    The beat up buffer is caused by the buffer slamming into the retainer. This is likely a result of them drilling the retainer hole slightly too far to the rear. This causes the buffer to not rely on the back end of the bolt carrier group to stop its forward travel. Instead, the retainer is what is limiting the forward travel of the buffer. This will cause the retainer to fail prematurely by shearing off the tip of it and then it will be floating around in your rifle somewhere, probably in the fire control group. It'll also chew through the buffer itself causing weird wear on the inside of the buffer tube. You can confirm this by shotgunning the rifle and then closing it slowly while watching the back of the bcg to ensure that slight pressure against the face of the buffer is maintained throughout the entire closure. The back of the bcg should slightly depress the buffer spring when it is fully closed.
    Had this problem on one of my 308 builds. Solutions are to either fill the hole and re-drill it in the right location or find a slightly longer bcg.

      You are correct sir. Many people don't realize the buffer should not contact the retainer when the weapon is assembled and functioning. Those marks are a sign that something is out of spec.

    • @roflchopter11
      @roflchopter11 Pƙed 3 lety +13

      Other solutions are captive buffer spring or just delete the retainer.

      @@roflchopter11 that's actually what I ended up doing. Got a silent capture spring, cut the top off the included plastic spacer thingy for the a2 style tube, threw in behind the silent capture spring, and fixed.

      Tyler Robles I’ve heard some issues over the long term with captured buffer springs. Sprinco for me all day!
      It can be hard to diagnose exactly what is out of spec in this instance. Could very well be that everything is at the low end of “in spec”, but stacking against each other is what’s causing the issue. Could be a short bolt, short carrier, out of spec locking lugs, etc.
      First thing I would do is swap BCG and eliminate that.

      @@danieldotter6077 you are correct about the spec stacking problem. Curious as to the bad stories you've heard about silent capture systems. I've put probably 10000 rounds through my various rifles with the jp silent capture springs but never had a problem.

    I have that same Handguard in which Im using in the same configuration. To make the handguard tighter I tapped the hole in the bottom of the barrel nut and drilled out the hole in the bottom of the HG and used a larger cap screw. Now the HG is solid and it only took about 10 minutes of work and a trip to Ace hardware to get a new screw while I was getting other things. This was the only HG I could find in stock at the time to fit a suppressor under. It was cheap and it’s fairly light.

    I bought a Radical 16 inch upper back in like 2014/2015 and mated it with a PSA blemished lower, to this day it still shoots great, and still is louder than piss with the zero impulse break or whatever it's called. The only thing I've had to replace so far is gas rings on the PSA bolt. Radical isn't DD, but mine has worked well for me both recreation shooting as well as duty. It has been replaced by a DD 10.3 MK18 upper and Aero lower though ;)

    Fantastic review man. Absolutely thorough and everything I would want to check myself if I were buying and then some! How often do you get to check the groups and suppression ability on a weapon before you buy it. Thank you for this. Interesting that they didn’t stake the castle nut, maybe so we have the option to add an ASAP plate or something? Then we can stake it ourselves maybe? When building my own I use purple or blue loctite and then stake but that’s just me.

    I'm actually running Radical's MHR handguard on my Stag upper. It's very similar to Stag's SL Quad handguard, but with two important differences: it has a QD swivel hole on the front rails, and it hard-indexes to the barrel nut via a threaded screw. It also cost quite a bit less. Given I like to run with a lightweight bipod, I wanted those dedicated rails at the front.
    You can always upgrade to a Gemtech bolt carrier to reduce how overgassed it is.

    Bought a radical upper in 2016. In just a couple of outings the handguard bolts stripped out of the barrel nut. I emailed them asking for the size of the screws because I was just going to buy longer ones. They just sent me new barrel nut and screws for free. (longer screws too) I wasn't impressed with the finish or build quality. But was impressed by their customer service. I got this rifle to shoot my 190 and 220 subsonic ammo. Needless to say it short cycles and even when putting lighter spring and buffer it will cycle a few times before short cycle again. Their gas block set up sucks, it doesn’t have enough gas to properly cycle subs. You’d think it would be tuned at the factory. There is no way to adjust the gas block other than removing the compression pin in it and opening up that hole. Did all that and still have a $1300 integrally suppressed 300 blackout that only functions correctly with supers
.not that quiet when the supersonic crack echoes.

