FYI guys I didnt mention one of the playable characters since its considered spoilers soooo just so ya knowww
u wut m8?
SuperButterBuns honestly it says it in the steam description so i dont think thats to much of a spoiler
SuperButterBuns What happened to "tomorrow afternoon" and "i'm gunna rest"? Love yaself buns.
buns, you should make a spoiler analysis at some point of what you thought of the story and characters in detail. i'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
Hey bun what do you think of that catherine stream that happened a couple days ago
Yoko Taro isn't being self aware for the sake of being self aware, he is an uber troll. If he could get away with it, he would probably put in a boss that attacks the game's framerate.
Malcom Alexander omg man that would be kojima levels of trollings
He did.... I don't want to spoil how but it's related to the hacking minigame
Kishuy Wait really!! I don't remember that! Did I missed it? I need to know!!
Just constantly fail the hacking minigame against the bosses that do it and you will see. But it's unrelated to the performance issues
Could not have said it better
10/10 replay for the romeos and juliets play all over again
"You're thinking about how much you want to ****** 2B, aren't you?"

I saw that and I was like "fair enough"
@@_Altus hey no one I know has played N:A wana talk about it bc I need to speeeeeeek lol

I'm in the same boat. Though I wouldn't know where to begin and YT replies is perhaps not the best place for discussion.
But reply again if you want.

So it's an open-world hack-and-slash JRPG bullethell?
Cool.
I wonder what that sounds like
Open-world hack-and-slash 3-d side-scrolling top-down JRPG bullethell text adventure, sounds more like it.
Sounds like my kind of game tbh.
Same
All the game category I love
9S was actually a lot of fun. If you hack into a robot if he is not aware of you, you can take them over and play with their abilities. Just going around and testing all the abilities of the robots against themselves is fun.
Also you really need the Auto-collect item chip.
lol somehow i missed that chip all the way through to ending E i didnt even know it existed till i saw someone using it on their playthrough XD
I've platinum'd the game (Bought nothing but the fishing/pod upgrade trophies) and I still haven't found that chip o.O
You can buy it from the twins when they are in the resistance camp. There's a short window to go to the store, but that's the only place to get it.
Late to party but the 9S play through can be very abbreviated (unless you did barely any side quest in route A like me) plus the hacking attack is so overpowered I welcomed it for boss fights because been there done that.
So in reality the second play through wasn’t nearly the chore this review would make it seem it is
True, but the problem is trying to sneak up onto a machine. I think some stealth elements would definitely have worked for 9S, because then it would be like playing as a spy.
Guys, always eat the Mackeral, it maxes out stats.
Kunal Zetryte Sure it does
Also remove the os chip as soon as possible, it gives you a huge amount of data space for more chips
and remember if the game tells you to go somewhere and it sounds urgent, go the opposite direction thats where they hide the good loot
And always kill Pascal. He's not to be trusted.
Alright. Im about to get this game but...
>Something about this feels fishy.
>I feel like the internet is trying to troll me once more.
bought it for 2b's butt, stayed for the story
Roman Riesen A man of culture of well I see
Sorry but yours truly bought the game for the story but stayed for 2b’s butt de gozaru

Same here but I stopped playing because of the horrendous map lay out. It made finding objectives annoying. I really really wanted to like this game to but the map killed any enjoyment I had.
the map will not be Improved. it was intentionally designed to be bad to screw with players because yoko taro is a troll.
Daniel ____ I find that funny... but also can't help but roll my eyes at someone intentionally implementing bad game design to make a point.
it was explained that the map is made with satellite imagry so it can only give a rough outline of the world, imo i didnt mind it since the world was small enough that i didnt get lost, it probably helps that i usually have a good sense of direction in videogames and my brain naturally maps the area out though lol
The map was explained in the game why it's junky
I thought the map was great.
Yea, the mysterious man even tells us this :P
Fantastic video Butters. Always good to hear you talk about the highs and lows of games.
