  • "Free canoe". That’s what it said on craigslist, so I drove an hour and picked it up. There’s usually a catch when something awesome is given away fro free, and it’s usually because it’s no longer any good to the person giving it away. This was the case for the previous owner, and I was the lucky recipient. I like a challenge, I have some skills, and I have vision. This is a Grumman Eagle 15 ft. square back canoe made to carry up to four people and handle a 5 hp motor. Used you can find them from $500-$1200 and new they are closer to $2000, so finding this one for free was awesome. The previous owner said "just slap a little fiberglass patch on there and it will be fine." I didn't agree. I chose a different route.
I use some body working tools like hammer and dolly set, electric grinder, a torch, and some other tools and products in this project, some of which you can find in the affiliate links below. I was even considering some paintless dent repair tools and techniques, but PDR wasn't really needed since there was easy access to both sides of the metal. The metal rip was sealed with a patch that was TIG welded on by a friend. Please help support the channel by subscribing to the channel, liking the video and sharing it on other relevant sites.

Excellent restoration of a badly mangled canoe. most people would have thought it a write off. So glad it found you. the professionally welded patches brought back the strength of the stressed aluminum shell. I learned a bit new watching this . thankyou , Ontario Canada

I just bought a 17' Grumman at a moving sale (for a mere $100!). Great shape, so no holes or anything more than a few dings to mess with. Just hoping to clean it up a bit and do whatever helps preserve its integrity. I've started rounding up paddles, life jackets, and such, plus watching CZcams lessons on good canoeing, ways to haul it, and so forth. Thanks for your contribution!

I have a 30yr old Grumman canoe with a couple of small dents. There is also a small leak from the bow area around the keel. Watching your video motivates me to fix my canoe myself! Thanks.

You said the magic word; vision. My thought has always been if we can place a spaceship in Mars certainly we can do so many things in this planet, all that's require is a little vision and the courage to tackle what lays before us.
    Gracias, for taking the time.

Thanks for your tips and repair. My 17’ Grumman was had a pine tree fall on it in a big wind storm. Ended up with a big old dent in the side of it. Might be able to use the tools to take most of it out But there is a pretty good crease also. Think I’ll need to get a professional for that part. It’s 50 yrs old and was in very good shape other than pealing paint and a few small dents. My kids n grandkids have enjoyed it too.

Great video thank you. It did the beer you played with the Sauter too much once it melt leave it. Every time you tap with the hammer afterwards you send little vibrations and opens up the crack again. Same thing with the grinder small vibration loosens up the bond between the original and the new aluminum you put together.

Raymond Cavanagh thanks for your views and comment. I tend to agree. At one point I just had to realize the tig was a better bond for structural rigidity. The braze was more suited for filling that gap.

I have just bought a Grumman canoe from my neighbour for £150. Got a couple of small dents on her, but I'm keeping those as battle scars. The boat has had very little time on the water, perhaps two or three dips in her 20 year + . I plan on making her wet on a more regular basis. I will give the Alu a good buff and treat the seams with some ACF50 oil. Perhaps spend some money on those creature comforts that make a day on the water a pleasure and not a grind. I'm looking forward to many adventures. Thanks for the informative video.

welding for 40 years and a bead like that! that man needs to rethink his career lol, flux was a good call with that brazing rod, but you need to get the material hotter, notice how the puddle rolled off? it should be flowing into the gaps for a solid bond, you will notice you will not need to apply as much

Next time try wiping the surface down with acetone first really good. Aluminum is porous. Running a brush over it first works contaminates into the alum. Just a suggestion.

Great video - though have you ever stopped and checked how many times, and why, you use the word "like"? It, like. holds four people. Like or does it? Backtrack and try to see how the overuse of the 'like'' word detracts from an otherwise good narrative.
Personally, like, it is so irritating.
