He was a high school legend in Los Angeles and wound up becoming equally dominant in college at Cal State Los Angeles, where he averaged over 35 points a game, which was absurd for that time. He became the youngest player ever drafted at the time. He was selected 18th overall by Philadelphia in the first round, and there was significant buzz around him. He was drafted low because he was so young, didn't finish college, and back then, it was considerably different than it is now with mindsets when it came to that. A lot of the teams were scared off by it and worried about his maturity. He participated in the team's rookie camp, where he was doing REALLY well for himself, outplaying Doug Collins who went on to become a 4-time NBA All Star and later became more famously known when he coached the Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. He was ultimately fired and replaced by Phil Jackson, which we all know what happened then. Anyhow, there was a contract dispute between Lewis and the team, and he walked out. Sixers coach Gene Shue suspended him for the year and told him to grow up. He tried to sign with the ABA but Philadelphia blocked it. He was invited back to the team in 1975 but after a few years off, wasn't the same. Didn't play as well, allegedly had an attitude and walked out again. The Sixers had enough and released him. He had a few tryouts in later years with the Knicks and Clippers, but never again made an NBA roster. He wound up becoming a street ball legend, but there are many who call Ray Lew the greatest that never was. Unfortunately, his story doesn't have a happy ending. He had a major battle with alcoholism. Never was able to fully overcome it. Wound up having a stroke and a leg amputitated. Spent the last month of his life in the hospital after the stroke and died. This was in 2001. So, while he technically never played in the NBA, dude was a legend for sure in basketball.
