Newborn Sleep Tips: Active Sleep vs Quiet Sleep

  • Knowing the difference between quiet sleep and active sleep will save you some zzz’s during the newborn stage!
Every time my babies fussed during their sleep I would pick them up. Even though they weren’t crying, I assumed they were frustrated and wanted to be held. Little did I know they were in a state of active sleep and I was waking them up when I did that!
There is a power to the pause when it comes to newborn sleep. If your baby isn’t crying and doesn’t seem to be in distress, give it a minute before picking them up. They may be in an active sleep cycle!
I wish this was something I learned about sooner! My 4th baby sleeps so much better than my other three and I know a lot of that has to do with me not disturbing his sleep when he is in an active cycle!

I always understood to wait a minute or two before rushing to the baby when they fuss a little, but I never knew a baby fussing in their sleep could be so noisy and ACTIVE! My babies are LOUD active sleepers. They move A LOT and make lots of little noises. When I would hear them do this I assumed they were up, uncomfortable, frustrated, mad, and wanted to be picked up. I never realized they were still asleep and picking them up was actually waking them! How about you??

I'm still just 36 weeks pregnant with her, but no matter where I put her down for night sleep or naps, she will be fine because I'll literally always be right next to my little girl. We have a cradle and twin bed in her room rn and in mine and my husband's room, we'll be in our queen and keeping a bedside bassinet in there with us whenever she sleeps in our room. If I want, I can even bring the bassinet into the living room and sleep on the couch while she naps in her bassinet. I even have a pack and play I could use to let her nap if I really want. The baby wont have any neglect, being alone, or rejections feelings and provide healthy relationships with other people. It looks like a simple thing but plays actually a huge role. I'm so confused by this lol. You didn't know that people of all ages move around while sleeping? You can clearly see they aren't awake, and that once picked up you're the one waking them up.
This had to have caused issues with them being constantly woken up once they go into deep sleep.

I try to know as much I could ABT babies from the grandma's the aunties cousin neighbors everyone.. and one most important thing I could say I learnt too.. was to train him to sleep with noise... Cuz it's not always going to be quiet... That was really helpful.. he would sleep with the music.. with carpenter hammer anything.. and he would sleep soundly...!
