    Hey Patsy! Love this video. I actually use Spellbinders and other thin dies on fabric and felt all the time. It works especially well with the electric Sizzix Vagabond. But even with the Bigshot, it will work - you just can't stack more than one at a time. :) Hope that helps!

    Really enjoyed your video. I was searching how to emboss and cut with 3D Sizzix plates and the Sizzix Texture Fabric roll material. And this came up and I was pulled in to view. Oh my gosh the metal fused to fabric is so cool. Not to mention the embossing of your fabric with the pellon interface. It is not exactly what I was searching for but close enough and opens my mind to a whole new world of play. I'm a fabric person first and paper second. I've been playing with making note books mini ones and want to use faux leathers and the Texture or similar materials and have ruined three brand new 3-D dies now using two different die embossing machines. Two the very first time I ran them through with just one layer of the material. That's a very expensive and painful experience. Both machines one small Gemini Go turns out is known for doing this but didn't know until too late. And the other is a very simple classic manual. I have a better understanding now to avoid this. I ordered a Big Shot electric and they are discontinued so hope mine arrives next week as it was the last the store I ordered from had it in stock. Another I ordered arrived super damaged due to poor shipping and protection by seller. So I think I am ready to try again. I have many of the Steele Rule dies you demonstrated today but have not tried to emboss cut outs but again you opened my mind to WHY NOT. Great tutorial and thank you for sharing.

    Hi,
    I haven't washed any of the quilts that have fabrics I've embossed; I've only used the embossing on wall hangings. My instinct tells me that the embossing would either wash out or significantly lessen.
    I do quilt on my fusible applique shapes, but I don't quilt an "all-over" pattern that just kind of "runs over" them. I use decorative threads that embellish the applique piece. If you scroll through my blog, there are tons of photos of how to do this.

    Thanks for your nice words about the appliques on the quilt behind me. Those appliques were all cut by my Sizzix Big Shot machine using our line of Appli-K-Kutz dies. If your local quilt shop does not carry them yet, visit our on line web store, and in the Search Box, type Appli-K-Kutz.

    Hi Kacklebird,
    (This is the only way I can respond to a question, so that's why I'm not emailing you directly). YES, you are correct! You will still need to use a shim to raise the Accuquit Go dies high enough, but it will work perfectly for you. Try stacking 2 used Priority Mail envelopes on top of one another. Good luck and enjoy your Big Shot Pro. I have one as well and it's a great machine!

  • @Ernpats
    @Ernpats Před 12 lety +1

    Sorry, but I can't answer that. I use my Big Shot to cut applique shapes, not geometric shapes for piecing, so I've never looked into the sizes available for geometric shapes. I'd go to the Sizzix web site and click on any die that says it cuts 5 in squares. They give die dimensions if you click for more info.
    Good luck,
    Patsy

    @Ernpats Před 11 lety

    We still have 1 or 2 left in our store. CZcams won't allow me to post a link, so go to the store address listed in the video and write Sizzix cutting systems in the search box.
    You can use the Go dies in the Big Shot if they are 6 inches wide or less AND you put a shim underneath to raise them up. I do this all the time and know it works! Beware that some Go dies are mislabeled as being 6 in wide-they are actually wider. Only way to be safe is to measure the die w/a measuring tape,

    The purple one is the same as the other Big Shots; it was the colorway of the machine when Sizzix had partnered with Westminster Fibers. I believe we still have 1 or 2 in that color in our online store, but the machine is the same, no matter which color it comes in.

  • @Ernpats
    @Ernpats Před 11 lety +1

    The actual physical die must be 6 inches or less. I have been told by many people that Accuquilt has marked a number of dies as being 6 inches wide that are actually a little more than 6 inches. The only safe way I know to handle this is to measure Accuquilt dies that look to be around 6 inches before they are purchased.

    Is it normal for the back of the accuquilt die (green plastic) to have white outlines of the steel shapes? I have only used the die 5 times (did not layer fabric more than 2 times but I am using both the accuquilt cutting mat and the sizzix cutting mats- . Sorry, the only way I can answer a question is to post here. The background quilt is made with die cut applique shapes, all cut on my Sizzix machine. That die is an Appli-K-Kutz die called "Feather, large" and the pattern and dies are available on my web site. CZcams doesn't allow url posting here, so google Patsy Thompson Designs and you'll find it.

    question about the machine I'm new to it. I just cut some organza circles, sandwich between the
    2 plastic pieces and ran it through the machine. Perfect circles! but the die was slightly
    embedded in the plastic piece and left an impression on it. Am I supposed to cover it with
    something to prevent that. No mention of it in the instructions? Love the birds, can't wait to try.

    • @patsern
      @patsern  Před 7 lety

      The die will cut slightly into the plastic plates, there is no way around that. But it does not affect the performance. I have used my plastic plates hundreds of times with no need to replace them...they look pretty used though!

  • @Ernpats
    @Ernpats Před 12 lety

    I've never seen that before. I suspect it's because the accuquilt mat is too wide to use as a shim and the steel rule is being forced through the bottom of the wood block that holds the die inside the green plastic case. I would always place my shim below the bottom Sizzix cutting mat rather than inside my "sandwich,", and I would use something thinner for the shim, like the cardboard layers from used Priority Mail envelopes.

    I have no idea what happened to you, but it may be the way you oriented the fabric on the die. I would watch Ebony Love's CZcams videos about die cutting strips/geometric shapes and if that doesn't answer your questions, I would email her directly. I don't use my die cutter for cutting strips, etc; I am using it to cut applique shapes bonded to fusible web, and the paper/glue layer stabilizes the fabric. This allows me to disregard how I orient the fabric on my die.

    Ahh ... see I was given wrong information then bcuz I was told the BigShot had a 6.5" wide maximum not 6". I'll keep that in mind when buying any of the larger dies. So is there a 5" square die that will work on the Big Shot ? I'm looking for a 5" square to use towards quilting. I tried the Accuquilt Go 5" square die but it's 6.5" wide. Is there a die that's actually a 5" square cuz I seem to find smaller sizes but nothing that size that fits into a BigShot. =[

    Accuquilt Go dies that are 6 inches wide or less will work on the Big Shot, but remember that the 6 inches refers to the actual die width, not the width of the shape that's being cut. I don't know the width of the die you're using. You will need to use a shim to raise the height of your die. I cut 2 used Priority mail envelopes into 6 inch strips and lay them on top of one another underneath the die. This will raise the die high enough to be cut as it goes through the roller system.

      That is called the multipurpose platform. It has a series of different "shims" that can be placed underneath the die to raise it if it needs to be raised. It came as part of the package on the older Sizzix cutters. I don't know if it is still part of the package or if it needs to be purchased separately.

    Patsy, you say that dies up to 6 inches wide will fit through the Sizzix Machine. I sell Accuquilt cutters and dies and a few of my customers have bought the dies, based on your video, only to find that while the 5 inch wide die, like the feathers you show, will fit through, 6 inch wide dies do not. Nothing to do with the shape on the die, the die molding of 6 inches wide is just a fraction too wide for the Sizzix.
