As a young coach I am glad to see that I am not saying these lies to my swimmers! Always worried about how I am doing and reinforcement like this helps a ton! Love your video!
One reason I actually stopped swimming (in a team) was bc I’d just had enough of the swim meets. I did like them but not at the frequency we were doing them - it was stressing me out and I just wanted to swim for the sake of swimming. However swimming in meets was a requirement for being on the team / swimming at a very advanced level. Now I swim by myself and I’m very happy with it (haven’t even gotten any slower, despite not having a professional coach lol)
I used to hate swim meets too, but my coach was awesome and found a bunch of ways for me to like them. He signed me up for relays first with my best friends, so I wasn’t as nervous and it was more fun. He also let us go out for lunch and dinner together at the mall opposite the comp and we would spend days together at the comp venue. Slowly slowly I loved swim meets and loved watching my timing improve and feeling the satisfaction of wainning. I still get nervous at comps, but a lot less
My swimming coach says none of it. But my daughter's basketball coach said it all, so she left the team. Coach is very important for improvement, personal growth, also for fun.
The one on specialising in a particular event/distance is something why I want to do everything the sport have to offer to help show swimmers that we don’t have to. We can do every event. I only have 6 events away from competing in all of the events in yards and meters. I just need to swim the 400, 500, 800, 1,000, 1,500, and 1,650 freestyle.
Really enjoyed this video and feeling vindicated in my thinking, thanks! I swim (and sometimes coach) in a Master's club. The pressure to compete at times is crazy as is the distance over quality element. At 62 I usually trial just either side of 30sec for a short course 50 free but refuse to compete because I did that as a kid and have no interest, I just love the feeling of technique coming together for a good session and use swimming as a fitness base for other recreational activities and the well being benefits. I do 2 solo sessions a week to focus on technique, quality and try out different drills and approaches, along with 1 squad session for balance. Swimming should be about what you want it to be, not what others tell you it should be.
I love this video. It's about swimming for life and life is something one defines according to priorities and realistic schedules/goals. By far this is the best swimming CZcams channel !
Except for the occasional sore* shoulder, knee, elbow, etc, I’ve loved swimming as an adult on my own time, pace, and creative sets. It’s a wonderful stress reliever, great excuse for improving my nutrition, exercise, sleep, etc, as a busy adult. I am grateful for the examples and experiences from coaches, and the memories of camaraderie of teammates, the excitement, challenges and life lessons from practicing, racing, and all the experiences from being on swim teams when young. *But, I’m also very grateful for the maturity and the many helpful videos on avoiding or dealing with various injuries or aches & pains, like from channels such as: *Bob & Brad (physical therapy+++) *e3 Rehab (PT, elbows) *Effortless swimming (shoulder impingement) *Skills N’ Talents (breath work) *Squat University shorts (~PT w/ shoulders, form, etc)
Well, I’m swimming again and I started back on August 29, 2022. Began by swimming for one hour. Then my goal was to be able to swim a mile in an hour. Committed to swim 4x a week. Got up to 42 laps in an hour, then by Sept. 23, got up to 48 laps in an hour. October 6/ 50 laps in an hour. Yesterday, I managed 53 laps in an hour, but kept swimming until I did a total of 72 laps in a 25 yard pool! I’m 63 and I’m losing weight and getting my stamina back after the past two years of inactivity due to Covid. And like the videos I’ve watched, I am losing weight! I also am careful of what I eat. But idk what the person above is saying about not losing weight through swimming. I appreciate your videos a lot!
Thanks for sharing, Becky! That's amazing. Keep up the great work and have fun! You also may want to check out this video: czcams.com/video/YZpW7bIywjk/video.html
@@FaresKsebati I have been swimming front crawl, backstroke, double arm backstroke, and sidestroke. I took lessons as a kid, but never learned all the strokes. I’ve been trying to focus on my technique that I’ve seen in some of your other videos. I have been wanting to use paddles and fins for strengthening and variety. Still need to buy some goggles like the ones you endorsed. I see no need to swim 72 laps for awhile, but it was nice to reach that goal. Looking to improve my technique, too. I will say that I do speed up when I see the water aerobic class coming in to take the lanes away! Thanks for the extra video.
