Congrats on the KLR! I've had many MANY bikes over the last 25 years. Harley's, Ducati, Guzzis, V-Stroms, etc. Bought a Traveler edition a few months ago. Offered a great deal also because I got a Honda Ruckus for The Wife at the same time. I've been enjoying it so much I sold my '20 V-Strom 1050XT Adventure. The KLR just seems to do it all for me, so why have two? I'm done with all the 'go-fast' bikes and dragging knees around corners. Been there done that. I'm just into exploring and enjoying the road. Let the farkling begin!
Very good down to earth review! I've watched many videos comparing the KLR to motorcycles costing many thousands more and a lot of them do admit that the KLR is a nice pleasant capable bike. It sounds like it may be the perfect bike for those who want to enjoy the scenery and get out down the dusty trails and roads. Thank you.
Yes this bike will do everything I’m looking for. Comfortable on the back roads and comfortable getting to the back roads. May not be the “perfect bike” for a single style of road but so far it does every style of road extremely well.
I've got a '22 KLR and doing the same kind of riding you are on New England back roads. Very happy with the machine. I bought it because I couldn't get parts for my '13 Vstrom 650 due to post pandemic supply chain problems. The Vstrom was a bit smoother, but the KLR is a little better on rougher roads. Both are inexpensive fun bikes. A 3-D windshield riser, crash bars, and bark busters have been good aftermarket additions.
Yes, mine got crash bars right away and I’ll see from there what it needs next, but right now I’m loving riding this bike on the back roads. I can definitely see how the v-strom can be smoother than the single.
From my experience, stock tires on a dual sport or adventure bike, just aren’t aggressive enough for me to have full confidence off road. If I feel the bike getting a little hairy in a curve with thicker gravel, I accelerate. It’s worked for me. I stand up a lot on my bikes, but usually not in curves. That’s a MX habit, you tend to sit down in curves when racing.
Thanks for the review, the KLR is such a fun and capable bike. the best part about them is they can go anywhere and are very reliable, plus there is nothing even close to it in the price range. Dirt and gravel roads are what the KLR was made for, but they handle pavement surprisingly well and the fuel range is great. I traded my KTM adventure 790 for a '23 KLR traveler model and zero regrets, i simply have more fun on the KLR. stay safe and enjoy the ride.
I was in the same situation when I bought a 22 KLR, I watched a ton of videos on how to ride dirt and practiced a few times a week. Standing up really helps when you have some big bumps, I practiced doing figure 8s (standing up) in a gravel lot trying to get them tight. Get some crash bars at some point you will drop it, usually when going very slow and trying to turn around or something.
Yes, I’m loving this bike. I have been doing a lot of different types of roads and did get some crash bars as well, as I did get myself into a few questionable turn around situations. But so far this has been a great bike and a joy to ride. Thanks for watching!!
Hello my friend. Yes, we need to practice every day we can the important points of riding. Emergency braking, swirl, slow maneuvers, and clutch, this are the fundamental aspects. As you go, start changing terrains and nee challenges. KLR never dies. Capable of traveling the world and back without the bells and whistles. This us why I bought a 2nd Gen and getting prep to start the adventure of a lifetime.
Yes, the KLR is a great bike that seams to be at home doing a little bit of everything. I've been having a great time learning all the new terrain that I was not used to with street bikes. Good Luck on your adventure and thanks for watching!!

Just stumbled across your channel and subscribed. I bought a 23 adventure KLR in the spring and have 4,000 miles on so far I'll ride till snow here in WI. I have a Yamaha Royal Star and a V star tour to jump on and ride too. Similar stable here with the KLR and cruisers.

Great vid! Just got one myself and this is the most real vid pertaining to learning the Gen 3 KLR 650 capabilities. I agree that easing into it, being humble about it and keeping things safe is the best route. I'm in Arizona and there's a lot of sand, deep sand at times. Super sketchy! Looking to pick a 24 KLR Adventure up this coming week and all the videos Ive watched a lot were saying its such a heavy bike so I looked up the specs and it was only 452lbs and didnt think that was a very heavy bike. Ive owned dirt bikes as a kid, a crotch rocket, 1300 V Star and a 18 Harley Road Guide Special (now that was a heavy and top heavy bike!) and always wanted a dual sport so I might just pull the trigger. My Wife is gonna be pissed!! lol but on a side note, my daily driver is a 22 F450 and diesel around my area is 4.50+/gallon and she gets about 13mpg if I drive it 5 under any speed limit these KLR's are supposed to get 55mpg or so. Glad your enjoying it!
With the bikes you've had you'll think the KLR is light and nimble, and mine has always gotten around 53-57 MPG. You'll love it and they are so much fun!! Not the fastest bike, but one of the funnest!
I have a vulcan nomad. I love that bike. My buddy and i alot of traveling. He has riden dirt bike all his life. He goes wirh some guys up in the moutains of NC. I thought i would try my hand at this style of riding. I bought an 08 klr 650. I ha ent touched my vulcan all summer. I have really enjoyed riding it. One day we might get up to MN and ride all those roads yall have. Safe travels.
Congrats! I jist bought a leftover 2023 last week. Standard KLR, like yours, green! Already buying farkles to personalize it for northern MI. No 650 vstroms here either.
I find it so relaxing riding the klr. I ride the back roads forty five ish miles per hour and love it. Mine is the same model as yours. I added the kawi bags which I find handy, throw a camp chair and a thermos in and enjoy the day.
I have a Street Glide and a 2022 KLR. The KLR is the most comfortable. The stock tires are not good off road, even on gravel. Don't worry I only got 1400 miles out of the stock rear. I plan to tour the KLR over the SG. Much more room to move around and you can take the gravel when you like. 😅
I agree, this KLR is very comfortable. I do find myself thinking about longer trips more on this thing than I do on the my Road King. They’re all great bikes but this KLR is finding a special place in my garage. Thanks for watching!!

