Rusty and Burned 1950's Doepke Fire Truck Restoration

- Hey everyone and welcome back to another restoration! In today's video I tackle a classic 1950's Doepke pumper. Doepke was a short lived toy company that made some amazingly detailed toys throughout the lates 40's and early 50's and this American Lafrance is no exception. Doepke licensed the toy right from American Lafrance meaning it is authentic to the real deal. It even has Goodyear tires!
This restoration was as the truck had unfortunately been badly burned in a house fire. The few plastic parts that remained were melted beyond recognition and all bright work had turned black. Fortunately with plenty of cleaning, buffing, and 3D printing I was able to bring it back to its former glory! I opted to used spray paint over powder coating for the main body as the body panels were a tight fit and could only reassemble with a thin coating. This made reassembly extra challenging as the paint was prone to chipping. Overall I have to say this is my favorite project so far!

Now you see why things were built so much better back in the day, just by watching you disassemble with all those parts. Now a day’s it’s 3 or 4 screws and a couple of plastic clips. Great job brother
Having grown up in Elmira NY where they manufactured American LaFrance fire trucks. This restore project is very cool. Very nice piece
This is a great project !! Today’s toys vehicles and items are made of nothing at all but plastic !! These very old ones are made of STEEL !! These antique pieces last so much longer than the new ones do !! Thank you 🙏📚📖🚒 !!
You did a great job! I'm happy to see this fire truck is ready to be played with once again.
Thanks! Our may need to team up and put out a doll house fire!
@@joe_diy OMG!!! Thank you so much for restoring that toy. It is an American LaFrance series 800 pumper truck. I drove one of those, for real, for 11 years. If it had been scaled out, that would've been the 200 gallon water tank version. Mine had a 750 gallon water tank, so it was longer than your run of the mill 800's. The sound of that V-12 engine, the air siren-it gets in your blood and never goes away.
@@The_Dudester Awesome story and history! Never knew much about the old pumpers but a lot of people have been psoting various facts! Doepke makes a ladder truck version as well
@@joe_diy I always wanted the Doepke models, but when they were available money was tight. Buddy L also makes an awesome series 900.
The pickup truck you restored earlier, a family that adopted me not only owned that model of truck, they gave me the toy version and I played with it until the wheels fell off. No one restored toys back then and I am sorry to say it ended up in the city dump.
@@The_Dudester Are you talking about the older fire Engines that required a firefighter on the back end to steer the rear of the truck?
That was one of the best engineered and designed toys i've ever seen, someone put their heart in making that fire truck
So True
The complex assembly of old toy trucks is amazing. Nothing like that today.
That toy would win in a crash with most modern sedans....
@@jaystarsky7271 hes talking about the toy, the complexity of it you simpleton
‼ WOW EXCELLENT JOB......‼ 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
So gratifying to watch! Patience, detailed and the right tools!
Let's face it. ANYONE can take stuff apart. Hell, even I can. The talent, skills & knowledge to know what to with it after it's disassembled, is what really matters. If that was me, I'd have parts left over. Your ability to bring things "back to life" is absolutely amazing. Keep being you.
Beautiful! Love seeing these vintage toys brought back to life.
Ironic perhaps. A restored fire truck that survived a fire. Excellent job.
I had this very same toy firetruck in 1957. Just awesome to see it restored like that thank you.
Good morning Greg. Did the pump actually spray water?
It's remarkable how once upon a time in America, this much quality of workmanship and attention to detail went into even a little kid's toy like this. They were made here in the States and the people who worked in the factories could live on what they earned, and there were no suicide nets on top of the buildings.
Great job. Interesting toy.
you did a great job restoring the fire truck.
The detail and craftsmanship back in the day was ridiculous.
The crap from China is ridiculuos.
I once had a similar toy 51yrs ago by Tonka, as I grew into adolescence, I ended up tossing it into the pond behind my house, during a dry spell 3yrs ago that truck revealed itself again & I retrieved it, even though it was to far gone to save, it actually made me think, of how much I loved it as a kid, & wished I hadn't done such stupid thing!
At least now I have a real truck...lol
Made to last
@@markboyle9769 for sure mark, I dont think my real truck would last that long... Lol
'RIDICULOUS!?' A really poor choice of word, don't you think?
old toys looks more fun than new ones
CZcams's algorithm made this video pop up in my feed. I'm really happy I watched it. Well done, sir!
I'm glad you watched it too! welcome to the channel!
Dung Trumpet Never ceases to amaze me how I can be watching “Andes Goat Herding” one minute, then here the next. And you don’t know how you got to either place lol!
amazing restoration
Fantastic you are so clever and dedicated and patient ,you bring new life to all the broken toys
Thanks for saving a piece of history.
Very nice work.
This is fantastic. Now it just needs a firestation to call home.
The original quality of the steel used in this toy really comes across in your wonderful restoration well done
I was thinking the same thing it looks very sturdy
This fire truck is amazing.
Nice to see the old girl back in service. Great job.
Beautiful restoration.
Awesome job, 9/10
Nice work.
IT SURE WOULD LOOK GOOD IN MY FIRE TRUCK COLLECTION
I remember seeing a bright red fire engine in the 60's when I was a child. It was at a small substation in Indianapolis. Your restoration reminded me of that fire truck. Your attention to detail is greatly appreciated. Thank you for making this video.
