When we talk about Igbos, we should know that IGBO IS IGBO. There is no Delta igbo, IMO igbo, Anambra igbo, etc. What we have is dialects which is all IGBO. When we talk of English, we have English spoken in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. They are all English speakers but it sounds different, pronounced different but is English. Some words are different but will be linked to the region of where that type of English is spoken. Coming back to the Nigerian soil, in Yorubaland there are different dialects of Yoruba from the different states. The Ondo speak their Yoruba different from the Ijebus, but it is the same Yoruba.. My point here is that whether you say I am an Ika, Anioma, Ikwerre, Owerri, Wawa, Nnewi, Onisha etc, it is all IGBO with similar sounds or slight deviations in pronunciations, identical culture and beliefs. If the deviations are much more, then it is still a subgroup of IGBO which is still IGBO. The uneducated and the deluded that have been brain washed with division which is a political poison to break the Igbos is what has perpetuated the narrative of Igbos in Delta state, Rivers state and possibly Bayelsa state to be different. I therefore, state strongly with love and support that you preach your message by making it clear you are IGBO and those in a similar dilemma should stand and hold their God given IGBO identity by name and culture.

There is nothing like fake Igbo or original Igbo... I am from Enugu State and i speak Both Ewe Dialect and also central Igbo. When I speak Ewe Dialect I also get the same... What kind of Igbo is that? If the person want to know the dialect i will respond calmly but if he or she is being rude I will put them in their place... The reason why most people think the Igbo of the south east speak one Igbo language is because we all learned to speak central Igbo for easier communication otherwise it would have been the same thing with other Igbo outside of south east.. The bottom line is that we all have our own native Igbo dialect and still speak central Igbo.. Igbo of most people from Delta state are even more central than most of us in the south east... But which ever dialect one speaks. Igbo is Igbo.. I am proud Ewe man, from Ugbo in Enugu State. Igbo bu Igbo...

even closer to central Igbo than most Igbo dialects, I am from Anambra State, I am always lost when Abiriba and Ohafia people speak their dialect amongst themselves, I can barely understand 10% of what they are saying but I do understand atleast 70% of delta Igbo so if Delta Igbo dialect is more closer to central than the Ohafia/Abiriba dialect then Delta Igbo is Igbo period.

@justclaribelltv474 I was coming to say that people often confuse dialect with common language spoken by a tribe. This ignorance is so high among Igbos from south south. They DO NOT know that every other Igbo person has his or her own Igbo dialect just like them. They often think that the urban, central or Igboizugbe language that Igbos of SE speak are their own Igbo language. But this is not true. If you are born and or raised in a metropolitan Igbo cities that have Igbos of every dialect, you are likely going to speak central Igbo. This central Igbo or Igboizugbe is not an Igbo dialect but a made up Igbo language. Finally, there is nothing like I am from Delta. Delta is a name of a state in Nigeria. It is just like a person saying I am from Benue state. That does not tell your ethnic origin. In Benue state we have Tiv tribe, Idoma trip and others. You can rather say you are from Anioma, Ika Igbo, etc. Even Onitsha in Anambra have continued to shout they are not Igbo until they got tired, they are now tired of calling other Igbos "nwa oye Igbo". What our Delta Igbo fathers and uncles are doing to their children after the war is not good. Before the war, though Igbos of all dialects understand their differences in terms of language and culture they still see themselves as one ethnic group.

Firstly, no part of Igbo has superiority over other or have authenticity claim more than others but I will humbly advise my brothers/sister from Aniocha. Stop attaching delta to your Identity. Delta is just a state that was created less than 30yrs ago. Is like someone saying Anambra igbo or Enugu igbo, Imo igbo, Abia igbo or Eboni Igbo it's makes no sense. Your Igbo period. Adding Delta before your Identity makes you sound ignorant of who u are cos your grandfathers where Igbos not Delta Igbos.

Is so funny delta igbo is clearer than most communities in igboland like nsukka and few others in enugu state, abakaliki, afikpo and most others in Ebonyi state, abiriba, igbere, and few others in Abia state, some communities in Anambra and imo state. No igbo person needs interpreter to understand your people, but some of the communities i mentioned in igboland an average igbo person doesn't understand them at all when they speak their village language unless they use central igbo. Having said that, most of your people are to be blamed because they are in habit of denying their igboness unless when it suits them well to claim igbo. Real Ndigbo don't choose when to be identified as ndigbo - no igbo person will tell you he/she is anambra igbo or ebonyi igbo unlike some of you would say delta igbo as you have said. If you really see yourself as an igbo person, nobody will tell you otherwise. If they say yours is fake, you have every right to tell them that you are the real igbo, not them simple. Is common to hear some of us from different parts of 5 states that make up southeast to jokingly suggest our individual state(whether they are from Ebonyi, imo abia, enugu, or anambra state). is the real igbo and owner of the centralized igbo language, but nobody takes it seriously because nobody doubts their igboness; hence, they don't need validation. it ends up as a joke; it is unlike most of your people who are having an identity crisis. Can you honestly answer this question: if you are in sokoto right now, a local ask you which tribe you are from? Would you emphatically say igbo? No! At best, you will say aniocha, not even delta igbo, but another person from that 5 states would say igbo not abia igbo nor imo igbo. Therefore, you guys should stop letting any person, whether from southeast or any other region, to tell you where you belong. There is nothing to be bargained about your identity if you truly know who you are. Your state is delta, and your tribe is igbo simple. Not in between delta igbo or aniocha. If you're an igbo, you're an igbo.

