold the Mustang. In fact Ford tried to cancel the Maverick because of this issue but was unable to due to sales until 1977.
Which explains so much about it. I once was called by a friend to rescue her from a botched attempt to replace the water pump. You had to remove EVERYTHING starting at the front bumper and working all the way back to the engine block . Then remove the first casting of the block that held the pump. About a 12 hour job with hand tools vs 15 minutes for pretty much any other car of the time. All of AMC's cars were mechanical nightmares for what should be simple repairs.
Only good thing about malaise era American cars. They were very easy to hot rod, “upgrade” engine and other drivetrain stuff. Chuck out wheezy 267 v8 that had 115hp to 350 or bigger V8 with 300+ hp engine. Was very cheap install and took a day or 2 to do. Gas mileage didn’t suffer that much.

Sarcastically workers would quip something like "Put the bumper in the back seat. It's a dealer issue." or "At 45 mph no one will notice that. If it's a dark and rainy night." Way before my time workers would say "The Japanese are nipping at our heels over quality." That even found its way to the bargaining tables. We had some bad apples but most of the UAW members actually cared about quality for the sake of pride and employment. So did management but they could get lost in the weeds dealing with numbers, both units outdadoh and dollars. American cars are competitive again and have been for years but there is a collective memory of the days it wasn't so and people hang on to that. -Retired UAW.

You forgot to mention the Pacer's oversized passenger door which was touted by AMC as "super useful for long / wide loads and passengers. The passenger door was 4" longer than the driver's side door and I believe it was a bit taller as well, but I could be wrong about the height difference.

One thing you have to remember anything built after 72 was seriously detuned because of emissions standards. Most engines had the compression reduced and engine timing retarded. This caused sluggish performance and didn't help the fuel mileage either. No dought Detroit made some junk in the 70s and 80s

Older American here. I believe the pronunciation of the Plymouth Volare was Vo lar a, like the song. We used to call the Chevrolet "Chevette" the Shove it. They were an awful little car.

My first car was a 1970 Chevrolet BelAir sedan. I bought it new with my savings from the military. It was pretty plain but it was pretty reliable for the time I had it (11 years and 99000 miles) . It was a 350 V8 and had Powerglide transmission. At first it didn’t have any power steering but after I had it for a while I had the dealership install a power steering system! 🥵 I later found out that it was just a continuation of the Chevys from the 1960s. Chevy completely replaced the full size models in 1971!

I've had Fords that did this too. Yes no mechanic could figure it out. Normally this means you need a tune up but that wasn't the case.
