  • In this Mahner Farms video, i decided to take you all inside our old defunct Dairy Barn and give you a detailed tour including the history of this building. Our family has been farming this land for 154 years, but this barn has only been here since 1969. My Grandfather and then my Father ran this Dairy farm from 1969 until 2005 when we sold the cows and moved away.
Now, I am working on restoring the farm so that i can someday work the land that has been in our family for so long. And, a big part of that, is this Old Barn. So, i thought it made sense to document what it looks like right now, after years of neglect. We've already started restoring it, but there is a long way to go, and it will be VERY expensive, so i do not know if we will ever get finished, but either way, we now have a record of what it looks like in 2024.

This makes me even more excited to see the transformation process of the whole barn being restored.

I'm glad you think so, because a lot of my work in the next few years is likely to be fixing this barn.

I love a good old barn tour. Well done. Interesting as always.

On the bright side, even though fixing this barn will be expensive and time consuming, it's not too far gone.

Yeah, hopefully we can do everything but the roof ourselves.

Why do you call your hayloft a mow? Is it a Wisconsin thing? I occasionally miss our old dairy barn. Then I hear stories like yours and chuckle... Nope, the barn is gone and that's fine. I see its exterior tongue & groove boards inside our house on the walls, everyday. Our barn was considerably older and slightly smaller. We kept the horse stalls in it until the bitter end. Best of luck with your repairs.

I do not know. It could be a regional thing. The area i am from is mostly German immigrants, at least the farming communities, and that's pretty much exclusively what it is called around here. But younger generations, and people further south in Wisconsin call it a hay loft.
Haymow is just a more generalized term. A hay loft is always above the main section of a barn, but a haymow can either by above the barn, or a dedicated room within the barn.

Hi, very good video, I was wondering if you were going to restore this barn for storage or to put cows back in?
This video brought back many memories of my youth where when I was younger I also grew up on a dairy farm which is now closed...Since that day I have always dreamed of restoring one of its old abandoned barns, this building has so many stories that it must not be left to rot. When I can afford it, I will buy one of these dairy barns and put it back into service.

I have hope that at some point i will have animals in this barn again. I do not know in what capacity, but that is also my hope. Small dairy farms are a huge part of the heritage of Wisconsin, and i would like to preserve our last barn in that spirit.

Wow, the redone dormers really look out of place on that barn now. That's the unfortunate thing about upgrading things incrementally.

They sure do. I was standing down in the yard the other day thinking that exact thing.

It's sad that Wisconsin has lost all its small dairy farms. Most of the farmers I knew fell into that first category. The older generation of farmers made farming such a miserable experience, that their kids left the farm as soon as they could, and never came back.

It's sad, but that's what happens when you mismanage a farm that bad, especially if you also aren't a good parent.

Yeah, the kids doing all the labor was always going to fail. But, you couldn't tell boomers that.

Nope, like in all cases, they knew everything, and thought it would all work out perfect for them.
