Thanks for watching! The shovel rake combo works great for this, leaves, cleaning up pine cones and needles under out blue spruces. I use the shovel broom combo for the garage floor and driveway, too. .
Great video! Couple questions though... What height setting did you use on your dethatcher? Would it be beneficial to rake or brush in the new seed for better soil contact? How about some top dressing for the new seed (top soil, peat moss, compost)? Planning on doing similar thing soon, so trying to find out as much as I can. Thank you!
Your lawn looks great man! Whatever else youre doing is clearly working. Wish i could have this down in GA, but grass like this doesnt do well in sand haha
I just done mine this week here in the UK, twice the portion you did, like 8mx11m and I got 15 bags of thatch. Literally every 8 footsteps stop and empty the bag. Its a new house/lawn ive recently moved too. But had same in my last house and lawn.

BUT, I also want to bring in some masonry sand to level my lawn. I’m just not sure if I should do the sand leveling before or after all of the overseeding process. Thanks in advance.

Hey man, Thanks for the video. So, I live in Colorado. We were provided a Kentucky blue grass mix sod about 5 years ago. It’s getting a little bare. Going to reseed this fall in the coming week. Would you recommend a tall fescue mix from Scott’s or ? I have the same dethatcher so I’ll mow low first then dethatch. Would you recommend applying a top dressing after overseeding like Peat Moss?
Hey Chris, I personally prefer Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass over tall fescue just because they have a similar look and size of grass blade, and can be mowed at a lower height. Tall fescue has a much wider blade and can throw off the uniform look of your lawn, but it does have good drought tolerance. I definitely recommend using peat moss over any bare areas that you seed. Thanks for watching!
This is exactly the video I needed as this is my plan for the fall here in the Chicago area. I, too, have the Greenworks thatcher. I've read it's best to do this when the soil is moderately wet. You did the opposite, so I'm curious how that worked out. My question: Did you set the Greenworks dethatcher to its most aggressive setting? I've been thinking of doing so to rough up the soil a bit for better seed-to-soil contact.
Oh, I posted in your other video. I just found out you in this video you live in Chicago. I live in Huntley. I asked earlier if it was still ok to drop TTTF seeds today. Thanks!
Hi brother. You have a nice green lawn right there. I have a question. Just by put down seed on the existing grass will germinate? It not supposed to have good seed soil contact for germination?. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for watching and good question. Dethatching clears room for the seed to fall down to the dirt level and keeps it from getting blocked by old organic matter that sits near the crown of the plant. When I water it in deeply, it drops down to the soil and germinates.
How short do you mow your lawn when overseeding? I've read most ppl go down to the lowest setting on their mower but I don't like that. I was thinking maybe 2in or 2.5 in? Also, I know bluegrass needs more water than tall fescue. How often do you water it?
Good question, I probably should have mentioned that. I mowed it at 2” a day before dethatching and overseeding. I water everyday that we don’t get rain in the summer heat. Now that it’s cooler, I give it 2 minutes in the morning and 2 in the afternoon just to keep the new seed from drying out.
Is it recommended to detach Bermuda grass around this time of the year? I’m in Arlington Texas, super hot this days. I detach back in March and lawn looked better after it. I also have irrigation system so if I detach it while is hot it should recover before it goes dormant , agree?
Yes, you want to dethatch when the grass is actively growing. If you did it already this year, you probably don’t need to do it again until next year. Summertime is the best time to dethatch bermuda.
I live in Buffalo N.Y. I just got a SunJoe dethatcher this week, would you tell me the best time of year to dethatch and overseed. Your lawn looks great!
Thank you, Mike! Dethatching should be done in the spring or fall for cool season grass like your. Overseeding is best in the fall but can also be done in the spring if needed. If you want to do both at the same time, fall is definitely best.
Good question and thanks for watching! The bag recommended setting 10 but it was coming out too fast so I moved it to 5 and that seemed just right. Any bare areas I would recommend doing by hand so you get good coverage.

Hey Leo, thanks for watching. Dethatching or leveling by topdressing should be done when your grass is growing most vigorously. I wouldn't do either on warm season grass during this time of year because it stresses out the grass and that could lead to disease when it goes to dormancy in the winter. I'd wait until early summer to dethatch and let the grass bounce back for a bit then level.

I don't aerate every year. I've gone 3 years without doing it and I can't tell any difference, honestly. I think dethatching makes a bigger difference, but that's just my opinion. Thanks for watching!
I live in Florida and have a healthy St. Augustine lawn. It seems to me that the dethatcher would do harm to the stolons that creep above the ground. If it was used on these types of grasses it seems like one would have to use a much less aggressive setting.
Hey, Greg! Yes, I agree that dethatching St. Augustine would do more damage than good. It would rip through those stolons and could kill your grass. Also, St. Aug doesn’t build up thatch the way our cool season grasses do. Thanks for watching!
You over flowed that spreader didn't you? I have the same one it hold about half that bag you cut open at the bottom. 😆 🤣 😂 😹
I most certainly did! 😂😂😂I knew someone would call me out on that move. Thanks for watching!
Let’s go white Sox!
You are a wise man, indeed! Go Sox!! Thanks for watching.

I been in business 55 yrs and own 4 gas powered dethatcher no electric one next you are using there power
Yes, this is electric but I only use it once or twice a year at the most so it makes sense for me. If I was in the business like you, I would have a gas powered dethatcher, too. Thanks for watching, Bruce!
@@lakehouselawncare1755 I bought mine as a frame and handle look on Facebook marketplace they have a few nice ones
1. Green works dethatcher works better if you move back and forth like a vacuum
2. 3 lbs of grass seed ain’t enough to do shit on that big ass lawn
Sun joe is way better no comparison here
That’s what I’ve heard. Sunjoe has the scarifier attachment.