I kind of hate to do this, but I am gonna make one small counter-argument though, and it's about the philosophy of what Yoko Taro tries to convey in his games vs player expectations. You said that you wished there was a scoring system so that players wouldn't be so encouraged to cheese through fights, whether it be by eating damage and just healing it off, using just the same combos, etc. The problem with that is that this isn't really a Platinum game, which rewards players for flashily wiping the floor on tough opponents while looking stylish as all hell. It's Platinum making a Yoko Taro game, which means it's based on his mentality.
Taro has gone on record stating he hates how killing is the default means that players characters for video games usually interact with NPCs. This is usually represented by showing that anyone who would kill tens to hundreds to thousands of people are usually either very messed up to flat out not good people. Nier Automata kind of takes this in a slightly different direction by removing the joy and bloodlust of killing from the main characters but by presenting them as soldiers, who are inherently forced to fight because that's what soldiers do. Soldiers CAN feel joy in battle or bloodlust, but ours don't really express that (there's a sidequest that may indicate fighting does feel good for androids, but the evidence is a little questionable and that possible fact never really determines any dialogue or actions the characters take in-game). They just fight because that's what their job demands of them. It's not something that they find especially rewarding. It's not something they especially want to do over any other activity. They kill because they must, and that's all it means to them.
To tie that back to the player themselves, having the game itself go out of its way to plaster a big "Platinum" on the screen when your done expertly skewering a group of robots is definitively too rewarding for this game's message. Taro is trying to present killing as being a hollow action that brings no emotional merit to our characters lives, and trying to reward the player with a scoreboard would ultimately detract from this game's core standard. The game WANTS it to be okay to cheese fights or use cheap tactics, because all the game cares about at the end of the day is that some more robots are dead. The story doesn't care if you looked cool doing it. The characters don't care how many combos you pulled off. The rewards the game DOES give you don't care if you were completely untouched to earn them or if you healed five whole health bars worth of damage for them. Killing is a tasteless action that someone has to do, and you are the one doing it. As long as the horrible job gets done, perfectly or imperfectly, all the results are the same. You still killed.
...A "small counter-argument" may look pretty big, but it needed some setup. Sorry for the wall of text. Still loved the video :)
This is an interesting argument, and it totally makes sense in the Taroverse. With that in mind, I think there's an intentional irony in the way the Androids and Machines move when they fight.
Machines fight like machines. They're robotic and purposeful, with very little in the way of flashiness. They just find the fastest way to kill you, to the best of their otherwise limited abilities. They match the mentality you illustrate above.
As for the Androids (particularly 2B), there is DEFINITELY some flashiness in their combat, and the animations seem to tell a story of their own. From 2B's charged Large Sword light attack (which ends in a beautiful ballet twirl) to her infamous "Pole Dance" attack (Large Sword/Spear transition attack), even to the way she retracts any of her thrusting spear attacks (she'll retract, lovingly glance at her spear, and give it a little spin before returning to a fighting stance), 2B frequently adds these superfluous flourishes that indicate she doesn't just fight as a means to an end; she looks like she's having FUN. This is less the case with 9S, who isn't really a combat model, but for the Executioner-spec 2B, it wouldn't be surprising if she was programmed to enjoy killing, something she would come to resent over time. She consciously knows that killing isn't good (a lesson she likely learned from being forced to kill 9S repeatedly before the start of the game), but she can only do so much to resist her core programming. It's kind of sad if you think about it that way.
I read your small wall of text, and after playing 6 hours of the game, I can say: "yep" :)
Still read the whole damn thing.
From someone who hasn't played the game yet and already excited, this comment has me even more interested! This ethic is a really nice extra layer to think about and will definitely influence my playthroughs now! Thanks!
Some people deserve to die
21:19 it's not a true JRPG without invisible walls
You mean a powerful foe casting force wall somewhere on this world that i *JUST* can't happen to find cause i suck, right?
And this place is full of them 😂
You literally only replay the same story once, and they give you the hack feature specifically to let you breeze through all the bosses in like 4 hits. The third branch is completely different from the A and B routes. Your phrasing implies that there are like 5-6 playthroughs that are all identical to each other, there are only 3, and one is a completely different story and chain of events entirely.
