- My drum cover version of the track 'Some Like It Hot' by the 80s supergroup 'The Power Station.' Tony Thompson was such an awesome drummer. One of the best drummers in the business.
The song that was playing at the beginning of the video, is actually one of my original tracks. The song is called 'Trouble' you can find it on Spotify, Itunes, and there's a music video for it on CZcams as well.

Tony Thompson would be proud
You made an old man smile. Tony Thompson would be proud. The syncopated quarter notes on the high hat are awesome. Thank you for your hard work on learning this beat.
Thanks mate. I’m glad you enjoyed my drumming and the high hat work, it means a lot! :)
Tony Thompson would be proud watching from above 💯
Thanks man! Really appreciate it :)
you have chosen an extremely good artist to emulate.
Gotta listen to this every morning. Then I have to force myself to quit, or else I'd keep listening to this over and over all day!
Haha nice man! 😝 I’m glad you really dig it!
Man, this is by far the best cover of this song. Tony has been gone for a long time and they're not much footage of his drumming. Thanks for transcribing this song! People can see how amazing Tony was, I love the double pedal triplets! Great drumming Sir!
Our local radio station played this. I immediately found it on youtube. WOW!
Sweet man! Thanks
Though not perfect, perfect, it perfectly describes to others my reason for liking the song. Nice job my drummer brother. Don't ever quit.
Thanks mate 👍🏽 I don’t think any cover is perfect haha, to be honest. But I’m glad you enjoyed it.. cheers 🍻
Beatiful
Bravissimo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👏👏👏👏
Rock solid…did Tony justice
Tony Thompson would be extremely proud!!!!!
Thanks man!! :)
@@marlonmcdonaldproject600 Marlon, who is your favorite drummer and why?
@@thecadikingpin8527 I’ve got a few favourite drummers, my taste has changed a bit over the years.. drummer wise. Back in high school my favourite drummer was John Bonham and AVH.. then in my early 20s, Randy Castillo was the guy that I really looked up to and still do, I took a lot from his style. But in the past few years my 2 favourite drummers that I’ve been really admiring is Tony Thompson and Aynsley Dunbar, because I love their power, the big sound, how tight they are when they play, the dynamics ect.. those two guys have got it. I’ve been listening to Thompson and Dunbar for over a decade now, but I admire them now more than ever! I’ll name a few other drummers that I’ve also looked up to as well.. Wild Mick Brown, Gil Moore, Deen Castronovo, Marc Droubay
@@marlonmcdonaldproject600 have you checked out any of Bev Bevans work with E.L.O and when he filled in with Black Sabbath? Check out his work on the track Fire on High...you won't be disappointed

I just realized Tony was part of the magical trio with Bernard and Niles. This piece looks complicated - thanks for posting.
Yeah that’s it, he was in Chic with Bernard and Niles.. and then later on he teamed up John Taylor & Andy Taylor from Duran Duran, and Robert Palmer to form The Power Station. And Bernard was the producer 👌🏽 thanks man!
Wow... really a lot of energy. A true POWER STATION performance. Awesome!

Ayo Marlon! One day ill be a good supporter and keep up with your uploads lol! Good stuff man.
Mr Chris Drums Thanks Chris! Haha no worries man it’s all good :) hope you’ve been well in these crazy times 👍🏽
Marlon I bought this albumn in 1986 and I still own it on vinyl. Of course I loved the way Tony Thomas from Chic attacked the drums on this one. I still love this song to this day and it was great to see you have a go at it !
Yeah sweet! The Power Station is one of my all time favourite albums 🙌🏽 and Tony Thompson still to this day.. one of the most powerful and tight drummers ever. I wasn’t even alive in 1985 haha but my dad introduced me to The Power Station years ago and said he played the whole album multiple times at his 21st birthday back in 1985. My main focus on this cover was to capture that big sound that a lot of people miss, and to keep it sharp and tight. Glad you enjoyed it, thanks 🙏🏽 😎
@@marlonmcdonaldproject600 👍

