      Picked up a hitch hiker outside a village in KZN and dropped him off at the NG Kerk in the village 25km away where I lived at the time.
      Around a week or so later, he was on the front page of the Beeld having been arrested for murdering his family and burying them in his garden in JHB.

    When you find out that all the countries who have the most serial killers also have some of the most law enforcement funding per person, suddenly you realize they are absolutely everywhere, and some countries are just better equipped to detect that there are serial killings even happening.

    • @HappyBeezerStudios
      @HappyBeezerStudios Před 3 lety +7

      That would mean countries like Italy, Japan, Germany or France are less equipped to find serial killers than South Africa?
      If we go by per capita the statistics change a bit and developed industrial nations have better rates , in this case less serial killers (both in total and per 100,000 compared to SA) because they probably detect and treat potential candidates before they can act. Well with the exception of the US, which still has about 3 times as much (0.99 per 100,000) as the next dense country, Australia (0.33 per 100,000) and Britain (0.30 per 100,000).

    On the subject of the death penalty, I offer you this quote which neatly sums up my views, and has since I was old enough to understand what the death penalty is:
    "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement." - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
    I think, at the core of it, it comes down to if you're willing to risk an innocent person being put to death for a crime they didn't commit. I know I'm not, which is why I'm against it. Innocent people being put in jail for crimes they didn't commit is bad enough, but at least then it's possible to somewhat rectify the situation. You can let someone go and give them reparations for the life you destroyed, you can't bring someone back from the dead.

I still stand by what I feel though, and absolutely did say we gotta fix this stuff since there are innocent people going to jail for no reason. We need to find a better way to judge and sentence people based on evidence, or be more thorough, something does have to change 100%, but I do believe that, if there is no shadow of a doubt someone killed somebody and all evidence points to them and it's clearly confirmed they did it (think that couple that absolutely killed their children in recent years and went on vacation shortly after), then that person should be given the death sentence.
      If not that, at least life in jail. Honestly they're very similar as you'll die in prison either way, one just has a longer duration.

      @@jellomiki - I absolutely DO know how easy and common it is for innocent people to get convicted, and I still think we need capital punishment. That said, I'd feel a heck of a lot better if there was true accountability for prosecutors and police who act like the legal system is something they can play with, and if trials weren't designed like bloody game shows where 12 deliberately chosen people selected precisely BECAUSE they don't know anything about the relevant fields of science and all the ways prosecutors commonly pervert justice get to decide which of two game show hosts is the most persuasive. The whole thing is ridiculous, anyone who knows anything about forensics or criminology will never be allowed on a jury, and that's a massive problem. When ignorance is a prerequisite, it means there's something very wrong going on. Personally, I'd rather redo a good chunk of our legal system.

Places like India, Pakistan, South Africa, Columbia etc huge areas that are basically wide open country where both dumping a body and hiding the fact you're killing someone is far easier.