Thank you! You pointed out the most glaring mistake in this entire review. A correction should be added to the text field under the video, because people do not necessarily read these comments...
pdragon619 just started my second playthrough. should I be doing all the same side quests as I did on the first playthrough? seems a bit pointless to do them all again.
the side quests are differnt, 9S has his own quests, and while you can finish off some sidequests you started on the first route, if you alrready finished a quest it wont make you replay it (with exception of a couple like the mandatory side quests when you first got to the resistance camp)
Brandon Withnell ah I see. Yeah I did the mandatory ones you mentioned and assumed they would all be the same. thanks for the reply I'll get stuck in now
There are sidequests for 2B, sidequests for 9S and some for both but every sidequest you did as 2B won't show up for 9S.
just a tip to playing this game save every time you did something
@Elizabeth R
Nah, it's because you die a lot. There aren't very many bugs in the game. I've gone through all 5 endings twice and haven't encountered a single error.
But, yes. Save frequently. The game does not autosave. It'll save you a LOT of frustration.
even after you save?
Unless the thing you did was fail a sidequest that resulted in the death of child robot... which I did
@AWildIvan oof
I had to do the last mission of route b over again because I decided to self destruct in the bunker during the credits to see what would happen.
I beat the game in basically 3 days, got it on Tuesday, played so long on Thursday by the time I was finished it was 6am Friday morning. All the way to ending E. And the more I think about this game, the more I love it
It's not a real Drakengard style game unless it ends with a dance dance revolution style timing minigame fight with some eldritch horror that last five-twelve minutes and if you screw up once you have to start over. Seriously, if you want to see the absolute hardest boss in gaming check out Drakengard 3's final boss, and then remember that up until that point, the game was a hack and slash/button masher.
SageofStars oh dont worry, the final boss is on par with super disco flower
SageofStars that boss was cake after a few rounds of practice thanks to the sweet sweer music try the original drakengard. top bs boss final endings lol
Oh it ends much much horrible than that. So much horrible you will love it and want more (talking about ending after multiple playthroughs)
which final boss are you talking about? the one w/ E or the one w/ uhmm the Twr?
Ending Y, during credits
This was such an entertaining video. Funny as hell lol, subbed!

Oh hey! it's Cryy!
20:14 "Stuff gets repetitive, I am tired of the shooting. Please no thank you."
... That is one of the core messages the story is trying to tell.
"Lets make our game frustrating to play just to make a boring point!"
I like Nier and I'm still playing through Automata right now, but this is a shit point. You can make those types of points without it negatively impacting the gameplay experience. Route B is so unbelievably poorly designed and this game would be so much better if it was implemented differently. Playing through 85% of the same game that you JUST played is a serious motivation killer.
@@echo2413 idk about "unbelievably poorly designed", but I do agree with the rest. You can make story points hit home without making it a core of the gameplay.
@@tijmenteering9877 Yeah i take back my harshness. I still agree with my overall sentiment but Route B wasn't as bad as i anticipated. There was definitely a lot of unnecessary repetition though which I didn't like.
So glad you did this spoiler-free. I don't buy $60 games, so I won't get to play Near Tomato for a long time but really, really like the looks of it and wouldn't ever want to skip one of your videos.
You mention playing as different characters? Can you play as *REMOVED FOR YOUR PROTECTION*?
Glad you liked it! And yes you play as A2 in about the 3rd playthrough I just didnt mention her since she is kinda spoilerish
Ah, well it turns out I wrote my comment too early. I thought the guy in shorts was named 2A (for some reason I thought they were designed as brother/sister sort of androids... I don't know where I got that idea, never played any of the NieR/Drakengard games). Then you disabused me of that notion and let me know that yeah you do play as him, 9S. I knew I shoulda waited until the video was over to comment, but I just wanted to thank you for the spoiler-free nature. Normally I don't care about spoilers, but when a game is like this and has interesting concepts and weirdness I really like the surprise. Thanks for the video!
Also, should I edit my comment since you said its kinda spoilerish? Yeah, I'm gonna do that just to avoid possibly getting someone miffed... sorry.
The fact that you play as A2 is in the back of the box if you bought the game physical. Not really a spoiler.