I think you are doing very well on the gravel. I have been riding ADV bikes for the past 5 years. I can remember how terrifying my first experiences were on gravel. Gravel still makes me nervous.

So far this bike is handling great. Good on gravel and the suspension makes pot holes and bad paved roads around town a non-factor! Good Luck on the Get 1. Not too much difference between the 1, 2 & 3.

Wow, sometimes I think you read my mind. I have been considering getting a KLR as a second motorcycle. I ride a 900lb Victory Vision. It can be a bit cumbersome riding around town here in Sioux Falls, so it would be a great daily rider and commuter, that could sub in a pinch for longer rides. I have a lot of friends that are farmers and require a distance off the pavement to get to them. Could you tell me which dealer you purchased from as there are none available out here. By the way, you did great on the dirt. Those are 50/50 tires and they bite well. I also know people that tour thousands of miles on these KLR's and they are generally capable of most interstate speeds, but 65mph is a sweet speed for them. Great motorcycle for secondary routes. As far as weight is concerned, most people who complain about it do not have much experience on large touring bikes and cruisers. For me under 500lbs is a vacation!
I would fully recommend one of these for a second bike!! Or a first bike if you don’t mind a single thumper all the time. This to me, coming from a touring/cruiser bike background, feels extremely light and nimble. I purchased this one from Motor Sports Of Willmar.

You will probably need to change the infamous "doohickey" before anything else. Another CZcamsr Spite's Corner, has this bike and talks about having to change it at about 5k miles, if I remember right. But overall good choice from everything I've read about these.
I checked my first gen (2007 model year) right after I purchased it in 2019. The doohickey split in half when I loosened the bolt. Maybe someone just overtightened it? It worried me enough I bought the eagle mike replacement instead of stock. If you replace it, get the torsion spring too. It won’t wear out and fall off like the stock one does (mine was sitting on the bottom of the case. It was an old bike though). I’m really interested in the third gen. Hope you enjoy it!

I think that all depends on the rider. I’m comfortable at 30-45 MPH, depending on the gravel. KLR handles the gravel just fine but I'm new to it. I have more of a street riding background.
I’ve done 80 on hard packed desert dirt and gravel. Felt decent at 60 so I cranked it for a moment. My 2006 handled it just fine! 30-45mph is great on most smooth hard gravel
1300 miles on my 23 kle 650, I live in Kansas gravel roads, still on stock tires, aired at 20 psi, it's a little shaky on really loose gravel, I do 60 to 70 mph comfortably on a regular basis, you just have to get used to that loose feeling. My roads are mostly straight. Also went to the 16 tooth front sprocket, that cut down on that high end vibration enough that I can use my mirrors, the speedo reads the same as my GPS, and to me me is all around a more comfortable ride.

I have a the 22 adventure klr and I maxed it out with after market Goody's and I took it from Eliz nj to Athens ga down and back with no problems
I’m from central Minnesota also… get armor protection all the way around, and yes you can accessorize the crap out of it, I absolutely love mine.

I've had my 22 KLR 650 traveler for over a year now. I've ridden all winter in the mid west. Get some heated grips and extend your riding season.
Yes, I think this bike will extend the riding season, but it will still get put away when the roads get icy.

Go hard into every corner, each one harder than the last, if/when you go over, back off youve found your limit.
I guess that would be the most direct way to find the limits.
The CBX is Sick had one with the six into one and a super trap tunable exhaust. Insane but a straight line bike as it's a dog in handling

That is in the plans, but not touching it until the warranty is up. Easy peace of mind just to have it done.
Kawasaki would not leave a flaw in a motor for 30 years. Your doohikey is fine, don't believe the hype 😂.

Yes, you can add or change just about anything you need to fit you needs.

I do not want to give that info out to keep a good relationship with the dealership in case I need them again in the future. Sorry about that. But there are some good deals right now if you live in an area where the weather is changing and the riding season is coming to an end.
What speed is the Klr comfortable at on the gravel ?
I think that all depends on the rider. I’m comfortable at 30-45 MPH, depending on the gravel. KLR handles the gravel just fine but I'm new to it. I have more of a street riding background.
I’ve done 80 on hard packed desert dirt and gravel. Felt decent at 60 so I cranked it for a moment. My 2006 handled it just fine! 30-45mph is great on most smooth hard gravel
1300 miles on my 23 kle 650, I live in Kansas gravel roads, still on stock tires, aired at 20 psi, it's a little shaky on really loose gravel, I do 60 to 70 mph comfortably on a regular basis, you just have to get used to that loose feeling. My roads are mostly straight. Also went to the 16 tooth front sprocket, that cut down on that high end vibration enough that I can use my mirrors, the speedo reads the same as my GPS, and to me me is all around a more comfortable ride.

Hahahah The KLR is an antiquated piece of shit. Every time I go out for a ride on mine something else goes wrong. Get rid of that piece of shit before it leaves you stranded
