    • @Vermonstered
      @Vermonstered Před 6 měsíci +206

      @@squirrelpatrick3670 Uhm, have you watched short track speed skating before? A lap is less than 10 seconds. If she shoots off and you don't chase and she reattaches to the pack you have almost no chance. Second is the coaches have boards to give info, it's ultimately a massive fail forgetting there's two Chinese skaters and not counting down the laps.

  • @jasonluong3862
    @jasonluong3862 Před 4 měsíci +161

    In case you are confused, here's the trick. When the announcement came on saying that this is the final lap, it was meant for the leading skater who was then the "last" in the pack. However, the other skaters thought the message was meant for the entire pack, causing them to go on a mad dash to complete the final lap. When these tricked skaters crossed the what they thought was the finish line, they actually had one more lap to go, but they all slowed down thinking the race was over with one of them the winner. The real winner was the Chinese skater behind them all. This benefited the other Chinese skaters who kept on maintaining the speed to finish 2nd place. To ensure the real leader sells this trick, he/she has to make the complete loop ahead early in the race. This gives the rest of the skaters more time to forget that they are actually trailing the leader. It’s a risky strategy because by exerting too much energy to get 1 complete loop ahead, that skater risks the chance of expending too much strength to maintain the stamina to stay ahead of the pack, resulting the rest of the pack catching up. Stamina is just as important as speed in these long-distance races.

    Important context that's easy to miss, they have to do 14 laps. not the 3-4 that you see in track sports. I imagine it must be very easy to lose count, especially when they're focused on their performance, they're really relying on the announcer to count laps for them.

      @sabinrawr Před 6 měsíci +27

      I'm not in the sport but I do have experience with a variety of collegiate and professional athletics. Consider this as only an educated guess.
      Based on what I know about runners, it is often prudent to start with a pace that you know you can maintain throughout the event. This allows the athlete to better gauge when to turn on the proverbial jets in order to maximize the chances of winning. If you know you'll be exhausted after a 100m sprint, you may want to save it for the last 99.9m. Let's compare that with jogging. When a runner is fresh, a 1km jog doesn't require too much expenditure; when exhausted, that same 1km is grueling and difficult. In theory, it's the same distance in the same amount of time, but that's generally not how muscles work. This is especially true when those muscles are pushed to their limit.
      If you've ever done a really tough leg day at the gym, you might remember walking like a groaning penguin the next day. In theory, walking is just walking, but in reality it's much easier when you're fresh than when you've already taxed your muscles to their limits.
      If a skater could maintain a sprint pace start to finish, surely they'd just do that. But given the option between run-jog and jog-run, the smart athlete will choose the latter.
      With the short sprint at the start, this racer gambled that she would have to push a little harder for the rest of the jog and would still have enough energy to maintain that lead (perhaps as a result of the deception) during the final sprint.

    • @mashy0001
      @mashy0001 Před 5 měsíci +15

      @@sabinrawr In short track speed skating it's all about drafting and sprinting, not so much about managing pace to set a time.
      This is a 1500m race, so far closer in concept to a Keirin track cycling race than anything from running. The far higher speeds involved in speed skating and track cycling (compared to running) means that aerodynamics plays a much larger role because frontal air resistance is proportional to speed squared.
      The skater who breaks the pace first and leads the race at the front has to make all their own speed, while the others can follow behind in the slipstream and save their energy for a sprint at the end.
      The flip side is that the skater who does break the pace first can occasionally catch the others by surprise and make a large enough gap that the others will have to chase them down without getting a slipstream.
      But who is to lead the group behind in chasing the leader? If they pull hard and lead they will not have much left for the sprint at the finish, so it's not really a surprise that it was one of the Korean skaters who started the chase - perhaps with thinking that working together maximised their chances of salvaging a good result.
      In Elite competition you'll see a number of different variations on the tactics as well, as opposed to the reactive thinking and low tactical awareness of most of the skaters in this Youth Olympics race. But they'll learn from this.
      Track cycling takes this to a whole different level with the Points Race and Madison formats where the race is won by accumulating points rather than the order across the finish line. 5-3-2-1 points are available to the first four riders in the sprint every 10 laps, but 20 points is awarded to a rider who can break away and lap the field.

    Short Track Speed Skater here, the officials FUCKED up. When I race and there are people on different laps, the officials in the centre and/or the lap counter will tell the skaters however many laps they have left. The bell will still go off when the person in first crosses the line for their final lap, but the other lapped skaters will be told however many laps are left for them.

    This is the epitome of why most sports are so hindered nowadays and winners arent representatives of the best.
    Most sports have fallen into a malaise where people are merely playing down to the competition instead of doing their best.
    Ice skating shows it best. The entire group normally just mosies around the rink until someone is declared winner.. It's so bad that when a person actually races to something close to their full capacity, it somehow becomes them "tricking" the other racers. 😅😅 Going fast is such a trick 😂

      I dont watch ice skating but does it have to do with drafting? Most running races have pacers in front to keep heats fast. Cycling doesn't have this because if you lap the field then the last lap becomes everyone's last lap. The field doesn't have to come around again.

    • @dokwalk
      @dokwalk Před 6 měsíci +1

      @AustinZahm Interesting thought. Yeah thats how motocross works too. If a racer gets lapped, they dont keep racing once the checkered comes out.
      I'm pretty sure they take advantage of drafting when they can. But, that kinda goes into what my main point is. The focus on one specific aspect (drafting/saving energy) hinders the actual performance. Basically, i know theres reasons to stay in the group like that. But, the sport has devolved into that instead of just going out and racing your best.