Dustin Rodriguez You mean NieR Automatopia.
now this is just a hunch but i think buns MIGHT not like bullet hell games
ShadowErus they were some ofmy favorite parts of the game. My biggest complaint is the shooting sections didn't get hard enough. And I'm not really particularly good at shooters
Ya, it's funny when buns compared it to Galaga, because that was my initial reaction too XD
I think a big issue is that the melee-ish move deleted ALL the bullets. You could just mash that and survive the schmup segments.
@@darkuscarlet however the darker bullets are not destroyed by melee attacks. This is a gimmick that comes from the original Nier game, where certain types of bullets could be destroyed by swords but not all of em
I love the game so far BUUUUUT... for now I wish that they put some more bosses into the game like the opera singer boss battle. It was so intense and good. I want more of that
I think this is an amazing game that got released at the worst possible time. It just got lost between Horizon, Zelda, and Mass Effect... Reviewers and people just did not have enough time this month for them all, so the oddball game got lost.
David Ouillette What do you mean? It wipes Horizon and Mass Effect's ass (and everyone says it, it's not like it went under the radar), plus it's a PS4/PC game while Zelda is a Nintendo game, so it doesn't collide there. Everyone's obsessing with this game, it's a big hit man
It is a big hit but I will bet you money that come award or top ten lists it gets eclipsed by Horizon and Zelda. My own opinion is Nier is a near perfect game and deserves top awards... It has the perfect blend of Yokotaro's mind bending story telling, with Platinum Game's tight as hell gameplay.
Honestly I haven't heard a single person put Horizon over NieR, and it won't happen in awards. About Zelda, it's by far the best exploration game ever made. But that's just when talking about exploration, its combat mechanics on the other hand are completely broken and the shrines and stuff are mostly super repetitive and shit, so NieR has a good advantage there. Honestly I think it's biggest competitor is Persona 5.
I hope I am wrong. (It's not uncommon for me to be wrong)
I think Persona has a chance, but it is such a deep dive game that it limits it's own audience.
Nacho Bear smh...
I agree with you that the lack of a socring/point system is a shame. But on the other hand, wouldn't this go against the story? Sure you get stronger and can get money and new weapons by killing machines, but the game, at least from my impression, doesn't treat any fight as a good thing.
The machines literally beg you to stop killing them. :(
Yeah, in a game (and series) that relies heavily on moral ambiguity to provide the punch of its narrative, rewarding acts of mass murder in that fashion would create quite a bit of ludonarrative dissonance, and probably would have created a diminished overall experience.
For example, when I first came to the Amusement Park, I saw that the robots weren't attacking me, but I also saw the nearby Android corpses. As I passed through the park, I walked a tense tightrope between preemptively defending myself and sparing these ostensibly harmless robots. I ultimately spared everyone, even the tank that 9S warned me to kill, because I was starting to understand that not all of the robots were war machines. That was a very memorable experience that strongly colored my perception of the game, one that I may have never experienced if I just went in and slaughtered everyone for extra points.
@@Tenchigumi you get achievement or trophy for killing innocents btw
👍😘💨 💞
@@TheReZisTLust But to be fair, this is a game that lets you buy trophies, and at least one of the trophies actively shames you, so even their take on trophies is a subversion of gaming tropes.
Additionally having played through a bunch of the side quests most of them make the world a far worse place in my opinion. From the Amnesia quests to the one where you find a resistance fighter’s missing friend to the one where you unlock the door to get a child robot out from hiding. My actions seem to only cause more misery and hardship.
The map was just awful, and I like how there's even a tutorial guy at the resistance camp who says "Do you think the map sucks? Too bad, deal with it"
😂 ikr and all the invisible walls wtf
At the start of the B route I was disappointed to see that 9S had more limited options in combat (which story-wise makes sense because he isn't a battle unit), but by the end I ended up loving playing as him. If anyone sees this...
Get a spear (I used the spear of the usurper) and max it out as much as you can. 9S is really good with a spear. I barely did any hacking in battle, so it didn't at all get tiring for me.