    Is the increased chamber volume in this silencer worth the disposal replacement cost once the barrel wears out vs a standard can you could install on a new barrel? You said it is gassy and while OSS is $1k, others at $500 range would be the comparison. Laws change but current day with pistol braces im leaning toward separate silencer. Have a used radical upper I recently purchased and looks fine, rail is too thin where gas block strikes in recoil, many brands do this like Troy Midwest etc.

      - MPI is not full proof. The cracks have to be deep or long enough to be detected. MPI bolts have prematurely broken.

    In 300 BLK, I wonder how it compares too Daniel Defense's ISR. I was just...JUST about to buy that DDM4ISR in anticipation for hog hunting 2022 (dang tax stamp). Now, with Covid, I can't find 300BLK rounds for any price. I am not going to buy a new caliber rifle if I can't buy ammuntion for it. I guess I am back to researching and comparing...ugh. So I wonder how might this Radical Firearms compare to the Daniel Defense. I really like DD as I own three 5.56 variants already. However, I am NOT crazy at how expensive they are and their ISR is especially unique and therefore godawful expensive. It's not the cabliber I was really looking for in an ISR and hog gun, but Radical Firearms does make it in .223 and I do already have plenty of that ammo. I hate to "settle" but who knows when specialty* rounds like 300BLK will be back in circulation again.

      Yes, there can be. It all depends on the baffle design. I actually got a bore snake stuck in my Sig SUR300 upper because the baffles are angled and sharp enough to catch and shred the boresnake. Since the tube inst supposed to be installed upside down, the builder had some trouble and decided to hammer the gas block into place leaving hammer marks on the barrel. I ended up getting a Hornady hot tub sonic cleaner for my Sig SUR300 because the baffles shredded the boresnake to the point it got stuck in the can. The Hornady hot tub is designed to be able to throw the whole upper in it.

      I've had my upper mated to a PSA lower for a few years now. Right off the bat I had to send it back to them as the seal at the receiver end blew out sending hot gas back. Radical sent me a 2 day fed Ex label and in a week I had it back repaired and no issues since with that but the gas block screw did come loose. I re-torqued it at their recommended 28 in lbs. I had no issues in the buffer end like he did but I did replace it with a silent capture anyway.

    • @bobvagene
      @bobvagene Pƙed 3 lety +3

      It was metering at 136ish at the muzzle. 140db is hearing safe for single impact noise. I suspect it is louder at the ear but still pretty close. I wouldn't run it all day without ear pro but it probably wouldn't be painful to shoot without. 5.56 is hard to suppress, those numbers on a 10.5" barrel are damn near as good as you'll get.

    • @bobvagene
      @bobvagene Pƙed 3 lety

      @Bruh Fu yes, but it's done by using ports (holes) in the actual chamber/barrel lead area to bleed off enough gas to make a supersonic 9mm into subsonic. So technically when it leaves the barrel it's effectively a subsonic round. Similar to how most standard 22lr is supersonic but if you run it in a pistol it will typically not gain enough velocity to break the sound barrier.

    I appreciate your comprehensive clear and detailed reviews you are one of the most trusted reviewers on youtube. That being said I am getting tired of you using the term Plandemic and other terms dismissing and diminishing global. I have lost a person I care about to this pandemic, and I think you need to consider how you would react if some one under cut the Iraq war and the people you know who you lost there and there live they never got a chance to return to. This has killed more american than all middle eastern conflicts and the Vietnam ware combined by disparaging it you are disparaging the people who have died to this disease and shaming the families that have lost loved ones to it. Pleased refrain from politicizing this issue that is impacting so many people regardless of there 2A beliefs. Otherwise great review as always thank you for the work you do in testing and providing insight into all things firearms relate.

      You lost ONE person you care about and insist on calling this a pandemic? It doesn’t even meet the criteria by their own phony numbers! If this was a real pandemic you should know dozens of people who died. (I know zero, and I work in healthcare even!)
      The predictions were completely made up and absolutely ridiculous, the deaths and “CASESđŸ˜Č” are at least 50% fraudulent, the lockdowns and closures are naked TYRANNY, and the masks and anti-social distancing is more tyranny, especially of the conditioning and conformity type. All GARBAGE. Evil, stupid, garbage.
      People die. That SUCKS, but it’s part of life. More people die of diarrhea every year. More people die of Tuberculosis every year. And that’s if you take the “official” numbers at face value, which at this point would make someone dumber than an earthworm.
      Mike didn’t politicize it. The politicians and the media politicized it. Mike’s 100% right to call this farce exactly what it is.
      (And by the way, you should mock and berate the immoral, illegal, unconstitutional, murderous “war on terror,” no matter who died in it. It’s pure evil.)
