Throughout the whole series it blew my mind how narcissistic Anna was and I think it would be interesting to see if her mental health diagnosis goes beyond that

Really interesting character. It seems like trying to "get to the bottom" of someone like that and why they do what they do could be pretty much an endless rabbit hole that eventually goes nowhere. It's like at every turn she leaves new breadcrumbs but none of them ever lead anywhere but to a dead end.
Even at the end when she seemed to be feeling something but then put the walls back up...was that even real? We know she can mimic emotional responses very well and needs to keep drawing people in.
At the end of the day maybe someone like that really doesn't have a "bottom" to get to. There's nothing there but the surfaces, and trying to get to anything "deeper" is a fool's errand and just ends up with you sucked into their game (like Dr Carthy noted in the The Silence of the Lambs video). They're basically the human equivalent of black holes.

I loved this TV series! The acting was superb by Julia Garner. Thank you for this reaction video 🙂
When Anna's bluster and walls were brought down a little during her psych evaluation a few glimpses of how she was feeling and thinking emerged... but Anna uses manipulative techniques to get what she wants all the time, so her vulnerability was perhaps also a tall tale to get what she wants...

Her story reminds me too much of Billy McFarland and the Fyre festival. Both had visions, both swindled friends, investors and communities yet certain people were crazy loyal to them due to their potential.
With Anna the loyalty from her peers seemed more fierce yet less understanding. With McFarland he wanted to be surrounded by yes men and positive vibes, no one could questions him. But you could see in the interviews with those who believed in him, they sounded just like Anna's click..

I'm not a doctor nor a psychologist by any means but there's something you need to know about Slavs to understand Ana's father a little bit better. We are very proud and our lives are driven by honour. Our honour, our family's honour. A bit old fashion, but I can see his point. I'm by no means saying he's right, tho but I kind of understand his motives from my Slavic perspective. He's a proud father who's expectations weren't met by his daughter. She disrespected him and that's why he cut her off? Any thoughts?

Hi, I'm new to the channel so now I'm going to do the annoying thing of dropping a few shows for your consideration 😝
    - My Mad Fat Diary (probably any episode, really)
    - The Haunting of the Hill House (horror with supernatural elements that allows for almost an entirely psychological reading; maybe episode 8?)
    - Everything's Gonna Be Okay (has a character on the autism spectrum, notably played by an autistic actress, and other autistic people were involved in the making of the show; episodes 5 or 10 of S1 might be particularly interesting to react to)
Anyway, I'm done haha, thanks for the great content ❤️

  • @Lucifronz
    @Lucifronz Před 2 lety +4

When you have a lot of trauma to sift through, and you want to know why you are the way you are, you tend to be introspective.
It doesn't surprise me at all that she could come to whatever conclusion she came to while speaking to a doctor for a brief amount of time. It's quite likely she had figured this much out over years of her life, but never really had anyone to talk to about it. Knowing the problem is quite different from knowing the solution.
But that's most likely just me projecting. I just find it odd that you think the diagnosis came from a short meeting or that all examinations of our own minds come purely from talking to a psychiatrist.
I've never in my life spoken to a psychiatrist and yet I can tell you a great deal about myself, my motivations, why I am the way I am. I may not be entirely accurate on all of the details, but no one knows my mind better than me. Not even a doctor.
Introspection is a curse, though. It's not healthy to think as much as I do about my own mental state. It really weighs on you.

I know you're quoting ru paul, but i was kind of surprised you would share that thought. The amount of times i was made to feel like i couldn't be a good person because i was depressed was a huge reason i didn't like talking about it for the first decade. Just because you're depressed ir struggling with self respect or self esteem or self love does not mean you cannot have basic empathy like everyone else. Obviously these things are only going to help you be better able to be a healthy partner in whatever kind of relationship you have with individuals. Really think it's a counterproductive sentiment, and considering the marked propensity to guilt and self loathing in these kinds of issues, seems pretty obvious. Tl;dr people who don't love themselves can love other people bc we can still have basic empathy. It's just often much more easy to care about others than yourself. A trait I have heard commonly, even in neurotypical people. Wasn't expecting to hear that shaming concept from someone so normally intuitive to the possible affects of word choice.

In “the states” use of these holds and admission against will is highly influenced by whether you’re carrying a shiny insurance card on your person or you seem like you can pay the bill. Stressed out young female with no history of suicidal behavior found in a fancy hotel is 5150’d taking up resources she doesn’t even need (in this case she was purposefully manipulating the system as a fugitive for personal gain) while a homeless person talking to himself with no shoes is shown the door. I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes. It’s disgusting.
To clarify obviously she needed the ventilator but when she says if she wanted to kill herself she would have succeeded that should be all they need to know this person is lucid enough to understand the risks of their actions and doesn’t need to take up any more of this doctors time. Anna Sororkin was brilliant though she knew how this would play out.

  • @LuminarySol

Hi Dr Elliott, I saw you touch a little bit on this video about having to distance yourself from a patient and refer them to another professional due to transference.
I'm fairly new in the profession and it has happened to me twice where I had to stop seeing a patient due to their situation being too close to my own issues so I couldn't really do my job properly without detriment to myself, mentally.
I felt like I left both patients hanging, like I had a responsibility to them I let them down because of my own issues/incompetence. One of them responded by saying he was "incurable" and the other said I was just passing him on because I didn't want to help him (despite in both cases that being absolutely not true, I was referring them to more qualified professionals)
Anyways, without getting too much detail into it my own specific cases.
*Do you have any advice on how to handle situations like this? I would really appreciate it, as I feel it was one of the hardest things I've had to do yet.*
(I think it could also be a great topic for a video, on how to handle ending the patient/psychologist relationship and determining when that is a good course of action)

Is it immoral...yes. is it a crime...no. Anna claimed the money she "borrowed" would be returned and they never were. This is theft and It's a crime.
