People are crazy about fireworks and I can't comprehend why. I get it, taking away "traditions" may seem invasive, bad. But... it's not even that much of a tradition. And for god's sake it's just some loud annoying noises and lights, is it really that much more important than respecting the wildlife and not behaving like egocentric apes. There are already so many things we're sacrificing for our convenience and entertainment, and yet people can't let go of those stupid fireworks...

It's because people already know but they like to forget it out of convenience. When someone reminds them they feel bad and they don't like feeling bad and changing their behaviour is too hard so they just become mad at the person who reminded them and causes that feeling in the first place.

I don't think it's bad that Maya is picking her new therapist based on the college they went to, however I don't think acceptance rate is the best metric. Sure you could keep acceptance rate in mind while rating your therapist, but I think its probably better to check if the school they went to has a good psychology program. I only say this cause some schools have a lot of shitty programs but are good for one or two specific fields.
this is actually a really good point! not all “top level” colleges have top programs for every degree. many colleges actually have very different programs that they particularly excel in, like everyone has a niche they’re really good at
At the end of the day it doesn't matter if they go to a top rated college or not so top rated if they're a good therapist they're a good therapist.
Yea, the only metric that might work at all is the percentage of students who pass whatever licensure exam after graduating. But.. whatever..
People in finance have told me that ivy league schools are a joke(anecdotal of course), and some of the dumbest people they've ever met came through them just because they had connections

I have always been diagnosed with ADHD but recently I found that my medicationi was actually making signs of depression to the point I was feeling bipolar but apparently it's really common for ADHD and depression to be tied together so it's been such a world of difference treating both. Good luck to qt on her recovery 🎉

ADHD and autism definitely have some overlapping symptoms, which is why QT may feel like she's on the spectrum. But also very possible to have both

It's actually insane that they would take reservations that close to closing if they're going to be mad at people staying a bit past closing.
Definitely think there was a “he had a bad day” effect, especially if (since it’s LA) a lot of people who are asshole big shots come in and boss you around with zero consideration. You can’t even do anything because they will make your life a living hell with your manager. So instead someone who’s clearly more timid comes in and does something wrong, if you don’t have good anger management techniques you might just take it out on them cause you know they won’t do anything about it. Kinda sad even if it doesn’t excuse it.
Yeah I guess it's crappy/greedy management (wanting people to come in until last minute), but then with downsides and overwork pushed onto floor staff 🙃

In Germany, private fireworks on New Years Eve were illegal to avoid larger groupings during Covid and I have never had such a nice NYE. My dog wasn’t freaking out for once and the next morning, the streets weren’t trashed. I was really hoping they wouldn’t re-allow it but at least it opened a nation wide conversation about fireworks

On the QT autism topic - it turns out a combination of trauma, neurodivergence, and depression have similar effects/outcomes/symptoms as autism and there are already many similarities between it and ADHD so it's difficult to determine on behavior alone (especially for women). But she could just be mildly on the spectrum plus as an adult she could just be used to masking, but it could also explain A LOT. She could always try the autism test and talk to other autistic people about it.
as an autistic woman i dont think qt is autistic, neurodivergencies overlap a lot and a lot of what she described could be caused by ocd, adhd, or trauma. also she is a hypochondriac so she could be just convincing herself of a new diagnosis
There is no such thing as mildy autistic. That's a harmful thing to say but I'll take it as miseducated which is fine. Autism is a spectrum, it's not linear. People aren't mild autistic or severe, we are all equally autistic. However there are different support needs and some people are higher or lower support needs.
@@NeuroLifting I'm aware of the spectrum but I did use mildly nonchalantly. Either way the point is she probably isn't autistic and there's just some overlap.

If Maya feels any better, she talked me out of ever doing fireworks again with her take on it. I'd never thought how bad it was for wildlife until she tweeted that. Not like it isn't obvious, just that I hadn't thought of that.

My wife went though over half a dozen antidepressants before she found one that worked, and it actually ended up being a combination of 2. Going on and off of them is really tough too.
I have done the exact same thing with pocket frogs! had it on my iPod touch then remembered it randomly and then became obsessed recently, just a simple little masterpiece, all my froggies are so cute so I never wanted to get rid of them to free up space
11:50 Being at a good school definitely isn't the best metric for a therapist, Once you hit a particular bar (like an okay state school) there really is no difference in the quality of education.
I think after that bar the experience is different but it's mostly up to the student to make use of what the school offers. Which is why you can't judge only by the school. Perhaps you can prefer someone who went to a certain type of school? But it wouldn't be a metric to judge them as a psychologist, yes.
@@nmx0014 In my experience transferring from a decent state school to the state flagship, the only real difference was the research output. The actual education also at times felt better at my old school since there wasn't the risk of having a prof who hates teaching and only wants to do research

yeah I always feel so weird about all the fireworks. My sister worked at a state park and she noticed that during veterans day and 4th of july there are a lot of veterans who try to camp or get a cabin there (since for wildlife they have a no firework rule). And the veterans were saying just how much PTSD and bad the fireworks were for them so they always try to get away from it all