Super job on restoration of this firetruck. I love firetrucks old and new, but old always has so much more character. Thank you for sharing.
Looks like a classic fire engine….
Great video, terrific restoration
Nice restoration, although I must admit I loved the original distressed patina.
I think like is necessary to everyone who saw this video and recollected childhood memories
That lock is like a little hidden treasure! 👑💎🔐
Dude has everything, a 3D printer, an awesome Chevy Nova.
Yeah, I saw that Nova in the background.. SHWEEET!!!!!!!
What a great looking fire engine!!!
Nice collector piece now!
Congratulations for your patience. I don't have any. This toy is also my favourite. There's a lot of engineering in this truck, respect to Doepke brothers!
What is so fascinating about sand blasting? It’s always my favorite part.
It's ASMR.
Nice work,we don't see this kind of toys, that often, many of the companies that used to make this, disappear.this are like treasures, and very rare.👏👍👍
This toy was very well made
Love seeing these remarkable toys restored! Well done!
What a beautiful job.
Awesome as new again! What an beauty!
That fire truck came out incredible
Beautiful work . Im such a fan of Fire engines since i was a child growing up.. This is a masterpiece you restored. Love your work. ☺🚨
great job on that old ALF it's a beautiful 🚒
This restoration was a real labour of love. I couldn't believe the attention to detail this manufacturer went into for a toy of that period! Today's manufacturers would be hard pressed putting out such quality in their toys. You really went all out, this resto is no less than a work of art in my opinion. Just magnificent.
Very nice job. Really like that the color is a true rich red.
Good to see you didn’t take hose rolling up tips from R&R. Strong work!
1bennyfred
That really bugged me , after all that hard work!
What did R&R do ?
Cheryl Hartwig After performing an amazing restore on a similar fire truck, he topped it off by wadding the hose around the spool like a madman. Much love to R&R, but the hose roll was weird. He’s a flawed hero.
Thats so sweet along with the chevy II in the background..
... and an original Beetle.
Beautiful job well done
Bravo. Very nicely done. Encore, encore.
What if someone was looking for that padlock LOL!! 60 plus years! Great hiding place!!
Beautiful restoration on the Fire Truck, saved from the ashes of a real fire and brought back to its former glory 👍
You do such a great job on every one you do . But I think this one is my favorite. Awesome job . Thank you for sharing
GORGEOUS!!! All it needs now is a fan siren up front and a red 'bubblegum' rotator on top!
Fantastic restoration
What a cool toy! Great job!
Love classic firetrucks- beautiful restoration !
What a good quality madenfire truck. Back in the days they realy know what they were doing. Thanks for showing us this restoration man i enjoied every minute of it😎
Great save.
Beautiful! I love those old tintoys, it must realy had been an awsome toy to play with as a kid back in the 50s. :)
OMX, marring your pretty paint job with those piers was _killing_ me!
Awesome restoration job !!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite restoration so far! What a cute fire truck! Very well made.
Rusty and burned?! I think a little boy took fire truck too literal! Thanks for sharing your work.😎
A beautiful finish
Wow! Wonderful!
Beautiful job
Now that was a labor of love for this old toy that deserves a special spot on the display shelf. Very well done and very well presented. I especially liked that you didn't tear it all the way down to individual little pieces. This truck stood just fine without tearing the fenders off, the bottom off, ect.. Thanks for sharing this video with me.
Great looking!
Beautiful truck
What an amazing toy! So worthy of restoration. Great work!
A firetruck toy that got burnt in fire surely cannot put out fire even after restoration. :DDD
Wow! Looks better than new!😎👍
Very nice but a tip I've seen from others: Wrap your plier tips with masking tape to prevent marring painted finishes.
Very good tip, 👍
That was a very difficult part to watch.
Beautiful!!!
Absolutely Beautiful Restoration Job. I’m hoping to buy that same fire truck and restore it some day.
Unbelievable! Great job!
It's amazing to see a burned fire truck restored.
Wonderful work !!! Great Fire truck !
Awesome job on an old toy. Great work enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing.
The best video of Chanel !!!Amazing !!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
"Burned fire truck", man that's some realistic play! I had a rubber saw as a toddler, but I figured out it would cut an outside corner of the drywall
Super restro job. 😎👍👍👍
Wow beautiful colour and very good job amazing have a nice day dear sir
I couldn't believe the tool marks you left on the wheel retainer!!! Nice restoration.
Excellent! I love just watching the process without constant babble or cheesy music. Great job!!
Looks like an old American LaFrance, my home town had some for a long time. You could hear the Detroit screaming from blocks away. Great restoration!
Watching you fight with those compression washers, reminded me of a great tool I’ve used. Its basically a pair of needle-nose pliers, but the bottom jaw is a thin fork (a “V”). Aircraft mechanics use them for something, but they are perfect for removing those washers. It was thinking how nice it would look to paint the caps and control wheels on the side pump panel shiny silver (paint pen). Just a beautiful job, on a nice classic toy, thanks for sharing !
Came out very nice!
Such well made toys. Beautiful restore.
Nice old Truck🚒
Wrap your pliers in electrical tape before bending. Really helps save that paint you worked hard on
The Thurber Lane fire station; didn't go through a makeover just as yet, not until 2002.
Brilliant job 👍
Its Beautiful! Nice job!
Very nice restoration....my favorite part is the effort and creativity that goes into the fabrication of replacement parts. Thanks.
