LDV D90 family SUV review: Best seven-seater on a budget?

  • The LDV D90 is hardly a household name - but if your household is on a budget, maybe it should be.
That's because this is the largest seven-seater SUV for buyers on a budget in Australia. It has more space than plenty of the big name rivals, and costs far less than most -- at least for the base model petrol versions.
There's also a diesel, which is the one I drove, but honestly you probably don't need to spend the thousands extra to get it.
There's a long list of standard equipment, and while it mightn't be perfect, it makes some other rivals like the Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Ford Everest look like they're a bit tight on space in the back!

@therightcar I got the D90 on Monday this week, I must say it's a lot of car for the price. Best thing is it's a company car too. I had a Jeep grand cherokee and it was a great car but the D90 Executive diesel is a step up in every way.. did you ever manage to try "sports 4 wheel driving" (that was so funny the way you said that, in a great way). If I ever try it, I'll let you know.

@@therightcar thanks for that, I had a Ssangyong when they were more well known for being the ugliest car but I drove mine for nearly 300000km and while not the most refined it was definitely dependable. I would have got the rexton back in 2019 when the newer model was first released but the dealer network or specifically the dealer I had to deal with lost it, so the Jeep got the nod. Different circumstances now I don’t need the biggest tow machine out there but central Queensland roads make a it a necessity to have an SUV that is capable. Nice review mate! I actually prefer the look of the LDV D90 over the SsangYong Rexton, but I think I'd like the interior more in the Rexton. I believe there is a facelifted D90 waiting in the wings, which has given the D90 a more rugged look!

I've put a deposit on one of these (the executive diesel model) and was impressed with the test drive. What I really liked overall about the D90 is that it felt solid which the Rexton I auditioned didn't. SAIC, who make the D90 have been around since 1955. The engine is made by a reputable Italian company, the transmission is borrowed from VW I believe and the electronics come from a variety of sources. With the 10 year warranty and roadside assist which I paid a little bit extra for I feel that I'm well covered. I looked at the Prado equivalent (according to features) and it's over double the price.

So as far as bad Chineese packaging goes this SUV is a good 7 seater with a decent 3rd row comprable to some Japaneese MPV's that arent in the market because they are too cheap, reliable and have no ADAS. Only downside is no 360 degree camera for the large unit.

The indicator noise is obnoxiously loud. I've driven a variety of makes and models and the indicator noise is stupidly loud for no reason. I cant stand it.
It's also so slow to take off from a stopped position like at a red light. I thought my D-Max was a bit slow, but this is noticeabley slower, and i have the petrol executive so i don't know what the deal is. If i didn't have to drive it for work I wouldn't. My other gripe is connecting phones. If you have an android forget about it. The car wants you do download an app that Samsung won't download because it doesn't trust it so it's bluetooth only. It sucks that Apple car play has to be connected via a cord to work unlinke other car brands.
