  • It's time to learn about microorganisms! These are all the tiny little critters in the water, and the air, and in the ground, and inside you. We didn't even know they were there until a few hundred years ago, but once we started to learn about them, we started to figure out a lot of things about disease. Namely, that lots of diseases are caused by certain varieties of microorganisms, which we call pathogens. In this series we will set up some basic concepts in microbiology, and then we will go through a long list of pathogens, one by one, to learn about what diseases they cause, how they do it, and the methods we've developed to combat them!

    Thank you soooo much for creating free content for medical students. Many students like me can not afford even low membership fees of websites that have been designed for medical students and your channel is one of the most precious resources for us♥♥♥🙏

    why do you call the 4th category of microorganisms "parasites"? aren't desease causing fungi, bacteria and viruses also parasitic?

    • @swarmofbees3114

      Possible confusion between parasites and protists?

    • @Kammerliteratur
      @Kammerliteratur Před 2 měsíci

      @@swarmofbees3114 parasitism is a relationship, an interaction between organisms, it does not specify which kind of organisms are involved. there are parasitic viruses, procaryotes, protists, fungi, animals and even plants. unfortunately, in zoology, the word "parasites" is used only for parasitic protists and animals, and only for those parasitising on animals. incorrectly, if you ask me. in mycology or botany, parasite can instead mean every organism that lives parasitic. as it should be, tbh.
