    My Dad is the great...Ian McCafferty! He's still going strong...despite the fact, as his daughter, i can say, he fooked the race up...he could have and should have won!

      @@AthletixStuffChannel Yes he was a bloody good runner. Unfortunately Scotland didn't give him the worthiness he deserved, nor did the AAA's.

    The iron men of Scotland. But I will most remember Ian for his memorable part in arguably the greatest 5,000 metres race in history at the '72 Olympics. His blistering finish in '72 was breathtaking.

    What a fantastic race! Ian Stewart was a great athlete. Ian McCafferty should have caught him though. He was closing with 60m to go. Another 15m of pressure and he would have drawn almost level and that would have spurred him to push for victory which he would certainly have got. But at that critical moment, he looked over his shoulder, the telling resignation that he chose to settle for second place. The psychology is never, ever look over your shoulder! Credit to both men though for an exciting race.

      i'm glad you agree with Adele and myself. McCafferty just gave up as if he wasn't meant to win. He was finishing much faster than Stewart, but didn't continue it right to the line

    Dick Taylor was the British record holder before the games at 3,5 and 10000m and had scored a memorable victory over Ron Clarke by 18 secs at the Sword Trophy in 69. He made this 5000m into the race it was( An Epic). with some searing pacemaking from 2 laps out. His own position at the end, 6th place, was not a true reflection of the form he had shown in previous races, but thats the way it goes.

    this was the race that gave me the passion for athletics at just 9 years of age. Having watched this over and over again I can't help thinking that McCafferty let him win.He was closing on Stewart all the way down the home straight, then in the final few strides seemed to "ease off " as if he didn't want to win.

      @Addys-Ever-After Před 10 lety

      I'm Adele...Ian McCafferty's daughter...he just went..."ach fuck it" i question him...as he always told me, when i was training...if you have a sprint finish..in the home straight, run like Hell. He could have won! Love my Dad so much...however, he just isn't given the respect he deserves!

    • @englishman1960
      @englishman1960 Před 10 lety

      great to hear from you Adele. This is exactly what I thought. He should have "ran like hell" all the way to the line. Stewart was tiring. Remember Steve Ovett getting beat by John Treacy, because Treacy never gave up down the finishing straight.

      Hi Terry. Yeah, putting it bluntly, my Dad gave up...why? Just him...can you imagine the crowd if he won! Like i said, i was just a twinkle in his eye...but my Mum and her folks and my Dads' folks were there.

    Ian (or is it Iain) Stewart is my cousin, his sister, Sheila Stewart, married Andrew Corson, their son Danny. My Dad was Danny Livingstone (fisherman), 1901-1955. Ian and Lachie Stewart's father was Rodderick and Mum, Annie Livingstone. Great times at Meadowbank.

    Clarke was old, he announced his retirement from track almost immediately following these games. Stewart just came to the race with a lot of moxie and fight and he took it to Kip Keino on that final lap.

      @AthletixStuffChannel  Před 6 lety

      I'm guessing the IAAF had stopped recognising non metric distances by '64...I'm assuming you mean the 20 miles and 2 hour marks he ran during his 30K WR? Oddly still accepted as UK records ,though.Mind,maybe not that odd,as the Commonwealth Games were still using Imperial distances...

Seems to have disappeared after that....anyone out there have any more information?
