And the situation has escalated exponentially just in the last 12 months beyond beyond anything it's ever been since the war 'ended'. They now have nukes and also have missiles that threaten the US mainland, so there is much incentive to get something done and stop the 'strategic patience'.
There were lots of allies but let's be real here, the US did 90% of the work. It was the only nation that stayed behind afterwards and protected South Korea. South Korea has only become a strong nation in the past 2-3 decades. The US has had extensive meetings with South Korea and Japan on this summit. What do these nations have in common with the US? They're the only ones North Korea is threatening to nuke and has been lobbing missiles towards. It's absurd to say the United Nations, or any of the other former allies in the Korean war, have any skin in the game these days. The US has tens of thousands of troops in South Korea. We are also the only ally who is still close with the South Korean military. If war breaks out, tens of thousands of Americans will once again die there. Prior contributions in the Korean war are obviously great but let's not be confused about who has the most at stake, by far. I will be surprised if anything comes out of this. I don't think either side will be getting what they want. All I'm saying is that I'm open to the possibility and don't actively root against my country and 'world peace' in general. And though I do not like Trump and did not vote for him I do think this is an option worth trying. I think there's the possibility that Kim used the nuclear program as a means of securing power and legitimization within his own country, and that perhaps he realizes that he's got another 50 years or so ahead of him and that the status quo just will not last that long. What do you forsee? What is your suggestion? More 'strategic patience' while they increase capability? This country's leadership has no problem being sanctioned and their citizenry have shown little hope of overthrowing their government due to bad conditions. If his father was in power this whole scenario would obviously be laughable. And maybe he has 100% the same intentions and it would not surprise me a bit. Citizens from Malaysia and Singapore spent hours at the land customs since the past week for this summit, 4 rejected entry to the country.