Cheesing through the game is your choice. From what I've heard, the director doesn't want story tied behind difficulty. So while you can cheese your way through, Platinum also provides you the tools to make the game deep. Again, it's the player's choice.
Making my way through the tower as 9S in the last part of the story destroyed me, it took me hours trying to hack the f*ing chests
And then I realized you can go on easy mode and have the job done for you, I simultaneously loved and hated this game in that moment
I love the theme park area. the music and creepy-ish atmosphere was so well made
nickbotful Have you seen the park after.. something specific happened?
oh yeah. it went from creepy-ish to a scary hellscape of death
Yes I love the melee combat, but the shooting is great, literally have no issues with it. Some of the shooting parts get crazy bullet hell sequences too, really adds a nice change of pace.
9S has exclusive quests though. Heavy-hitting -holy crap they went there-amazing
The question is: Who would win in a fight? Raiden, Bayonetta, or 2B.
Why is that even a question?
because it requires explanation
It's self-explanatory.

So I know I'm late but I JUST jumped on the Nier train and HOLY CRAP ITS AMAZING. One of the best games I've played in a long time! Also this is the 2nd video of yours I have watched and they are hilarious but still helpful! Thanks for what you do!
Personally i loved the shmup sections, and 9S has lots of options for physical combat, but it does take some getting used to
Seu Bolovo yeah. 9s plays differently that only a few people know how to use him correctly in battle without relying on hacking. Also he says it himself he's not a combat model he's a scouting model. he fights from a distance. 9S does deal the most damage because hacking is op as hell.
people complain so much about the combat limitation. I played through the game as 9s with combat build just fine, made 2nd hard mode speed run. They're probably not used to playing action games.
I still agree that the game has too much shooting though. If the shooting was mostly focus on 9S's playthrough, that would've been fine, but int he case of the balance characters, 2B, there is a little too much shotting.
Also the hacking minigame being a shooting game as well does not help. I would've prefer a different type of hacking but it would have to be something really fast pace to not break the flow of battle.
I always run with a pipe. Closest phallic object in regards of machines. and the crit is nice too i guess

Years late to the party on this, but the shmup sections are a lot more fun when you remember your mech has a sword too
Buns you are seriously talented on the humor department. I look forward so much to your videos.
I 100% love this game. I love 2Bs butt. On top of all of that fantabulous rump flesh, I adore most of the characters and admire how well the game did at making me like and dislike certain characters. Haven't gotten every ending yet, but I'm working on it. A2 looks better with long hair.,
I love the character designs a lot, it was designed by Akihiko Yoshida and not Kimihiko Fujisaka who helped designed all of Taro's other games. I've always liked Yoshida's work.
I self destructed 9s to see him without pants
When I first got this game I literally played 8 hours straight.
I do wish you mentioned side quests like Emil's memories, yorha betrayers, and anemone's past that you MUST PLAY.
Buns, you're my new top 10 favorite reviewer.
The humour is spot on and the information dump is just enough to leave me interested.

Vanquish, 'member that? No youtubers mention Vanquish.
i was able to make my 9s basically full combat. he doesnt have as many combos as 2b but with the right chips he can be really fast and powerful. I barely use hacking. i only usd hacking when it prompted me to or when i wanted to kill a gold enemy
9S is a madlad with a spear
OMG! Why are you killing the non hostile machines?
awwnuts07 I just started. I killed them all. Was that bad
I am so glad that I found this video! I was just looking for this kind of stuff, and it's amazing that you made a huge video about it, to ride me over till I can play it again. And no spoilers!? Amazing! Thank you very much, Buns.
Also, I saved you from the triple six comment number. XD

automata was so damn good and im gonna work towards all of those endings. and throughout the entire game, i almost never hit 60 fps rip
KoaAbyss you playing on the pro?
there is a ton of shooting in this game, but theres a reason for that. Yoko Taro said in an interview that always wanted to make a bullet hell game. the company he was with at the time though declined, and implemented the mechanic in OG Nier and Automata.
The first time stumbling onto the Amusement Park, I concluded this will be one of the favourite games.
To see what became of it honestly broke me. Thankful for the Roller Coaster and Game Room..
