  • Iceland is the largest volcanic island on earth and the most sparsely populated country in Europe. At the end of a lonely valley lives the family of Arna Bjarnadóttir and Denni Karlsson with their three children. The distances to the shops are long and often impassable in winter. The family supplies itself largely with local products. This requires wise stockpiling of the things that thrive in the short summer near the Arctic Circle. The family grows and stores potatoes and rhubarb - the rhubarb frozen, the potatoes in a peat house that protects against frost.

In 2007, Arna and Denni renovated an abandoned farm. Arna's son Bjarni was just one year old at the time when his mother and Denni turned their backs on their old life. Arna is a historian and has worked as a cultural manager in the capital Reykjavík, Denni as a film director. He grew up in the valley where the family opposes the general rural exodus.
In summer, Arna occasionally cooks for holiday guests; in winter, there is time to reinterpret traditional dishes. Fish and mutton are the cornerstones of Icelandic cuisine. The sea, rivers and lakes provide fresh fish even in winter. In the past, fish was considered a simple food, but today it has gained in esteem and is prepared creatively.
Sheep farming is a tradition in Iceland, and sheep are also a source of meat. The custom of using everything from one animal has survived. Today, this is still served once a year: at the 'Thorrablót', a festival celebrating midwinter - in the hope that the long winter will soon come to an end.

Dear WocomoCook crew, thank you very much for this new series. I was a big fan of the other one 'what's cooking', they were truly excellent and I loved travelling around European countries, and getting to know the people and traditions with you. I'm looking forward for this one 🥰

Thank you so much for your kind words! Actually, "At our Neighbour's Table" is basically the same series as "What's cooking". The producers changed the name. We will release a new episode every Monday ;)

Very top class story telling, camera work and sound. Loved seeing and hearing about life in the valley. Wonderful family. From an older woman living near the South Pole in New Zealand. I just do armchair travel now.

Must be another planet, you couldn't leave the ice drill/auger where I live, it would be stolen .

  • @ullo-ragnartelliskivi4639

i always find it smoewhat annoying when people simplify things like - we cure mutton and eat it carpaccio. curing meat has been done around the planet everywhere, not only in italy and spain. remember the cheviche? we have that in estonia as well, we call it äkis, it has been made for hundrerds or thousands of years, old recepie says you use fatty fish in the late season and Vaccinium vitis-idaea as the source of sour, but lemon is better, which modern version uses.
You cut the fish up in the boat to small cubes, on the way to the shore and mix it with lemon, onion, salt and oil. some people use chillies and pepper, but thats not needed. it takes about 20 minutes and then its ready, by the time you get to the shore, youll have kids waiting with an open fire and roasting brean on fire to eat it with. heavenly.

It's a point of reference. If people say 'it is like carpaccio,' we know exactly what they mean. If someone said 'It is like akis' I would not have a clue. Sorry and all that. Would You know what an Arbroath smokie is? It is not meant to put cultures down, or claim one is superior to another. It is to help people understand better.