When Igbos are in the north or in any other country in the world, Igbo bu Igbo tbere is no Delta, no Ikwere or whaetever else. Funny enough all these distinctions and discriminations occur more in Lagos than in any other place.
As for your native name Ekwy, Ekwu, or Ekwutosi, It is a typical Igbo name you'll find in any part of Igboland whether Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Rivers or anywhere they speak Igbo language. In some areas it's strictly female name in Abia state both male and female children. It may not be a common name like Ngozi or Chidinma but it is popular and appreciable. It is usually given to a baby either when the mother has challenges before conception or challenges during pregnancy for which there might have been the tendency to "bad mouth" the woman. The name is usually given to the baby in pride for overcoming the "badmouth" whatever it may be.

On the subject of Delta Igbo brouhaha education is what the lot of people need. That the Chinese can pick up 40 percent plus or minus of what the Japanese or Korean speaks and bear similar names most times does not make a Japanese a Chinese. You have the Esans, the Oras and their neighbours with dialectic similarities and distinctions. You have the Yorubas and Itsekiris. Ethnicity is about divergencies in history, lineage, migrations, heritage, politics , culture, cross culture, cross lineage and cross affiliations and distinct dialetic or linguistic forms formed over centuries to millennia. Thus an Efik is an Efik and not an Ibibio. You dont meet an Itsoko man or woman and insist he or she must be referred to as an Urhobo. It is an insult and an assault to his unique heritage. No one has the license to dictate any persons heritage or identity. It is highly narcissist and the act itself uncivilized. In clearer terms only a narcissistic Chinese will call a Japanese or korean a Chinese. They are appropriately referred in reference to accredited precepts as relatives. In such terms the Esan is a relative of the Ora, the Yoruba a relative of the Itsekiri, the scot a relative of the Irish and the Anglo(english), the Igbo is a relative of the Anioma, the Anioma himself a relative of the Igbanke and the matter is as simple as that.

I think that one of the biggest mistake that we continue to make is trying to write and broadcast news and other information in “central Igbo”. What in Gods name is that. When my children leave home and go to school, what they are being made to learn is not what we speak at home causing confusion. I can understand another Igbo person from any part of Nigeria in their own dialect. Central Igbo is an oxymoron. I believe we will be more united if we allow everyone to write and pass information in their own dialect and this will go a long way in helping Igbo parents pass the language to their children. We are making it hard to about learn from and talk with each other.

💔💥 That Anambra man telling you that you're not Igbo is ignorant. Other Igbos unfortunately experience same with them. Many people are ignorant of their history before the war.

Delta state is the indigenous home town of all igbo. Isu is from delta state and isu is the owner and teacher of igbo language. It’s after Ekumeku war was finally crushed by the British that the Edo and ijaw people corrupted Umejei Isu story to be a killer and with years people went along with the lies but it’s not true because they knew that isu is the head of Igbo and even Yoruba tribe.

My beautiful sister, don't mind anyone who try to make you feel less Igbo. Any Igbo person from south east who calls an Igbo person from either DELTA, RIVERS, AKWA IBOM, BENUE OR KOGI state a less Igbo person is an illiterate with a great degree of 'poverty of history'. A LITERATE Igbo person from the south east with a sense of history who understands that IGBO LANGUAGE has different DIALECT will never say so. I worked in Delta state for years precisely in Ndokwa east, Ndokwa west, and briefly in Ogwashiuku and i see nothing different between me and the people of those area. The people i discover that i have cultural difference with, are the Ijaws, Urhobos and the Ishetkiris. Whenever i am in the midst of the Igbo speaking areas of Delta state, i feel as if i am in south east. You are a true Igbo girl and dont let any illitrate make you feel otherwise.

I say and repeat:Nobody has any right to question your Igbo heritage. Igbo is Igbo. Anambra, Delta Imo etc can still change tomorrow when the politicians so wish. But your cultural language endures as long as you are on earth. There are also our sisters who deny their identity and address us as "these Igbo people". But am sure these things will change. My village man married from Delta, but it's Iseleukwu.

Thank you, Miss Ekwutosina. Typical Igbo girl. All the names you mentioned... Ekwy, akpu, ofe nsala, ofe akwu, Ekwutosina madu ibegi are Anambra names. I'm from Anambra state. Don't mind those boys, they're joking with you. Anambra, imo, Enugu, ebonyi, Abia they speak different igbo dialects like ika, anioma but they're one igbo.
First time I travelled from Onitsha to aba, the taxi driver was speaking ngwa to me. I couldn't understand him. It's one igbo different dialects.