Another thing I hear, especially from club coaches is you must swim year round. I am a big proponent of kids playing multiple sports. Builds other muscle that will protect swimmers from injury and make them stronger. I think this goes hand in hand with "take a break"
I remember myself swiming for 7+ years and at the age of 12 after an intensive year preparing for the summer tournament in Greece my time in 200m freestyle was 2:21:00. After almost 2 months without any swimming workout my time dropped to 2:13:00.
In addition to body growth, it could also be: -overtaxed muscles from improper practice load (especially for females or anyone during puberty with male or adult-oriented coaching) -less stress, more joy in swimming -improved and more appropriate nutrition
Bold! I'm 57, quitted swimming because of traditional training 39 years ago, returned to swimming 3 years ago self-training alone, and now beat almost every personal best that I set when I was 18. 100 FL is my only 39 year-PB which I plan to beat soon. Coaching/teaching has been commonly generic for all students. For decades, students who cannot keep up with the training simply quit. Such a fail-rate has actually been very high. However, it was not an issue as coach has been successful with the remaining gifted students. Nowadays, teaching is known to be more effective the more it treats each student individually. This applies to every subject, not just sports. But that's a lot harder task for any coach/teacher. Your app introduces a new sport learning/training model that allows a lot more people to enjoy and benefit from swimming. The classical goal of winning competitions has causes swimmers to retire when they get old. But with self-satisfaction and effective self-training, they can remain in the sport forever.
Wow, so awesome to hear that you're out there crushing your goals! Thanks for sharing, and thanks for the kind words about the app. I appreciate your insights! Happy swimming :)
Oh, I have just realized how great my coach is. I was scared to try things without her during her vacation, but she told me that each km on my own is important to feel the water. Also she says after breaks usually swimmers have a break-through. And no pressure with competitions - “for now we just swim”

to be fair, my coach doesn't say any of that. Never had any coaches saying that. But maybe it's because I've been very lucky with the coaches that I've got. Still an interesting video.
The timing that I achieved during the competition was 6-8 seconds less than my timing from practice. Even though fatigue could've added a few seconds during practice, my coach was definitely adding the remaining seconds to my actual timing. 🤣 This was one such example of his lying.
You’re being too hard on your coach. I am a coach and I have never heard of a coach lying to make your time slower. They might lie to make it faster but never slower. Fact is it is difficult to hit meet times in practice. It happens but is rare. Most swimmers just swim faster in meets. I hate when my newbie swimmers (or swimmers who don’t swim much) get all excited for a meet and start coming to practice and then don’t want to train but do rehearsals of their race. They’re always baffled when they don’t come close to their meet swim and then I have to explain to them that it signifies nothing.
@@ezeqruls you may be right. My coach also might intend to maintain my humility so that I don't become overconfident just before the meet. Overconfidence can be really destructive! Whatever the case may be, I am fully convinced that my coach merely wants me to do well.

Honestly i can relate to all of these so much especially the first 2. I trained under a very “old fasioned” coach and im extremely grateful for all the time hes dedicated to us, we swam 7 times on normal weeks and 14 on ALL holidays with no breaks in a year (but of course the intensity would vary). I couldn’t improve anymore after a certain time and it was quite a big mental block for me to not see results anymore after all that hard work. But since i graduated highschool, i started swimming a lot less and actually put more attention into the quality of my self training, and focusing on technique rather than pure intensity and mileage, i cant say that im as strong of a swimmer as before but im definitely understanding swimming a lot more and wnjoying it too
I'm struggling a little with the side breathing in freestyle/front crawl! I've had a swim coach tell me to roll and look slightly behind when I turn my head but my current swim coach says not to look behind at all. Looking slightly behind is more comfortable for me though. Would be grateful for any advice! Thanks 😊.
When you rotate your torso you have your ear on your shoulder so you don't really look to the side as much and keep one goggle in the water it's called one eye breathing. Get the fins and do some one arm freestyle until you get your breathing down both sides.
My coach is the MySwimPro app. The biggest lie I was told was that water is 800x denser than air ( but to be fare, Fares did examine this in detail in a video!) Love the app!

