The 1929 Gibson L1 ‘Robert Johnson’ - Guitar Stories #7 with The Washboard Resonators

- Guitar story #7 and this time we make 25 year dream come true.
The Gibson L1 is associated with delta blues legend Robert Johnson due to the Memphis portrait photo.
After pouring over photos of these since the mid 1990s and hoping to one day get one the dream came true in October 2020.
This is a 1929 one with sunburst finish exactly like RJ’s. It sounds great and hopefully this comes across on the film.

Had to laugh at the Grimsby: Twin city to Chernobyl lol. Really enjoying your videos by the way👍
It’s a perfectly fine place!!
Robert Johnson played and recorded with either with a Gibson made "Kalamazoo" K-14 or a "Stella" branded parlour guitar.
He preferred those because they didn't cost much money and they sounded good compared to other cheaper priced guitars for that era.
There’s no solid evidence for what he actually played on the recordings. We know he had to borrow a guitar on the first session.
@@TheWashboardResonators watch the interview videos with Johnny Shines, who travelled repeatedly with Robert and was about the most straight shooting, no bullshit speaker about Robert, as was Honeyboy Edwards.
Robert Johnson preferred a Kalamazoo or a Stella branded guitar, but the one Robert had been using was an archtop acoustic that also had "F" sound holes in the body.
The guitar Robert had initially used to record in San Antonio, was lost when a hotel that Robert and Johnny had been staying in caught fire.
I own a gibson l1 robert johnson signature for 6 years now and I cannot get enough of it!
Very nice guitars. They’re actually braced in a more modern ‘X’ pattern so although they don’t sound like the old ones they’re really nice instruments with the cool looks!! ❤️
Cool vid!
Thanks!
Congrats! I'm happy for you - I know the feeling when you finally manage to get your dream guitar (or one of several...;-) )
It was a longtime coming getting the L-1. If it wasn’t for covid I wouldn’t have needed the money tied up in the Duolian. It was a difficult decision as I only really buy stuff I know I want. Lovely old classics. I was up to 11 resonators at the time and although I’d bought more since the Duolian they were spoken for on work projects so it was a case of last in and first out.
Congratulations! I’m currently on my own hunt for an L1, think I’ll need some of your luck to find one!
They’re up and down. Do try and play any before you buy. I played four over the years - two where weak, one really good and this one is absolutely killer. They’re around. Expensive on the reverb and dealer sites. I think you’d do good asking around the forums and Facebook groups looking for a private sale.
I've just found your channel. I've now got loads to catch up on !Cheers
Excellent!!
Such an iconic guitar, you must never sell it😂
This is a lifer unless a cleaner AND better sounding one comes up. Cleaner is possible but I doubt better sounding. 🎯