That location is/was breathtaking and love just going there to stand around, watch and listen in the background.
Just saw your Nier Automata for Beginners vid. It seems like you like it a lot more now. That one got me to get back in and start finishing the game properly. Then again, I just finally discovered your channel and maybe that's just part of your "Yelling About" series. Great channel so far though.
you're the first person i ever watched thats sponsored by gamefly it amazes me for some reason
Damn, this review finally sold me on the game. Just ordered. Thanks!
personally, i love the sheer amount of different ways to fight in this game, and the tons of equips.
More reviews need to be like this. Detailed and entertaining and straight up honest :)
I love that creative guy who rolled around on the ground screaming NIER AUTOMATA TSHIRT NIER AUTOMATA TSHIRT
That's Yoko Taro, the evil brain behind Drakengard and NieR.
So doesn't anyone else think that 2B and 9S's personalities through the game sound a little bit like Lightning and Hope?
Connor the game dude I was just thinking about that this morning. (Especially lightning= 2b)
Please don't compare them, they have more personality than the two of them combined and their androids for goodness sake dood XD
Yes, they are the same archtype, although I would say 2B and 9S are written much better. 9S is not annoying and 2B compromises intead of having 2 extremes. also 2B is not angry at the world, she is just stoic. Lightning was, although understandable, angry at everyone most of the time.
That said, what really tell both apart is how the characters are written. in Nier A, the characters are mutlidimentional, while in FFXIII they seem to just check a bullet point of characterists and follow a narrative that wasn't that impressive.
But this is my uneducated opinion
Shadow60f Prepare for triggerred ff13 fans who im ashamed to be a part of 😂
Meh everyone's entitled to their opinion but by yoko taro can I personally not stand ff13 dood XD
I've gotta say thank you for your reviews and for beginners series. I wouldn't have ever played most of what are now my favorite games if it wasn't for your channel, so thank you.
Hey, protip! There was a Japan-only stage play in 2014 that details the backstory of one of the player characters. It's not necessary to enjoy the game, but it's totally worth checking out if you're a hardcore fan and/or really enjoy the lore. There's a translated version of the script online, and supposedly there's also a subbed recording of the play itself.
if you like fallout the colour pallet shouldn't be a problem
Honestly Tho? ... It was fine and i like Fallout 1- Nv
Watched it all the way through to the end
Yes, you saw my conflict between Nier and Horizon, soon gonna add Persona to that list
Good work on the video
David GN40 PS4 games on my radar: Persona 5, Tales of Berseria, Kingdom Hearts (all of them), Horizon, Nier, and Nioh. Wtf I don't have time for all of that. Also I'm loving the crap out of Breath of the Wild right now so RIP social life. (Yeah right, I had no social life anyway...)
dont forget Gravity Rush 2. That came out not too long ago.
Oh God, Tales, Gravity Rush and Nioh
Still need those
I already preordered Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5
And I had 2.8 since day 1
(I'm a KH DIE HARD)
I NEED THAT TOO
I cant stress enough how much I love this video, your commentary is perfect as usual, Nier: Automata is my favourite game ever, and with Tchaikovsky in the background, my favourite composer ever, this video just does it for me 😌❤️
Excellent, most accurate review I've seen. Importantly, with NO spoilers!!! I'm only at lvl 16, but man on man, the action is great, the story looks solid, the atmosphere is fitting, the music flows well. But like you mentioned, there are possible improvements here and there, but doesn't ruin the overall game play. I believe this video should receive more credit than it's getting.
I dunno if you know this, but 2B's character is SO DIFFERENT (well, not that much, but enough that it matters) depending on the language you play in! I played the game once in English/English subs and then in Japanese/Korean subs, and WOW. You're right that 2B is this hard badass cold warrior that warms up later, but in Japanese she's just... so much more... how can I even explain this. More cute? Like, criminally cute? Sweeter? Far more innocent? For instance, in the side mission escorting the "Little Sister" robot and 9S whines at 2B for help when asked where babies come from(...), Eng 2B goes "You're the talkative one" and shuts him down ruthlessly, while Jap 2B stutters "E, Even if you ask me in that kind of voice(a cute voice)...!" ...I'm a girl too, but I died a little then. She was ADORABLE.
