  • In 1993 the US and the UN launched a joint mission to capture to top lieutenants of warlord Muhammad Farah Aidid. A mission that was meant to be simple and only last minutes turned out to be one of the worst disaster in US military history. The incident was so bad that to this day it affects US foreign policy and its interventions in any conflict

Somalia is the first country British empire used military planes fighting against Somali freedom fighters, after when British Empire ground forces were defeated by Somali freedom fighters. The British colonial master in Somalia brought all kinds of fighter from their colonial countries around the world to defeat Somalia freedom fighters and were not able. The military British Generals told their colonial government that they cannot defeat the Somali freedom fighter on ground forces by any means, except by air power. That is when British used areal bombardment against the Dervish (Somalia freedom fighter led by Sayid Mohamed Abdille Hassan).

The US made itself very unpopular in Somalia-flying helicopters over the central market (scattering the produce) made the vendors very unhappy. Plus shooting the elders council meeting up-it was almost as if Admiral Howe was trying to make enemies. At any rate, we walked into a trap-Aidid was NOWHERE near the site. So 18 American soldiers died for nothing. Aiudid was very observant-he realized if the US could be maneuvered into a place where the helicopters could be shot down, then the US force could be trapped-and the commanding general had NO plan B-we had to beg the Pakistanis and Malayans to borrow their APCs to effect a rescue. Moral: do NOT attack anybody with no "Plan B" (when everything goes wrong).

They also failed to mention that America drowned Somalia with American weapons. Somalia was already drowned with Soviet weapons. America also trained many Somali officers (who were already trained by the Soviets before Siad Barre turned on them) and those very same officers used their training against America unlike Saddam Hussein who had no military training at all. They dissolved the organised army and waged gorilla on each other and on America later on. So the whole (we are fighting a primitive enemy) was a lie to gain support from the American public. They knew that these officers had the training and the manpower to hurt American forces but they deliberately lied to Americans (being well trained doesn't they were good people). Btw, many of those officers are now living large at the expense of the American tax payer either by working for the federal government of Somalia which is funded by America or by providing services to the UN such as renting a houses they looted from others for 8k dollars a month for NGOs in Mogadishu.

Some key factors missing I won't say they were two powerful warlords in Somalia because they were other Rebel faction missing from your story. SNM in Somaliland and SSDF.As story goes you begin how the government collapsed and the American come in. SSDF was the first Rebel faction formed in Somalia which was a result of fail coup attempt that led to execution of highly military official. The regime was weakend by the 1977 Ethiopia war thus distrust of newly formed SSDF which later followed by SNM led to another faction which government never knew about UNC. You keep mentioning sub clan Habargidir but it was Union of Major clan Hawiye that formed the UNC which took over the Capital city. Things took different turn when the war turned into Darod vs Hawiye because of power struggle. Since the ousted president was from Darod clan and UNC captured the capital this led to full blow civil war because UNC retaliated against any Darod people and Vice versa . Thus it led to destruction and Mayhem because of lack of order. US used humanitarian grounds in order to capture the Capital and restore their own regime which backfired. The main reason that led to the defeat to US was close Urban Warfare and Psychological war. Even though they felt supreme they took UNC for granted by fighting their war game. They could not order airstrike in highly populated city and could not disguise who was civilian or Rebel. The major defeat which was like in Vietnam was appealing to American people. Images of Camel meat dressed as American soldiers eaten by Somali people and dead bodies dragged on the floor caught the media which brought swift action of withdrawal.

There were numerous American military campaigns where a country is given an ultimatum to depose their leadership (so that an American puppet government can be put into its place), or fight and risk suffering heavy losses on your people and infrastructure. The US initiated wars on multiple governments in Central America in the 80s, then Yugoslavia and Serbia, then Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, and numerous other countries across the globe. The United States is an empire that aggressively foments division within states before coming in to establish a foothold, usually for strategic reasons. It's all run by the wealthy and corrupt, who have total control of the media and can paint any event as a reason on which to spending 20 years and 5 trillion dollars. Most American people don't support any of this and they generally suffer because of it. The architects of these pits of human life and money should all be tried for crimes against humanity, but since we have a duplicitous court system and an overtly biased media, it won't as it stands.

They are only one tribe that Precident Mohamed Siyad peace and blessings be upon him trusted. To know who they were read Somali history from colonial era up to date both internally and externally. You may be surprised. Inshaa'Allaah Somalia will be great again and will be the lion of the world and islamic headquarter. May Allah protect Somalia, its people and religion.

Capturing the UN peacekeepers in Bosnia by the Bosnian Serbs instigated the very short NATO (US) aerial campaign two years later in 1995 during the Bosnian war.
Some would say that those bombings have saved us but it was actually the warfare ingenuity of our young men and women in jeans and sneakers to counter and defeat the 4th most greatest superpower in the world in those days; the Yugoslavia.