Hello fares. thank u for this video all tho sometimes i would like to not compete and i would like to take a break on swimming sometimes for atleast a week but i can't my coach and my parents force me to join competitions and force me to keep training because of this i got fatigued and injured my time dramatically decreased so what should i do??? should i keep listening to my parents and coach?
Hi Jarred! It sounds like you're not fully enjoying swimming. You should sit down with your parents and talk about this. What would make you happiest? Just practicing? Taking a month off to consider if you want to continue? Planning out a season of competition together as a family? It's your sport and your body - find out what makes you happy!
@@FaresKsebati Yes, u guessed it im not fully enjoying swimming since it wasn't my choice i got forced to join swimming lessons for 2 years or more i talked with my parent about this already all tho they still don't listen to me and they only give me a break when i get injured but i did talk to my coach he said it's fine if u would like to take a break off swimming just do what ever that makes u happy this competitions are just for experience.
More is better. If you study other endurance sports, they all reach the same conclusion. MA is an example of how swimming too little stunts progression. The best go big: Phelps, Dressel, Ledecky
I believe it's a balance - quality with the edge over quantity. Maybe if MA did a bit more quality yardage, his 200 IM would improve. But he's proven to be a very effective 100 swimmer. However, we can assume that most of the yardage Katie Ledecky swims isn't just garbage yardage, but serves a purpose :)
This is the first I'm hearing any of these lies. Did I just get lucky? Are a lot of you actually hearing any of these from your swim coaches? Right now I'm leaning towards this was just being a click baity title.
12. If you practicing swimming you are going to lose weight 🤣 The biggest Lie ever ! 13. You will have Swimmer's body if you swim regularly. 😂 Lie. Swimmers body is build in the Gym and in the kitchen , but not in the pool 😉
You lost me on the first "lie." You need recovery days or else you'll get injured. You won't get injured from swimming "garbage yardage" if you have good technique
Train with me! ➡ coach.myswimpro.com/trainwithfares/
I started working with a personal coach and she's told me none of these. For most of them she encourages the opposite. She's the best :)

Yes! That's a better way to improve swimming performance. Learn more here: blog.myswimpro.com/2016/11/20/weight-training-before-swimming-whats-the-right-order/
11. You will build muscle more than in the gym😇🤣
I hear ya
True. I swim a mile a day. But I did not get the muscles till I got to the gym
How fast do you swim 100m freestyle
Fares tu parle français ou arabe ou juste anglais ?
The biggest lie of them all: This is the last set.
iam a swimer/gymnast/netball
Awesome as always! it wud be ok if you didn’ yell
2:03 what's her name?
More is better. If you study other endurance sports, they all reach the same conclusion. MA is an example of how swimming too little stunts progression. The best go big: Phelps, Dressel, Ledecky
I believe it's a balance - quality with the edge over quantity. Maybe if MA did a bit more quality yardage, his 200 IM would improve. But he's proven to be a very effective 100 swimmer. However, we can assume that most of the yardage Katie Ledecky swims isn't just garbage yardage, but serves a purpose :)
My coach wont let us wear suits until we have a national time
What if this coach is lying?!!
Im a level4 gymnast not really a swimmer and I don’t even know why i watched this video 😂 lol
I am the LAW.
no, my coach is perfect
This is the first I'm hearing any of these lies. Did I just get lucky? Are a lot of you actually hearing any of these from your swim coaches? Right now I'm leaning towards this was just being a click baity title.
Mac w
12. If you practicing swimming you are going to lose weight 🤣 The biggest Lie ever !
13. You will have Swimmer's body if you swim regularly. 😂 Lie. Swimmers body is build in the Gym and in the kitchen , but not in the pool 😉
Swimming is a Cardio exercise, you need to Strength training too in order to get Swimmers body and losing weight!
oof- can't wait ☠
Happy swimming :)
@@FaresKsebati thanks. same to you :)
imma commentgern oh shit nutella just fell on my phone
I just swim for fun
These “Lies” are exaggerations than actual lies since they are correct to some extents.
You lost me on the first "lie." You need recovery days or else you'll get injured. You won't get injured from swimming "garbage yardage" if you have good technique
Garbage Yardage lol
LOL equipment is cheating. Clearly those coaches aren't using drag socks or parachutes. 😂
This man ruined other coaches' life for the views.