Man, just do yourselves a favor and please try the Japanese voice some time, though I don't know if the Eng subs will reflect the change properly. I like the Eng voices much better for the Pods, but for 2B? Japanese. Hands down. (Though Eng again for A2, just to hear her say "Shut up" all the time)
why the nutcracker in the background tho? xD
near tomato
that sold me.
subbed!

Yes, you do replay bosses, but you do get new tidbits of information about the bosses and changes in how the bosses work (good example of this of this being Beauvoir/Simone)
You'll appreciate all the shmup stuff if you like stuff like Galaga, Ikaruga, Sine Mora, Astebreed and alot of Tohou games.
As a new nier player omg this was fun to play. Also butts...lots of butts
Yes, the invisible walls drive me nuts, especially when you can see an area right next to them where they made it obvious that it's closed off ( rubble, bushes etc ). Also, I was the opposite when it came to the shooting, I get super excited when I hear/see the mech suits ( I'm also 40 so that should tell you what games I played growing up ( Robotron, 1942, Space invaders etc. Speaking of Robotron, there should be more twinstick modes in games )
I'm new to this type of game and i love it! Normally I'm skeptical about hack-and-slash games but idk this game does it good and i love the gameplay, music and background. Buns nice video :)
I call it Nier: Gold Tomato because Au = Gold and Tomata = Tomato
i think its lame that your combo essentially doesnt change or progress. the gameplay is good but doesnt evolve. its the same light attack > throw blade. heavy attack > slow swing. it gets boring despite the plot. and sand/metal 24/7 isnt all that appealing.
Akihiko Yoshida's designs are just perfect. Bravely Default and Second, FFIII and 4 heroes of light.
What's funny is that I didn't even really use the hacking ability on 9s I just used the combat bracers charged attack, but when I had to go to the area that literally made you have to hack things to progress I was there for hours
There are a TON of negatives in every review I see. I'm taking this as people really, really enjoying the game and, because of that passion, are picking apart each and every thing they can. Does this seem accurate?
Way late: But yes, as I see it. Nier: A tomato is a good game, but it's not perfect. If you're new to the series you'll miss a lot of neat stuff connecting it to the first Nier, Hacking is essentially just Yoko Tarou stubbornly making bullet hell despite being told to make Action RPG, and You'll certainly have unanswered questions by even the 3rd completion (5-6 should wrap it up, Endings A, B, C, D, and E) Then the 20ish Less narrative heavy endings, half of which are jokes and most of the rest and existential crisis in Android form.
But despite those flaws the majority of the game is fun if you don't hate Platinum, and the story is actually good enough that even though most people are sick to death of shooting at polygons in weird white computer land by the end No one says it wasn't worth it. Plus the music is the best OST of the past few years at least.
I also think Nier: Automata will, or should, be an important game in an academic sense - A lot of games with strong narrative could be books, or movies(kinda long ones, maybe shows would be better) But it's not all that common for the simple fact that it's a Video Game you're playing to be deliberately taken advantage of and used to present a story in a way that would be irrevocable in some other medium- Nier:A HAS to be a game as trying to work it's narrative around some non interactive format would hurt it desperately. And as weird as that is, this is fairly uncommon except in generally meta-commentary works or 4th wall shattering pieces
It's 2019 a new sequel emerges , It's the Nier: Tomato.
thanks for your work butterbuns! this and the automata review were hilarious and awesome!
When you started talking about the ship segments being reptivie and having too much shooting, I noticed you never used the sword, the mech has all the same attack options as you would on the ground, hell when I was using it I got a bit nostalgic and felt like I was back in armored core destroying everything with the moonlight.
is there gonna be a Horizon Zero Dawn video? :o
Well if its repetitive.. Something hymn.. this cannot Continue.. but when you good.. you become a GOD... XD
FVA Yes
Become as gods.
FOR THE FOREST KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!!!!!
