The emissions makes a huge difference on these new trucks.
I did a run back a few months back from Vancouver island to Saskatoon (1600kms) to pick up a new travel trailer in my gmc canyon that the emissions stuff sort of fell off.
The trip computer said 6.8 liters per hundred kilometers which is just under 35 mpg.

17.8 mpg is excellent for 75mph speed limit. I think the biggest reason these trucks got 20mpg when new is because the speed limits back then were 55 or 60. Do this test again at those speeds and u will see an improvement

Also what people don't realize or pay attention to is that mpg is an average. Depending on things like throttle position. Engine load how easy one is with the pedals the engine will actually get better mpg at times as well as lower therefor averaging out to 17.8. Oh and we can't forget the elevation that the engine is traveling which affects the air density

    • @richardpenny7813

The speed limit on the freeway (round here) was 70mph when that pickup was new. The switch to ULSD cost me 5mpg until I retuned for it. Now having said all that, running empty these trucks are way over geared, as long as his alignment is good they only require about 40-45 hp to go 80 on level ground (with the tires I tested mine with it varied from 38-47).

I agree with the old truck performance. I have a ‘99 cab and a half, long bed, 6sp manual, 4x4, with 7.3, 3.73 - 100% stock. I get the same MPG highway.
In Sept I bought a used ‘22, crew, long bed, 4x4, 6.7, 3.55, 100% stock with 24,000 on the clock. Driving it from Michigan to NY - 675 miles, averaging 75 mph, I saw 21.7 as my MPG. I landed in NY with 1/4 tank of fuel and 325 miles range.
This was about 2 mpg better than a friend with nearly an identical truck with the 6 speed transmission.
My only flag on this comparison is the dually crew vs srw cab and a half. Lots more weight and drag on the drw.
Around town however the ‘99 beats the ‘22 boasting 20mpg. Where I live is flat and I can idle everywhere in 6th.

I've been saying it for years. The emissions crap they put on vehicles are nothing but a way to make money. Less comes out the tailpipe, but the vehicle is way less reliable. Having to have a tow truck tow your vehicle, the diesel that parts get delivered with and the environmental cost of manufacturing parts makes it about the same if not worse. Basically, cost of ownership went up, reliabilty went down, and environmental costs stayed the same.

The emissions equipment kills the MPG. I know it seems like an paradox, but as a powertrain engineer, I can attest to the fact that it often takes more fuel to clean up tailpipe. That goes for gas and diesel.
And don't anyone be commenting about deleting to save the truck or some shit. Rolling coal in old trucks, and deleting in new trucks is why we won't have diesel trucks soon.
