  • Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally discuss the concept of Zakat, the obligatory charity in Islam. They highlight its distinction from general charity (Sadaqah) and its purpose in purifying wealth and aiding the needy. Zakat is typically 2.5% of one's net liquefiable assets, calculated based on the lunar calendar. Dr. Shabir discusses the historical context of Zakat and suggests the need for modern interpretations to accommodate contemporary financial systems and assets beyond gold and silver. He advocates for a progressive Zakat system that taxes the wealthy proportionately higher to alleviate the burden on the less affluent. Finally, he outlines the eight categories of Zakat recipients as delineated in the Quran, emphasizing the broad scope of legitimate uses for Zakat funds.

This is very good and nice when Dr Safiyyah Ally ask Dr Shabir Ally questions and Dr Shabir answers with very clear answer. It is more " Lifegiving" than Dr Shabir is alone and again giving clear answer. It shows how important people is. Dr Safiyyah gives also a very warm and lovely impression. I think this will help Muslims to win people in the western world. I like the Let the Quran speaks since it gives a lot of knowledge even though I am not a muslim and disagree to a lot of nowadays militant Islam.

I have a different perspective. Zakat is calculated as a percentage of wealth, which means whether you have a large or small fortune, the impact of paying it will feel the same.

Do we have any authentic ahadith which explain to us how to calculate zakat? In modern times, many people have mortgages or business have overdrafts. How do we calculate zakat then? is it based on income and expenditure for the lunar year ? Some people have savings, but their outstanding mortgage could be more than their savings , how do we calculate zakat then? Obviously people with mortgages tend to be the ones who are working and earning an income, so you would expect them to pay zakat.

Also i always had a question. Zakat is one a year but if i usually pay in April, let’s say i had 10k last April and still have it now so I pay on that but in if in last June I had 12k and this June i have this amount too, I have to pay in April and June ?

    • @Nulmay24
      @Nulmay24 Před měsícem

You may have to pay for the excess 2k in June. Convert to lunar year correction which would fall 10 days earlier.

@@zahrab3352 Zakat is to be paid when the savings attain maturity - that is the amount in your possession for one lunar year. It should be paid to the recipients mentioned in Chapter 9 verse 60. Allah mentioned 8 categories. Preference to your near relatives, neighbours and friends provided that they fall in the above category of muslims. It's very unlikely that all the 8 categories come under your vicinity (balad in Arabic ) meaning your locality in this context, If there are 5, distribute to them, if 4 or 3 give accordingly. If there are eligible persons nearby it's not allowed to transport to a distant place.

    Excellent.
Towards the end you stated that there has to be a system and then elaborated correctly that there are 8 categories of recipients of Zakat.
Hence according to the Great Allama Ghulam Pervez, Zakat is the ECONOMIC SYSTEM OF THE QURAN.
Zakat is what is paid by the state to those in need.
Sadakat is what each individual gives as a " tax" to the state. It is a joke, even though we may wish it, that we only give 2.5% of our excess wealth to the state. The Quran addresses the issue by stating that whatever is surplus to our needs should be given to the State for the benifit of progressing the Country and its people, vi's a vie, Schools, Hospitals, roads, infrastructure etc etc.
If a country has enough wealth to take care of its citizens, such that the state does not need the taxes of its people then in such a case the citizens are truly living in an ISLAMIC COUNTRY.
Libya for example, under Colonel M. Ghadaffi had so much wealth from oil that its citizens did NOT have to pay for Gas, electric. houses, education, hospital treatment. If a student wished to undertake a course that could not be provided by the Universities in Libya, then they were paid to go and study abroad!!! AMAZING.
To summarise, the Quran has TWO SYSTEMS that it talks about:
    1. ZAKAT = THE ECONOMIC SYSTEM.
    2. SALAT= THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DIVINE SYSTEM.
Aqeemu-salat= ESTABLISH THE DIVINE SYSTEM. It does not mean establish prayer! Were not the people already praying from even the times of Abraham??
The DIVINE SYSTEM is that which Allah swt lays out in the Quran..... A GOVERNMENT RUN, ACCORDING TO QURAN. Such a Government does not discriminate between any of its citizens and treats them all equally, regardless of faith or no faith.

Dearest Sister and Brother: May Allah (swt) guide me as I ask what I believe to be an extremely important...though perhaps somewhat distasteful....question of you. My heart aches for the Palestinian people and the suffering that they are experience even as I write this.
Speaking only for myself, I have resources I can share but have been hesitant, knowing that HAMAS is inextricably entwined itself among the
people. Is there a way to know that gifts that are shared will find their
way to the people who are suffering and not be used to sustain the carnage? Are you aware of resources or venues that can be trusted to
pass along help to the people who need it. Allah knows my heart and I admit that I am only one person but I want to be part of the solution and not promote the problem.
May Allah grant you ease and that your hearts be soothed.

*Dr shabir is good to listen to, except sometimes like this when he tries to import the tax system used by the West*
2.5 is fair for everyone, specially the fact that one first need to have amount to ~3oz of gold for a whole year. If at any point that amount reduced, the counting resets*
*on top of that the optional charity is encouraged*
The sunnah of the prophet pbuh can be deduced by his action, his agreeing to something to saying it by himself.
Many of the sunnah didn't the prophet necessarily said it out loud.
*it's better to remind people the importance of paying the zakat than trying to change a structure that's already in place

Dr. Shabbir rightly pointed out that gold coins are not legal tender today. Since you are supposedly so much more knowledgeable, how much should a person living at borderline poverty level pay, who is heavily in debt and doesn't make enough to make ends meet for his family's needs, but his wife has a few pieces of gold jewellery?
How many people in this situation end up selling their jewellery just to ensure their zakat is paid because of the indoctrination?
Suggest you read the Zakat tax law in Saudi Arabia.

    Zakat is NOT sadakah.
Your prophet Muhammad (Ahmad) does not accept sadakah.
Surely that means Islām is proposing 0 poverty.
And today after 1445 years still 'sadakah ' is practiced.
Every Muslim should receive abundance to LIFT them from such 'ailment'.
By the way purity is iba.
Zakat means documentation instruction practical with rememberance.
    Or accounting.
    Thanks for the great videos.

@@tejbirring9673 That's correct. God is not any of our ideas that we place upon him. He existed before we did and he will remain in existence for eternity. He does have a system that he likes. And that is everyone works their land and eats their food. Each person pays the same 10% of their income no matter how rich they might be. God does not make the rich pay 30% when everyone else is paying 10%.