GOD GOD GOD GOD GOD GOD GOD
Loving this game, and found your review super entertaining. Currently on second playthrough, and I agree that the hacking minigame does not make up for hobbling 9S' combat. I do enjoy the flight unit shooty shooty sections, though, they remind me of my childhood bullet hell arcade games that swallowed my quarters. I do like the stories in the side quests, many of them are quite tragic, melancholy, and/or trigger some self-reflection. They remind me a lot of some of the quests in Witcher 3, which I've heard was an inspiration Platinum used to design their open world.
Best game of the year? That may be too soon to tell, but for me, it's certainly the best game I've played all year.
Youre so amazing Buns and I love your videos so much and I get so excited when you upload!! :)
Buns loves those buns
the game was really good. but really sad like really sad .
First time to watch a video on this channel. Second minute. Subbed. Great presentation and awesome sense of humor.
I’m new here, and I actually found your videos about Nier: Automata because I just finished the game myself (as in all 5 major endings finished) and didn’t want to be finished with the world... 😂 I absolutely loved the game, and even though I’ve surpassed the 55 hour mark across the multiple routes, I wish I had more to do in it: I’m that invested. Anyway, I’ve only watched two videos so far, but you have some great content! Keep up the good work!
2 years late to this lol but you should watch/listen to the stage play (epilogue to ending E) and read the side content and stories. they expand on the nier world and imo is essential to really get the most out of automata
@@humanityyy I absolutely will!! Thank you!
I dont get why everyone is saying 9s don't do much damage. There is no difference!
Buns pin this question. Who's butt is the thickest 2B's or Bayonetta's? This will decide the fate od Gladio, life or death.
Excellent review. first time catching one of yours, but will certainly seek your vids when considering new titles in the future. Oh yeah.. got the game.. loving it.. came back to say thanks.
This is my first time seeing your content, and I'm glad because this is a great, comprehensive review! Subscribed!

It been almost 5 years since I play this game so I bought it over the weekend and agree with everything you said ! This game is just to dope and the music ! Don’t get me started with the music!
Just finished watching a play through of this game yesterday... Story & characters are incredibly engaging, gameplay looks so fun, the endings were all covered & most were hilarious, and overall the game was great.
I'd buy this game just for 2B's butt
Okay this is very random, and I know I'm in the minority of this train of thought but I gotta ask. Does anyone else feel that 2B and 9S's relationship dynamic feel ALOT like lighting and hope from Final Fantasy xiii. I mean even their individual personalities are similar to their counterparts. Like seriously if you switched the voice actors between these pairs their characters wouldn't be lost I SWEAR.
Robin Crowtalker lol this is to true
though 9s didn't act like a lil bitch
This is also true
They are so much more than that. Lightning and Hope don't really have a personality apart from their cliché attitude.
I think they're different in that I don't remember anything about Lightning and Hope, but I don't think I'm ever gonna forget 2B and 9S.
I understand what you're saying in this video but playing as 9s just seemed so much more satisfying you could hack you could do combat and you could just have a bunch of chips. I'm a big turned based fan but this game did not disappoint and the game play was just really good.
the shmup sections i greatly enjoy because i like shmups, fits in with the theme of constantly recontextualizing level design into isometric stuff or 2d castelvania dungeon crawling.
the hacking did get annoying though, good god you just do so much of it all of the time. either way, great video.
"Standalone title" Wtf? It's a sequel of NieR, obviously, just watch the endings of NieR
It can still be played as a standalone title
And NieR Gestalt/Replicant wasn't a standalone either
I think I played the boss fight with the quiet background music and you're right, it's really disappointing. It's such a surprise considering how well the game transitions between songs for locations in the open world, dimming the instrumentals to a cappella vocals and slowly introducing the next song's insturmentals then vocals.
When i found out about the self destruct function i used it in the bunker, you could also buy the dress module from emil's shop near the resistance camp I think.
Ow and make sure you don't miss ending Y.
Actually the thing that attaches me to this game is the lifeless environment. It's totally up my alley. I love seeing the jungle outgrow into the buildings and driveway, overpowering things that made human think they are king of the world. I do love the occasional random meet with NPC at any place, but most of the time I wander around reconstructing and imagining the lives that used to live in those buildings.
