I bought Lauren Bacall's autobiography at a garage sale several years ago. In it she describes Bogart's passion for sailing. Apparently he was a really skilled sailor as he won several west coast yacht races. At the time that I read her book the yacht had just arrived at a Connecticut boat yard for overhaul.
Thank you for this....a rare insight into the man, his time and the 2 great loves of his life! Bogart is a happy soul now that "Baby" is finally with him. R.I.P. to them both.
Bogart and Bacall did a radio program called Bold Venture that ran 1951-1952. The series ran 58 episodes. Fun to listen too. Bogart referrers to Bacall character as "sailor".
It's actually amazing that folks would comment about the absence of sound in vintage clips such as this one. How well I recall the small, compact Kodak 8mm home movie cameras. They were often wind up and a big innovation was color film. And yes, there was no sound. We never thought anything about it.
Shoot most of us couldn't even afford color film. LOL Our home movies were in glorious black and white, if we had a movie projector. I remember my Aunt and Uncle had a Woody Woodpecker cartoon, and that was a treat, to be able to see a cartoon on demand.
Brace67 The only way to have sound in those days was to have a professional 16mm camera with a lip-synch to a tape recorder, which would be a big recorder indeed.
"Folks"? You mean all of these Zillionials who can't fathom living life "offline". I'm not painting all that way as there are plenty of young kids who still read books, live outdoors, and enjoy one on one conversations, but a majority of Westernized youth have had their perception of reality contaminated by social media and technology.
Holy Underwear, Batman ! That is some fantastic and fabulous footage ! Wonderful to see Bogie without his toupee. And I noticed that back then director/screenwriter Richard Brooks wore the same crewcut that he had till he died. Probably first acquired it when he served in the military in WWII. I've read that Bogie was never happier then when he was sailing. He sure looks happy in these seagoing scenes ! And that his wife Betty Bacall wasn't all that crazy about sailing but she participated for Bogies's sake. Now that is a loving wife !! :-)
I got married on this gorgeous vessel June 19, 1993. Santana used to be owned by a couple of architects in San Francisco. This happen to be my ex husband‘s sister‘s boyfriend‘s uncles. They let us get married on Santana at no cost. Unfortunately their captain was a bit of a drunk and he hired inexperienced people to crew the boat. We went into an accidental jibe in raccoon straits in San Francisco Bay. The block and tackle to the main sale as it was heading into this accidental jibe flew out uncontrollably hit me on the shoulder and picked me up by the neck and threw me down. Damn near broke my neck. It was right before the wedding ceremony. If you can only imagine what I looked like on my honeymoon! What an incredible opportunity though to get married on such a historical vessel. Long divorced that husband but the memories will stay with me forever.
Bogart loved sailing and virtually anything associated with the sea; Bacall learned to love sailing after becoming Bogart's wife. It's interesting to note that in the movies here, Bogart is smoking incessantly, which ultimately led to his developing throat cancer. Richard Brooks, who filmed these home movies, was the prominent director who made Elmer Gantry, which won Oscars for Burt Lancaster and Shirley Jones; The Professionals, a classic western with Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan and Claudia Cardinale; Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with Newman and Taylor and directed Bogart in a newspaper drama.
Well said and well put ! Thanx for your comment ! Yes, sadly, Bogie was a very heavy smoker. And the liked his scotch. Though he was not an alcoholic, the mixture of nicotine and alcohol makes for a stronger chance to get cancer !! Poor fellow...only in his late 50s when he dies. Didn't get a chance to see his kids grow up. :-(
This was 72 years ago. At no other time in human history have we been able to see recorded footage from so long ago. The sky and water is the same blue as now but God how the world has changed.
I was born in the wrong time! I would have loved growing up in the late 40's and all of the 50's, I would assume a simpler time " those were the days "
Beautiful colour quality & good exposure. Looks to be 16mm Kodachrome. Great to see the Big White Steamer than ran passengers from Los Angeles Harbor to Catalina.
0:12 (Don't Bogart that Joint my Friend) 1;30 he's storing the reefing line from the port side.LOL 1;34 "Hurry up there Slim darling" Thanks for uploading, that was fun.
Matt Jisa Camcorders (personal video cameras) were first introduced in the 80s. Before that, personal clips were filmed by using 8mm cameras with actual film reels, so no sound was able to be recorded this way. Hence the soundless clip in our case. This is actually common knowledge for those who have the faintest clue about technology. The rest of you, like yourself, can keep on being utterly clueless, demanding sound in personal clips before the 80s, and in general stick to your conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception that wealthy people can acquire the latest technology (especially when this technology is non-existent). The irony in our case is that, this particular clip is from the 40s and in color, so good old Bogie, was in fact a proud owner of an advanced technologically device for its time.
How long will it be before someone invents a Computer program that can sample voices, read their lips & add sound to these fantastic home movies? ( Tho it probably would take the mystique away).
Good footage. Seems to be shot at 18 frames per sec and adjusted to the normal 24 fps giving what appears to be speeded up action. I didn't expect sound.
This makes me sad. All of these people are long ago dead. I've seen these along with some others with a young Sinatra, David Niven, Romanoff, and others- I'd really like to have a lip reading expert tell me what's being said on them.
That would be rather difficult to accomplish, in light of Lauren and Joan having been dead for years. And though Olivia is still alive, she is over 100 years old and lives outside Paris, France.
@@juliemnm8273 He actually died from esophageal cancer, same as the type that Christopher Hitchens died from. Bogart just got there a little sooner, probably because he smoked the higher tar cigarettes from that earlier time. Chain smoking and hard liquor are are dual assault on the esophagus. ...But at least they had a great time when they were alive!
Fair enough. But they should get some screen time. Surprise Joan and Olivia and have them unknowingly hand out an award together. That'll be big news. Two sisters who haven't talked to each other in decades. They'll either be civil, or they'll fight. Good ratings either way.

Nice to see Humphrey Bogart relaxing as himself and smiling instead of seeing him as the Actor he portays as the serious tough guy that never smiles
He smiled a little in the African Queen, even laughed a little.
@@717rocket It was the Gin and Kate Hepburn.
@@Brace67 very true.. ha ha.
He smiled at times while acting, sardonic smile?

imagine going in a nice boat ride and passing Lauren bacall and Humphrey Bogart with all their friends 😂
God Lauren Bacall was so beautiful here without all the Hollywood makeup, especially that last shot of her.
She was beautiful but it is clear she was wearing at least SOME makeup.
wrong she wasn't beautiful. she was below average she looked like an old woman. people born in the 1890s-early1920s were a lot better looking
god damn son, she looks like a man
She's the embodiment of sexy.

it was one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. "there are no pockets in a shroud"
A friend of my brother's met and had a conversation with Lauren Bacall at a party in NY many years ago. He said she a fantastic , down to earth lady.
God, that first indoor shot of her.... she's so 'movie star' !!!!! Only 25 years old.
Beautiful.
now they're sailing away together
