  • How to Test Your Lawn Soil
    Lawn soil testing is easier than you think. Take a few minutes to watch this video, you can do the same sample collection in minutes with nothing more than a garden spade. Drop your sample in the mail, receive results and product recommendations.
    There is some debate as to what sample kit (lab) uses the best analytical methods, returning most accurate data. I've used MySoil before and wanted to compare "oranges" with "oranges," rather than move to another sample kit.
    I've included links below to products I used in this video and also a few alternatives (sample kits, labs etc...).
    My next video will will share sample results as well as a 2021/2022 comparison. I'm especially interested to see if my 2021 pH adjustment apps had any effect.

    Just did my brothers today and will do my front and back tomorrow. We are almost there. My back yard seems to be getting greener around the edges of pavers. Excited to get back outside. .

      I’m with ya. My snowbells popped up this week with flowers. Looking forward to getting out to. Will see if the Magi-Cal apps had any impact on pH.

    Hey Russ,
    Just got hit with about 10” snow here in upstate NY so soil test has to wait a bit. I ordered YardMastery soil test kit as well. Looking forward to future videos.

      Thanks Thurston, nice to hear from you. I was in Mass end of January when the bigger storm rolled through. Days. Are getting longer ☀️

      Yes really curious to see if my pH moved. I know I’ll need to continue apps to maintain or continue moving it.

      Yes my ground was not super soft but good enough to pull plugs. See what analyses shows.

    Hey Russ,
    Getting ready for spring lawn work here in Upstate NY. Question-I’m a fan of Barricade DG as I know you are. I did an overseed in the early fall (Sept) and in December did Barricade app. I want to reseed some thin areas as well as apply pre-emergent but know I can’t. Tenacity is alternative but prefer longer protection. Have you ever seeded in the spring? What are your recommendations? I can spot seed and not apply pre- emergent in those areas.

    • @LawnJourneys
      @LawnJourneys  Před 2 lety +2

      Thurston: First off always nice of you to say hi! I think you already have the answers too 😀 As you already know; Prodiamine is a preemergent only while Dithiopyr is both a pre-emergent and post emergent, both will knock out any spring grass seeding. I only seed bad areas in the spring and also avoid hitting those spots wit pre-emergents. While I have never done a mass spring overseed, mostly because KBG likes cooler weather to get up and going (it will germinate and grow in the spring), its not that people don't or can't do it. If you have a lot of spring seeding to do in some areas then I would also implement the plan you suggested and use Tenacity (mesotrione) in those areas. Mesotrione has both pre and post emergent properties but does not have the staying power that Prodiamine or Dithiopyr have. HOWEVER, I wouldn't sweat it , if you need to get some spring seeding in, use the Mesotrione and let it roll. I think your plan is good for weed prevention in the spring seed area. Mesotrione attacks other weeds, in addition to crabgrass so makes sense to use it since it will not attack germination of grass seed. Let me know how big an area your seeding and how the Mesotrione works. Russ
