    I think explaining in more detail that bussing is sending all the audio to another track and send is sending a copy of the audio to another track would've helped..

    I think some people posting misunderstand you Sean. sends. It goes like this, the send is what you use to select another source to send to, for example a buss, the buss routes the signal to the auxiliary channel which is a different type of channel strip in the digital mixing window when working in the digital audio workstation. The auxiliary channel gives auxiliary support to the original audio or instrument tracks. You can put effects on the auxiliary tracks to support the main channel without overloading the main channel with effects processing. They are also lighter on processing cpu. They also benefit from adding more warmth to the perceived audio signal. It feels like it gives a little bit of a boost to the vocals or instrument parts that need to be in the front of the mix. You don’t need to buss everything to aux channels. They are just another tool to help in balancing a good mix and can be used in different ways. Thanks for the video Sean.

    So aux vs. bus boils down to this:
    You use a bus to send to an aux.
    You use Bus A to send to Aux 1 and Bus B to send to Aux 2.
    Any channel set to Bus A will be sent to Aux 1 (reverb, for example)....
    ... and any channel sent to Bus B will be sent to Aux 2 (compression, for example)

    A bus is just a channel whos input is the bus number. You can route tracks’ output to that bus channel and all audio will go there. A send lets you send some of the audio to the bus, pre or post fader. Now does pre-fader also include the inserts?? There’s also VCA’s... VCA’s are channels that you route your tracks to and it includes all the sends to busses. So when you solo a VCA it will also solo all the sends and include those.

    Makes no sense to me.. yet. I still don’t get the actual breakdown of how it works. So say I record multiple vocal tracks... If I’m going to use same exact effects on them.. I route those to a BUS track. That way I save CPU usage and effects only need to be applied once correct? Instead of individually applying an effect racks right? Then what is the use of a send? And what’s an AUX? I’m confused, if someone can break it down in more simple terms that would be great. Also can someone break down what is side chaining?

    Thanks for the video tutorial a little hard to understand. However however are you basically saying that each bus is where we should put effects including, having reverb in one bus, delay in another bus and so on? I’ve been using GarageBand iOS for eight years but I’m also recently starting to use logic which is a lot more complex or seems to be. I understand that mixing including planning, volume et cetera is different to mastering. I believe mastering, is what makes the project sound crystal clear and I’m very interested and keen to know shortcuts as I predominately record multitrack building them up myself including creating my own drum, bass and other patterns.

Sounds stupid, but if you solo an aux track, other tracks are muted including ones that have signal going to that aux. You can than solo those tracks as well, but what if I want to hear only the effect on the aux. Is there any faster and more convinient way, rather than changing your send to pre fader and pulling the faders down on original tracks? This has been driving me crazy.

When you set up an effects aux like reverb, and you select a bus to route the channel you want reverb on like vocals to aux channel. How come the bus knob that's on the vocal channel if you turn it up it turns up the vocals and make them louder? How can you use more reverb without turning vocals up louder ?

    • @leighallannewton
      @leighallannewton Pƙed 3 lety +1

      You certainly can do that but you are going to use more of your CPU ability, and you may run of out of processing power.

    • @anthonymetcalf660
      @anthonymetcalf660 Pƙed 2 lety

      You do want to process each one separately. You start the mix that way. If you have an analog board or a nice computer you can route the tracks to their busses, aux tracks, and master all at once. Otherwise you will probably want to record each of the tracks with the effects on them, all at once (so you can hear the mix), then do the same thing for the next stage of the mix down. To be honest though that kind of sucks, but it’s possible.
      You route the tracks to busses so that you can process multiple tracks together. It’s part of the mixdown process and it should come right after each track is processed individually. For instance, you might want to process each drum microphone individually, then process them together by blending them into a bus and adding some subtle compression/EQ on the bus or something to glue the sound together so they don’t sound like they were processed separately, it’s also a good point to add reverb because the reverb, either natural or synthesized, reacts to the overall sound being fed to it, so it would sound different if you put it on each individual tracks than if you put it on a drum bus, and since natural reverb is is responding to the sound of the entire instrument, it often sounds better to put it on a bus.
      Busses actually come from analog circuitry. They basically serve the same function as aux tracks in most DAWs except that they can help a LOT with workflow especially when you have that nice computer and you can play all your tracks and busses with FX at once so you can adjust your mix from bottom to top while listening. Busses simplify that situation and will reduce CPU usage but if you are doing it one stage at a time and recording the FX into aux tracks then you may not need them.

    @XtineMark Pƙed 2 lety

    Hi, thanks for this vid. Question: I notice that by default a new aux track (say where you might put your reverb FX) has an output of STEREO OUT. Does this mean that the signal gets sent to the aux track and then that signal goes right to stereo out? Or does the Stereo Out part of an aux track get ignored if the incoming signal came via send? To take that a step further, is it true that if the incoming signal to an aux track came in via send then when it's done processing in that aux track does the signal go BACK to the original audio track where it might get sent off to another bus via a different send? Does my question make sense?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  Pƙed 2 lety

      I think you may be overcomplicating it :) By default, your sends go down to the aux for processing and then the AUX OUTPUT goes to the stereo out (master bus). You can of course route the aux output wherever you want. Hope that helps!

    • @XtineMark
      @XtineMark Pƙed 2 lety

      @@SeanDivine lol. I'm ace at overcomplicating things. I guess what I don't understand if I have an audio track that has no local FX on the FX chain, has two sends, and where the output is set to stereo out, then is the signal that gets goes out on the second send the raw audio from the track? Or is it the raw audio from the track plus whatever processing happened with the first send? ... Related, in the scenario above, are there three signals getting merged and mixed into the master bus (#1 send->stereo out, #2 send-> stereo out, #3 raw audio->stereo out)? Please let me know if this is involved for YT comments, let me know if a quick call (with you on the clock) makes more sense.... not trying to be a freeloader. buses are used to add effects to a or control volume on a single or group of tracks. it's important to note that busses will apply effects on top of whatever effects you already have on the tracks.
    sends on the other hand allow you to apply an effect to a single track.
    bus= effects to lots of tracks for better control
    send= effects to one track .. so it doesn't fuck up the rest ☠
