I remember a detail from about 1970 - a bit of graffiti on the retaining wall by Fratton Bridge from our highly-educated bovver community. It read, proudly...
'PORTMOTH BOT BOYS'
😂😂😂 that sums it up perfectly
Been pointed in your direction by a friend. I'm looking at building in a spare room along a 12 foot wall and an 8 foot wall in 4x 4 foot sections. On inverted L shaped board(s). Loosely based on P&S (town station), along Canal Walk to Fratton then round the bend towards Hilsea. Which then loops back on the wall sides to P&S - Hopefully to the High level platforms, but the lower platforms will be fitted in too. I'm a Pompey boy most of my life (dont do footy tho), born in Paulsgrove, now living a stones throw West of St Mary's Church. Only watched this one video of yours so far, but I got a couple of hours free this afternoon.
AHH, thank you for watching! I'm not into football either 😂 sounds like it will be a good length of track!
Apologies in advance as I'm in the middle of moving, so the layout has been taken down. Ill be building the portscreek bridge for my new home so I'm still keeping it Portsmouth! Hope you enjoy the rest of the videos
Great to see an layout that has juice rails, i drove 51s, 57s and 63s learnt 455/6 s and later on 465/6s networkers for network southeast, (only passenger trains, never freight). Also some modellers have put drivers in cabs and passengers in coaches, they always impress me, they went that little further in their attention to details. How about an extractor fan to get rid of the summer time heat?
That's not a bad idea about the extractor!
I promise I'll fit crew and passengers asap! It's on my ever growing list, but it does add a big difference to the details!
That's amazing, did you enjoy it? Which was your favourite to drive?
Hi, there, loving the weathering you do on your stock. I suspect you're not a million miles away from me as I model the South West Trains era. Carry on the great work. Susannah
Thank you so much Susannah! I'm Portsmouth based if that's any help :) how about yourself?
I enjoyed seeing your layout. I too am a loft dweller with a similar layout. Regards Alan in Dover ;o)
Ahhh thanks Alan! Glad you liked it! Loft dweller is a new one on me, but I like it 🤣
Have you checked out my layout via my channel ?? we do have similar layouts :o)@@EmperorsPath
Good to see the old girl back on the screen
I HAVE A NAME!
@@EmperorsPath sorry still learning this pronoun thing 😆

Great stuff. Find this so inspiring with my own layout of Brunswick Yard. Keep it coming! 👌
Thank you dude! Much appreciated
I’ve just come across your channel & what a lovely layout your constructing! I’m also local to Portsmouth, I was born in Milton & now live in Bedhampton so know the area very well. My dad used to work in Fratton depot & my grandad retired from driving at Fratton back in the 1980’s so seeing the layout develop with the landmarks you state is really interesting & the differences in how you’ve incorporated them into the layout.
Hoping to start constructing a layout in my loft in the new year for me & my sons so it’s really interesting to see what you’ve done!
Oh amazing! I'm glad you can relate to it! Thanks for stopping by!
Best of luck to your son and your layout as it develops!
If you have the space, never cut a layout, there is no point unless you need the standing/sitting space to work in. If you do not want the 4th platform, then yes take it out and create extra sidings for stock. Sidings are better than cutting the board down
I'll bear that in mind! Thank you
I would leave the station and storage sidings as it is (use them as part the fiddle yard) but shorten the shuttle tunnel to one section of the retaining. wall just my personal opinion.
That's a good idea! Maybe reposition the line that goes into the tunnel, to be a headshunt instead?
@EmperorsPath yes as then your not wasting too much space either, or you could reposition so you can use a run into the new fiddle yard sidings and that could then allow you to extend some the previous ones for your 5-9 cars
Great to see another SE modeler - enjoyed watching your video - always nice to see EMU's in Network SE livery!
Thank you so much!
Grab some cheapy foil insulation roll from wickes and staple it over your rafters, might enable you some time up in summer. Made a huge difference to my cabin.🎉
Oh wow, that's good to know! Thank you
Yeah, here in Australia I use Radiantshield. A bit like foil-covered bubble wrap and while it still gets into the 30's in the loft it used to hit 50 plus on hot days.
I think the stuff I bought would work out to a couple of quid per metre.
