Hon., U're an intelligent fellow, the name of a people goes a long way to tell the origin of the people, the word 'Ukwuani' is an Igbo word. Ani is an Igbo word that means land, that's what most part of Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi states people call land. Even some parts of Imo and abia call 'ani'. What Kenechi is calling 'Ukwuani' language is dialect. Am from Imo State and heard almost all the things you people said. While there are some communities in Imo state I can't hear their dialects the way I heard yours. There are so many dialects in southeast states I can't understand the way I did understand yours. The issue is that when we gather together every person tries speaking the central Igbo. If you claim that your biological father is not your father that does not change the fact that you came out from his loins; before God and man the fact still remains that you are his offspring. Whether you accept that 'Ukwuani' is Igbo or not the fact still remains that before God and man 'Ukwuani' is of Igbo descent. All none Igbo communities surrounding you still call you Igbo. When you were in Bendel state you were called Igbo Bendel or Bendel Igbo. Really, there is no basis for this argument.

I studied linguistics ma... And I can tell you for a fact that when it comes to language, distance and influence from other cultures affect the language, but this dialectal difference is usually in the vocabulary, phonology sometimes spelling but all speakers of the language are mutually intelligible.
Dialect is simply a variety of a particular language.
State creation and division and cultural interaction with other ethnic groups has affected them and also caused identity confusion .

British , Americans , Canadians and Australians speak similar/same dialects that does not make them a single nationality or in our context a single ethnicity. Ethnicity is a different concept entirely from dialectic similarities. Ethnicity represents the unique heritage of a people; history, record of lineages , record of affiliations, record of even wars etc kept and preserved by them alone so it is not polluted or blemished. A British cannot stand up and say or claim he is a custodian or spokesman of the Australian heritage . They are only relatives or cousins and lets be careful of the of a particular group and their narcissistic tendencies. The goal of narcissism is always to emasculate other peoples heritage. We relate with them as relatives or cousins which we in actuality are and that is as far as it should go but we are not please and please and please and please again ethinc igbos. Our forebears never with emphasis on the word never handed the igbo heritage to us and we are therefore not custodians of the igbo heritage . We are profound custodians of the ukwuani heritage and as such conferred with all authorities over that heritage giving us precedence in projecting, promoting, preserving and passing the beautiful heritage over to the next generation. The day a british rises up to attempt to project the american heritage as essentially a british heritage because of some twisted notion of history and geography should be the day the American remembers the charge and duty he owes to preserving his heritage. If not it will be blemished. Lets be wise!

Dialectical differences do not mean language differences. Ukwuani itself is an Igbo word. In some Igbo dialects, it is spelt Ukwu-ala. It is Ukwuani in Anambra dialect. The unwholesome role of brutal Benin kings helped to create today's ambiguity in Western igboland through their military exploits of their vulnerable neighbors who are mostly Igbos.

I beg to disagree , that is your own version of history . IT does not account for the migrations of the stock igbos from heartland east and below the Niger. Communities like the ukwuani communities had inhabitants and clans edoid/iduoid in origin before the influx of the Igbos and at other arrival periods. Nnamdi Azikiwe hinted of this in one of his books relating to his own part. This peddle of half and proxy history does not go down with people like me. People like me believe the true, total and complete history of an heritage should be told. These communities where not aboriginally igbos and by extension are not ethnic igbos.

And they are speaking Igbo dialects instead of bini language. Their names, towns and villages bear Igbo names.

Our mothers we call NNE that is the beginning we have the same language we understand ourselves we do not need translators to understand ourselves if we listen very well. Even our music is same !!! Some other tribes that came to settle among us during the conquest of the Benin empire try to divide us they can not divide then not even now. We are Igbo

The igbos don't even accept the Igbozor people of Asaba as Igbos so what makes you think they will go as far and accepting the Ukwuani as Igbos.
Next thing now someone will say the Ika people of Agbor and the Aboh people are Igbos.
    A very pointless argument!

      Another uniformed and confused commenter.
Now listen, history has it that some Igbos were sold to then Benin empire as slaves and as such they interacted with the Benin people and it affects the language causing dialectal difference, cultural differences but after the invasion of the Benin empire some of these slaves migrated and settled in some parts of delta as we have it today and continued to interact with other cultural groups.
You should understand that the more the distance and cultural mix up and interaction, the more the dialectal difference. This makes it a variety of one language and is mutually intelligible to speakers of same language despite their cultural differences which may be due to geographical situation and dialectal differences.
Now if ukwuani and the others like them chooses to alienate themselves from their Igbo origin so be it then and let them continue to identify with the Benin as the slaves that they were as this is a clear case of deliberate mental Slavery which is obviously for political reasons.
