"Ain't Sittin up with the Dead No More" is just as classic. More-so than "Gitarzan", imo.

/seriously, funny song and the video is even better. Ray Stevens is one of the few people that can be wholesome and still be legitimately funny.
//Also, Stevens got a bit of reaction channel love from other people last year and they never seemed to be taken down. There was even a fairly legit seeming account that would reply with thanks and encouragement, which seems in line with most of what I've heard about him.

Streaking was actually a fad!!! Even the 1974 Academy Awards got in on the act, albeit unintentionally, if you get my meaning. As David Niven was presenting an award, a streaker ran on stage.
"Eric the Awful," "Gitarzan," "The Streak," "It's Me, Margaret," "Shriners' Convention" (this one's interesting because the proceeds go to the Shriner's Children's Hospitals). Pick your poison; they all tell a story, and they're all pretty funny.
Edit: One of the funniest ones I've heard is called "Sittin' Up With the Dead."

Ray Stevens has some great comedy songs. Harry the Hairy Ape, The Streak, Ahab the Arab, Along Came Jones, It's Me Again Margaret, Gitarzan and a bunch more great songs.

Omg haven't thought about this song in years. My dad's nickname for me was "Squirrel" and he said I was like the squirrel in the song.
Ray Stevens is a LEGEND !!! He had one serious song & that was in 1970, and it is "Everything is beautiful" and I encourage you to react to that one.
He has several gospel songs as well as comedy. He still is making songs today.
He had other serious songs. Marion Michael Morrison is another serious song, while Help Me Make It Trough The Night starts serious and waxes comical.

I've never figured out if Ray is a comedian that sings, or a singer that does comedy. He has dozens of these humorous songs/videos. The first one I was introduced to, in the 70s, was The Streak. He does a bunch of good ones.

Pascagoola is a real town in Mississippi. Ray did comedy pop songs in the 60s and 70s ('Asab the Arab,' 'Guitarzan,' 'Harry the Hairy Ape,' 'Haunted House') and transitioned to country by the 80s. 'Kiss a Pig' is one of my favorites.

To hear his true singing voice give a listen to "Everything is Beautiful". It is a serious and very pretty song. But yes "The Streak" is his funniest IMO.

I was holding back tears while watching because Ray Stevens was my Grandpa's favorite and I love seeing that he's now considered classic comedy music rather than just being forgotten. Do a search on Ray Stevens in CZcams. I really think you'd enjoy his songs. The Streak was #1 in the US back in 1974. The Deep South (Alabama, Mississippi, east Texas) is very religious, where it's pretty much taken for granted that you go to a church. He likes to poke fun at the church culture. Alabama and Mississippi are still very secluded, so you'd be amazed how many local dialects sound British back from when we were colonies. Pascagoula is a real town in Mississippi. He likes to sing about Yazoo City, which is also real.

To give you context for his song The Streak, 1974 in the US was known as "The year of the streak" or the streaker. Thankfully it was a short-lived fad where a guy or even a group of guys would strip naked and go running (streaking) out in public. I'm not joking! They would even do it at big sporting events. Have no idea what started it, but I was just glad when it ended! At the college my brother attended (in small-town Kansas of all places), 50 guys streaked passed a girl's residence hall! On one page of the yearbook, the top half of the page is a photo from hip up of graduates in dignified cap and gown solemnly walking one direction. But the bottom half is all men's bare legs running the other way!

Me Again Margaret…the streak…guitarzan…. You could actually do a ray Steven’s series! 😂🤣 I grew up with my daddy playing these for us and we all laughed so much! Lol. And to this day we quote these songs all the time, for instance, we will answer the phone saying it’s me again Margaret, or someone will hollar don’t look Ethel! Years and years of fun from these little songs. Enjoy!

Ray, himself, has posted his approval of the cover. Tim Foust, of course, is Home Free's bass who can narrate a sing-song story with the best of them. You, Mr. Beesley, have already reacted to Home Free -- you need to visit them again! Meanwhile, Ray Stevens was and is a genius songwriter and comedian!

This is all in fun. Mississippi is in the middle of the Bible Belt. Pascagoula, the town mentioned in this song, is on the Gulf Coast in South Mississippi.

Ray Stevens was very popular with his comedic novelty songs. He and his band also won a Grammy for a countryfied cover of Misty, which was actually more like a warm up song to kill time while waiting for the engineer to resume recording. Somebody important heard them and the track got polished up and released.
Misty would be a good one for you to review, just so you can hear for yourself how good they really were.
