That's the one that gets me. Who did this guy think the sign was for? You would think he looked in his mirror at least once while he was sitting there. Nothing but cars were behind him. Unbelievable.
But, the light was green! After it was red and the Over height Must Turn light was on, the red lights then went to green. Presumably for other standard height vehicles to pass. Apparently this driver thought the bridge changed it's mind and figured it'd let him on through since he was already there. Not! Idiot. But I do put some blame on Penske for renting vehicles to anyone who has a license to drive it. They do offer insurance to pay for such damages but most people decline, thinking "I'm not going to pass under the 11'8" overpass." It's no big deal to Penske. They just bill the credit card and go after them in court to pay for damages. I worked for them for a little while.
I’ve got to say “overheight” is not a word people are used to, so for that reason would not have much meaning. And it is a bit vague... WHO or WHAT is overheight? The sign does not say YOU are “overheight”, so the context could be missed. Perhaps the sign should say “Your Truck is Too Tall, Dummy!”. Or “Do you REALLY know how tall your truck is???”.
There's a bridge exactly the same height in my area. For the last 20 years semi driver's refuse to read the signs. 3 strikes a week. The railroad would have a guy on call to inspect it almost daily. Couple weeks ago, the railroad decided to raise and replace the bridge. The truckers decided to ignore the detour and take a side road through the country that has an even shorter bridge over it. Ignoring the warning signs again, There has been a handful of strikes now.
@@Haazziee That's what my channel is about. I know it's a little douchey, but my dry humor can be seen in my short videos. Check out my fledgling attempt, or a newer one like "155 grain projectile happy fun time". Shooting darts is fun.
It also needs automatic road spikes to flatten their tires, flashing blue strobe lights, cameras and audio recording from under the bridge to capture the drivers face as he or she is hitting it saying OHH PHUCK NO!!
Another channel called 'Scanning Cars' did a lot of scans and created a computer simulation which revealed that a truck driver going down that particular street at 35 mph (as most trucks do) has about 3 seconds to react. If you're unfamiliar to the area and focused on following street directions, that may not be enough time. The episode title is '11foot8 Canopener bridge 3D Scanned, Measured, and Animated' if you're interested. Raising the pedestrian crosswalks to sidewalk level would slow traffic down, effectively giving drivers of overheight vehicles more time to think it through. It might additional encourage the most reckless drivers to pick a route without traffic calming measures, further reducing the incidence of --sacrifices of trucks to the Elder Gods-- bridge collisions.
@Frankie Bleddyn One of my first jobs in high school back in the 70's was delivering for a plumbing company. The truck I drove had ladder racks. I didn't remember that minor detail until I drove into a covered parking area and bent the racks back into a "z" shape. These days I'm pretty aware of my vehicle heights. Those kinds of things only happen once.
Agreed. In this case, there's three blocks worth of signage, a speed limit of 25, and the warning sign trigger also starts a red light phase. With nearly two continuous minutes of warnings over a quarter mile, some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive.
I worked at a zoo and you would be amazed at how many people who are just essentially wandering trough life on a daily basis, just a clumsy step away from oblivion
For those that haven't seen the approach street to this bridge from the north going south, the speed limit is 25 miles an hour (yeh, everyone seems to be doing forty or fifty) I'ts actually an area with a lot of small buildings crunched together.
I think the cruiser was on the approach street warning traffic while the extraction was being performed, he's now followed him to the side street to get details and write tickets etc.

We had a covered gate entrance at 11'6' I noticed a Ryder Truck approaching the gate with no sign of stopping and it was signed on its front corners at 12' I stepped out in the drive and the driver stopped and began cursing at me to get out of his way. I demanded he get out of his truck. He did very angrily asked me why I was stopping him. I told him to read the sign on the gate house roof. He said "11'6" ..." I then told him to read the label for the height of his truck he turned around and read " 12'..." it didn't seem to click with him. I said "Let me know when the light bulb comes on..." finally he drew a deep breath and said "Oh!...." Its amazing how many people will hop into a rental truck and not havea clue about the height of their truck and the corresponding clearance of bridges and overhangs....
I've done "delivery" for a few different companies, some of which required me to drive larger trucks. I ALWAYS made sure I knew the height in case I encountered any low crossings. The sketchiest one I had to do was to go to a local YRL depot because they screwed up. It was a very large electrical panel that they were supposed to deliver to one of our customers directly and on time. They decided to not take it the day it was supposed to be taken, so I was tasked with picking it up and delivering it myself. This panel was every bit of 8' tall and in the back of a flatbed truck with the deck height every bit of 4' tall. Not only did I have to be very careful of how I strapped a very top heavy shipment, but I had to be wary of the height. Thankfully I made the trek without incident, but I know if I saw a flashing sign saying too tall, turn right, I wouldn't have just went straight.
@khotan Yes, but the "designer/architect" of the frou frou entrance to the gated community didn't think about trucks --like MOVING TRUCKS that bring peoples STUFF to the homes apparently....and therein began the problem...
I've mentioned before how they need an "X days since an overheight truck hit the bridge" sign right where the driver can see it, hooked to an impact detector that causes it to slowly wind its way back down to zero.

"OVERHEIGHT, MUST TURN"
Driver: i dunno what "overheight" means so...

I then told him to read the label for the height of his truck he turned around and read " 12'..." it didn't seem to click with him. I said "Let me know when the light bulb comes on..." finally he drew a deep breath and said "Oh!...." Tara West Amen.
@Kev Warriner Insurance companies hate these crazy-ass drivers.