Finally Maya made me feel like a not crazy person on the fireworks issue, I'm from the UK and whilst not July 4th we have a national 'firework night' and November 5th. It's so horrible to all animals, and I don't get the appeal anyway.
Every year I sign the petitions to make them illegal or at least the loud ones to be illegal (there are quiet ones too but they’re more expensive than normal ones)
I'm Europe-based and we're using fireworks only during New Year, but there are still petitions and fights over this topic... and actually, I think this year there were some big cities that didin't do "main" fireworks in respect to animals (and I guess it would be cheaper), so there's at least this. However, changing individuals' mind is something I consider impossible
I just personally think you shouldn't have this take unless you're vegan. It's weird to take a stance on loud noises being mean to animals if you're still eating them.
Also whether or not you get the appeal doesn't matter

As a former restaurant employee we do hate when people stay past closing, but we'd never kick them out like that. It was more passive aggressive where we'd just clean around them or offer a box when the check was given

So re: Qt bringing up ADHD and Autism, most ppl tend to have rly bad/limited understandings about what those conditions are like. Like, the way ppl imagine can be what they're like for *some* people, but both disorders are like crazy broad and can manifest SUPER differently in different people (which actually is probably true of most disorder). Anyways, those two in particular have a LOT of overlap, like over 50% overlap in some studies, so if your therapist thinks you have one, you could have both, or you could have a version of ADHD that's closer to Autism than average, or something else ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I read a neuroscience article recently showing that people with a wide range of mental health problems all showed signs of reduced "synaptic pruning" which is a way the brain gets rid of connections it doesn't need to be more efficient and devote more energy to connections it actually uses.

Had neighbors that where very into fireworks each year. Was awesome to me as a kid, but I remember the cops getting called once and them threating to poison the dog of the person that called them.
For QT's "cucumber" state 😅 : ADHD affects the brain's executive function. That means it's harder for individuals to process information and make choices based on that information. This is how ADHD paralysis occurs - when you can't decide what to do or where to start, you can't take action. Its also a symptom in anxiety disorders

Just a reminder! Fireworks can also be incredibly triggering to veterans and people who served our country, the people we should theoretically be celebrating on the fourth. And now a days fireworks are not only on the fourth but weeks before and after, so can send people into days of flashbacks to the most triggering moment in their life. (Fireworks are not only triggering to veterans!) There are so many other ways we can celebrate than things that will harm all different manners of animals, the importance of Fourth of July is to be able to hang out with friends and family and to remember where we came from. If you are going to participate in fireworks please try to keep it to only the fourth, and be incredibly safe and aware of where you are Lightning them, and take proper safety precautions.

QT, if you do have ADHD, and ADHD meds are compatible with you, everything will improve. Your brain will let you prioritise, that’ll help ease anxiety and help you sleep better. Please do get checked coz personally the second I heard my diagnosis, it felt like life made sense and a boulder was lifted off my chest

Hello QT, A lot of individuals with autism and or ADHD have polymorphisms related to serotonin which would result in low satisfaction, depression, sleep issues etc. The thing that helped me the most non drug is adequate vitamin D intake and fairly high dose of omega 3 (3g) both are required for synthesis and regulation of serotonin. You mentioned struggling to take supplements and not sure what your diet is like but the demand for omega 3 in particular might be higher then the avg person.
Do you mean comorbidities rather than polymorphisms?

Maya, since therapists have to get advanced degrees they could go to two separate schools with different acceptance rates. They could have gone to a 80% rate for undergrad and Stanford for grad school, so it might be misleading. I would say if you want to rank, I'd find out what "school of thought" or main techniques your previous therapist used and use that to look for a new one. This could include therapists that use CBT, the Alderean school of thought, Holistic techniques, mindfulness, EMDR etc. This might be more useful finding a therapist that is most similar to what you're comfortable with. You should be able to see all this info on Psych Today.

If there are community guidelines against animals swimming in the pool. That would be the only Scenario when they could be upset. Because it is a community pool and if the community apartment complex, or whatever they live in, allows animals and does not have a restriction against animals in the pool than nobody can be upset about it. If you want it to change, then you bring it up to the community board or the owners of the community you live at.
I also feel like there was a weird unaddressed escalation. People can be weird, so I don’t think it’s impossible the dog owners just brought up the poster’s kids, but the fact that the poster seemed more upset about the comparison than surprised implies to me that the poster was being an asshole about things regardless of whether or not they were in the right according to the community pool rules.
