I remember listening to ``Out to Lunch`` for the first time around 1972 as a 19 yr old. In the liner notes he stated he was ``on his way to Europe...Because if you try to do anything different in this country, people put you down for it ``he passed away about 4 months later . Age 37.
Your feel/description for the recording is spot on. Another desert island disc. An absolute stunning record.

Hey Ken, great channel and lots of great information. I like how you speak your mind and are critical when necessary. One thing I have not noticed with your Blue Note LP reissue reviews is there is no talk of the pressing quality or lack of with these releases. I should say it's pretty inconsistent. I've noticed a considerable drop in quality control coming from RTI in recent years. I have all the music matters releases on 33 1/3 that I picked up several years ago and they are all flawless pressings. In contrast, I've had to send back many Tone Poets for replacement due to pressing errors, scratches, clicking, excessive surface noise. I think it's important for influencers reviewing these products to point this stuff out and hold the company accountable to do a better job because it is certainly possible to do so. They are much more likely to take your feedback than the average customer. Maybe you're just lucky and never received a bad pressing in this series, but that's hard to believe. We would like to hear about it and why this problem has popped up with many pressing plants over the past few years. Thanks and keep doing what you're doing!

Awesome takes on these recordings, Ken! You're pretty much the only person in the vinyl community who gives a detailed and creative voice to understanding these pressings-

  • @playbackamusicloversjourne8620

Thanks for that. I've got the Konitz/Mulligan & Hancock albums ordered.I couldn't get into the other 2. For some reason much free jazz doesn't move me. However, let me give you one recommendation I have for free jazz that blows my socks off. Henry Threadgill's Very Very Circus album Spirit of Nuff Nuff on the Black Saint label. There's a cut on there called Exacto that just blows my mind. I saw them live when they came through Victoria BC in '91 - a septet I think it was. Great free jazz concert.

    Great reviews Ken!
I was surprised by the Shorter title also. One of my favorite more out there Wayne Shorter titles (Wayne Shorter is my favorite jazz artist).
Rumor has it that Tone Poet is going to put out an even more out there Shorter title "Odessy Of Iska" which is very cool to me as I am becoming a bit more out there in my jazz tastes now.
I like the way you apply what Joe Harley had mentioned to you in your review. Gives the understanding of sound perspectives more depth. I appreciate your analyisis.
Im a cheapskate so I ordered these during the 20% off sale at BN. So I should see them by mid winter lol.
Thanks again Ken for the video on these👍🏻

Excellent video mate! Thank you SO much for doing vinyl. I am so damn tired of hearing DAC this and DAC that : )
I'd post a link to pictures of my system and collection, but either the people set their channels so you cannot post links or CZcams through it's powerful AI removes them, I'm not sure. But lovely presentation and I REALLY appreciate how you detailed how the sonics were on each album, that was great! I believe I have that Herbie Hancock and it is very good. I have almost all of his albums. I have some on the very early Liberty label (all analog of course) which sound very good, and just fairly recently I snagged the Analog Productions 2-45 LP of Headhunters which of course sounds bloody amazing.
I've been collecting vinyl for over 40 years. Like I say, I wish I could post a link to my system and collection, sorry that I can't.
Thanks again and please do keep up the excellent reviews of VINYL. Say it again... ***VINYL!!!*** :D

It may well be that the Tone Poet series may help in some way the issuance of the Classic and 80s series. That is, they may underwrite in some way issuance of the non-TP sides.

Ken, did you lose the cinder blocks? I always thought cinder blocks provide better tonality for serious audiophile listening. I’m sure Michael Fremer uses cinder blocks… Talk to JA, I’m sure Cinder blocks measure better than audio racks. Love your work man. I buy albums you recommended. Keep it up. Thanks.

I didn’t get any distortion on my Midnight Blue or Idle Moments. I was so impressed with the Midnight Blue compared to my Analogue Productions 2 disc 45 rpm that it was hard to make a case to spend any more than the €25 for the Classic. Can’t wait for my Eric Dolphy to arrive, I love that album

Well done Ken. You did a good job describing the music and the recordings. Re differences in West Coast vs East Coast….besides weather and lifestyle can we say ‘most’ of the East Coast were black guys and ‘most’ of the West Coast were white guys. Things have gotten so crazy, I don’t l know if I can even mention ANY racial observation (sadly).Re EBay burn….I always look at feedback rating and # of transactions. Most people go out of their way to be good sellers (I personally have never sold anything). A life rule: 1% of the world ruins it for the rest of the 99% decent people.

The Tone Poets are only gatefolds when there are session pictures available or if the original album was issued as a gatefold. Nothing to do with how beautiful the artwork is, that'd be subjective.

Guess that's what happened with the tune Lonely Woman on Song for my Father of Horace Silver. The mother didn't gave birth all the way through to it's child! I had to get 3 copies and gave up. Distortion and surface noise galore! A bummer for such a beautiful tune on such an iconic and classic record. Dunno, why pop them out when you know the result won't be fully satisfying? I'm not talking about producing perfect records. I know such a thing doesn't exist. But let's face it, even though this classic series is relatively affordable, for people who are on a budget (uh, yes, me for example!) getting stuck with defective LP's ain't that cool. Anyway, don't want to seem like I'm spitting in the pool cause I also got some decent copies of different titles (both on the Classic and Tone Poet series). Can't wait to ear Maiden, Out and The All seeing eye! Love those reviews Ken. Keep 'em coming, we are looking/listening! Peace!