Enjoyed your updates dude! For me I would consider where you get your enjoyment before deciding to rip up sections :) You may find down the line that a little bit of shunting while watching trains run appeals :)
Always a very good point! Thanks dude
I'd keep the station area as is mate probably get rid of the the shuttle tunnel though
Good to know, thanks for letting me know your thoughts Stu!
When replacing the point near the bridge, remember that the 3rd (conductor) rail usually* has a gap by the point blades/tie bar. This is to stop the shoes on the 'frog side' of the train from being broken off when they collide with a solid rail. To see what I mean, watch any cab view video on the Southern Region.
*The only exceptions are where there are many points close together (as at terminal station throats) where 'risers' are installed. This is because, if there are too many gaps in the conductor it may cause 'gapping'. That's where a train stops and none of its shoes are in contact with the conductor rail.
Ah thank you! This is good information! I'll bear that in mind!
OK bare with me on this one! How about cutting out the section you mention, but add a slightly lower section for a lower platform/platforms like Portsmouth and Southsea? You could then have an incline down to it coming from the area where the other lines come from? Could still make the board slightly narrower but would also aid leaning over it?
Oh jeeze! This really is a great idea!
Streamlined by removing the superfluous areas.
I would not add a sevice road along the tracks and only a crews/mainteneance level crossing area to access the yard.
Love the Southern style~
Thank you! Thoughts to add to the list!
@@EmperorsPath One more small thought if I may. in the Scenicked long double track section... which looks great for viewing your fast Expresses. But I would suggest on the narrow section above the track level removing the narrow road (with the yellow van on it) and replace the frost fence with several different types of back yard fences / Industrial type metal fencing. Also Remove the building flats and (Save them for somewhere else) :-) Then use the 'Butt end of rear segments of Hi-Rise Bulding models and the backs of Large Factories instead. You follow me? It would look more realistic and make the trains below look great!
Nice layout, follow you on fb too😊😊
Oh thank you! Good to know! Thanks for the support!
Looks a good project, a whole lot of fun to come
Thank you!
That is a sweet set up. I wish I had some suggestions to help.
Thank you Steve, I just appreciate you commenting!
Like the channel name so have subscribed I’ll view with interest 👌😎☕️
Thank you very much!
Personally if I were you, I would keep the station/ storage sidings as it is- even if you don’t use it actively, stock parked there adds interest.
Good thoughts dude, thank you
The station area is great. The number of lines creates a story of a busy city-type area, and cutting the number of platforms back could reduce the "story" that can be told in that section. I like how busy it is. Especially when you get to lighting, the scene can have a brilliant night scene with some low-relief buildings, and the lights can build the story of a bustling nightlife in the city.
However, the confusing part is the side that begins under the tunnel. I cannot quite connect to the tunnel, and the two "shunting" lines attached to the platforms. That tunnel doesn't add to the story too much.
If you retain the top three lines that come into the station, then the number of platforms can remain. It also connects the city to the prison/housing area near the bridge.
Maybe focusing on the planning of the closer two lines could create some interesting story elements. Maybe not rail lines, but some parking and shop fronts for the station? Maybe a small river, filled with trash? Build out the foreground away from the station, less lines - maybe could work?
Thank you so much, that's definitely something to ponder!
The small tunnel at the front is definitely something that is going to be looked at very soon!
To be completely controversial to what is generally being said I think you should go ahead and remove part of the station. It will leave the station more open and you will get to see the detail you put into the remaining section. Sometimes less is more!! What you take away you can always put back but if you don’t use it, you won’t miss it.
It's a very good way of looking at it! It's given me food for thought!
Leave layout as it is . Coz it looks nice And you might regret it .
Haha thanks dude! That's always the worry
Absolutely tons of debris on the canal section at Portsmouth and Southsea 😂
Haha indeed! It's far too clean and tidy right now!
I’d vote to finish the ‘senic’ section of the layout before you start tearing into the other areas. It’s the one section you don’t have plans to change so might as well wrap it up to a good standard, can always go back over it when you get to the finishing stages of the other sides.
That's a great way of looking at it! Rather sensible too
*scenic.
@@raybeer5213 *Ta, I am appropriately mortified by that slip up 😁
Happens to the best of us!
