  • Hey guys! It's ‪@RevisionWithEve‬ here! So many people tell me they're worried about learning a language because they 'don't know anything' - that couldn't be further from the truth!

    English isn't a language, it is 3 languages on top of each other wearing a trench coat

    I love how in englisch the plural of doppelgänger is doppelgängers and not just doppelgänger. It always freaks me out.
    Same with Poltergeists instead of Poltergeister.

    As someone who's been learning german for a while now, I'm laughing at how I never realized some of these words were German xd

    Love how Eve uses “beer garden” to describe a garden and not just you know the actual garden outside your house 👀🍻😂 (perhaps it’s called a lawn in England tho!!)

    Btw we say Rucksack in German too, without the ü it’s basically the direct translation to backpack

    Funny enough, we don't really say "Wanderlust" in German but "Fernweh" :p

    Tbh Wanderlust is not really used in germany, you would rather say “Fernweh“ (literally distance pain/ache), the desire to be somewhere else

    • @Anne-id2zt
      @Anne-id2zt Před 4 lety +2

      I still use Wanderlust when I want to convince my friends to a hiking trip on the weekend.
      But I love puns, and that's why I use it.

    Also the two of Santa's reindeers are called Donder and Blitzen which are the words for thunder and lightening in German. That's also where the German word for Thursday comes from "Donnerstag" which means thunder day (roughly translated). This also gives the English name to Thursday - which is "Thor's day" in old English. As Thor was the Norse God of thunder and lightning, this is where the German word comes from.

    As a native German speaker you’re here like: Oh, I didn’t realise these were used in English; I know more English than I thought😄. (And not realising this the other way around, in the way the video is aiming to)

    Do you have any tips for avoiding a language plateau? I don’t know if you’ve ever had this but I feel like I know quite a bit of French and Spanish (I studied them for A level) but I feel stuck like I can’t make huge leaps in language learning anymore and I can’t make good progress to my goal of fluency... Love your videos 💜

      Not Eve, but I would recommend chatting to a native speaker!

    • @ambertasniem7245
      @ambertasniem7245 Před 4 lety +1

      Hey, also not Eve but I have a couple of tips:
      1. Watch as much TV and films in your target language as you can! You can start off with subtitles in you native language, switch to subtitles in the target language and then without subtitles entirely. It’s super satisfying to finally realise how much you’ve progressed when you understand almost everything!
      2. Try to travel to a place where the language is spoken, if possible for a month or longer (when it’s safe again, of course). It’s amazing how fast you’ll progress when you finally have the opportunity to practice the language daily, and in my experience everything just kind of ‘clicks’ and you speak a lot more fluently.
      Hope this helps!

    • @carlabottazzi
      @carlabottazzi Před 4 lety

      At first you only notice the things you're able to say and as you get more fluent you start to only notice the mistakes. That plateau might only be in your mind! I'd also recommend watching tons of yt videos and series, etc. in the language you want to learn. Mucho ánimo con el español! :)