excellent drumming dude
Thanks bro!
You kick ass dude 🤘
Thanks bro 🤘🏽
@@marlonmcdonaldproject600 hey no problem
I wish that I had a place to practice my drumming!
You're so right, me too, just finding a place to play loud is a major challenge
@@SXI96: Drums can *only* be played loudly. If they're not loud, something's wrong. ;-)
I think the original was reverse gated. Good job
Thanks bro 👍🏽
Así se toca La Bateria..!!!
👍
Tony !!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
They used to say that Tony beat the drums like they owed him money. Guy did drum work for everyone from Chic to Diana Ross to David Bowie. The big drum intro to Some Like it Hot was actually inspired by the drum intro to Diana Ross' I'm Coming Out.
Yeah that’s right 👍🏽 I saw a recent John Taylor interview and he said the same thing, he said ‘Some Like It Hot’ was very similar to ‘I’m Coming Out’ but on steroids! Haha. And yeah I also really like Tony’s drumming on the ‘Let’s Dance’ album.. Bowie 👌🏽
I like how it is more complicated than it seems. Good job.
Absolutely man, exactly right. there’s actually quite a lot going on and a lot of people don’t realise it especially with this style of heavy rock drumming. Cheers man 👊🏽
@@marlonmcdonaldproject600 there is a lot of overdubbing and effects on the drums but the basic beat is fun to play. Tony was the best!!
@@skater2421 Definitely, you are right there are some overdubbing effects going on.. but even with the basic beat you still need to play it with very tight precision and keep it very solid, it can’t sound sloppy when you play Power Station songs or it will sound crap haha 👍🏽😎
@@marlonmcdonaldproject600 Which is why i believe Tony Thompson was such a great drummer. Its harder to keep a beat like that then to just crash and bang like Grohl does who, in my opinion, is a horrible drummer
@@skater2421 I agree, Tony was incredible! 👊🏽
I think Grohl is not a bad drummer but if you’re comparing him to a lot of drummers back in the 60s, 70s and 80s, like Tony, Aynsley Dunbar, Bonham, Alex Van Halen ect.. he’s no where near in the same league. So yeah, I do like Grohl as a person and a musician but he’s definitely overrated as a drummer
Great job Marlon. You captured Tony's sound and style.Tony was pure power funk. That snare is it exactly. What snare is that?
Thanks so much Court. The snare is Ludwig 👍🏽 but yeah I’ve always loved Tony’s big snare & kick sound, and how tight his playing was
great cover
🙃
That hi hat rule
Wish I knew how to do that
nicely done! only thing I'd pick on is the 16th notes on the chorus on the original have some accents, mainly on the 'and" of the beat, to give it a little extra funk. but you nailed it for the most part and you have a hell of a bass drum foot. keep rockin'
Thanks man! Yeah definitely, you are right. I play the highhat a little differently to the original in the chorus haha. The thing I was mainly focusing on was nailing the big sound, and just trying to be as tight as possible because Tony was tight as sh#t 😄👌🏽 thanks again!
Could you do. Catch me I'm falling by "Real life"
Decent. Tony used both snare lower Tom together in some places in song to give more impact.
Thanks Steve. Yeah true, I think there was one or two parts where I did hit the floor tom with the snare, but there’s probably a couple I missed as well.. too busy trying to stick to the groove and keep it tight haha.
@@marlonmcdonaldproject600 awesome skills you have. Keep it up
@@steveyoung2317 Thanks man
Power station. I have to say a?great concept. Driving lower bass, bombastic drumlime, heavy guitar . f ing awesome. Wish more. But Tony and Robert are no more with us
@@steveyoung2317 Yeah it was such a unique style! it’s like dance pop mixed with heavy drums & hard rock guitar.. and a bit of funk combined. I think that kind of style would still be relevant to nowadays, like it doesn’t sound dated or anything.
I’m thinking of writing some of my own songs in that style with that drum sound. I’ve already got 5 originals on Spotify, iTunes and music videos for them on CZcams.. but it’s more of an 80s hard rock/metal style, like Van Halen, Dokken ect..
Wrench take out the power station!
Hi level
do u do any rush tunes?
I’ve never been a Rush fan to tell you the truth, just never got into their music.
Tony was a single pedal guy…
I know..
Dude! Fuckin DUDE! That blew my mind! You got the gift!
Thanks BRO! Means a lot 😊🤟🏽
@mcdonaldproject600 thank YOU bro, you did the hard work, all I had to do was sit back and enjoy!
