- Puerto Vallarta's Malecón and Romantic District are just 20 minute bus ride from the Princess and Carnival cruise port. Located in the downtown (old town) district this area has lots to do and see. If you want to explore Mexican art, culture, seashore, nature and great food without paying excursion prices this video is for you.
This is more than just a coastal resort getaway. Somehow Puerto Vallarta - also known as "Vallarta" or just "PV" - maintains a small-town atmosphere, while still boasting one of the most unique and sophisticated oceanfronts in Mexico.
We were on a Princess Cruise but this video applies to Carnival, Royal Carribean, Celebrity or any other cruise line. Time tip: Princess ship time is local time and being so close to the port at the downtown Malecon and romantic district means little risk of missing the boat departure.
Mexico is the land of enchantment and with so many beautiful places to visit, it can be difficult to choose the perfect beach destination for your Mexico vacation. On the nation’s Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico will seduce you with scenery, intrigue you with history, and tease you with flavor. All with a relaxed vibe, the city and its surroundings are guaranteed to take your breath away, leaving you to fall in love with everything about Puerto Vallarta. It has a unique combination of beauty, romance, natural wonders, and nightlife, and with the exquisite Sierra Madre Mountains curving around the glistening Bay of Banderas, ecotourism and adventure are abundant. There is also a wide array of bustling clubs, cultural galleries, and colorful shopping to keep all those who visit Puerto Vallarta enthralled during their stay. Dining can be as simple as enjoying the late night taco stands to indulging on the many gourmet options from the diverse Puerto Vallarta restaurants
Malecón, a promenade that stretches almost 1 km, connecting the city's historical center to the waterfront. Grab some refreshment at one of the many cafes before crossing the swinging bridges to Cuale Island, where you can browse the numerous market stalls.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe is dedicated to the patron saint of Mexico and of Puerto Vallarta. The center of the cathedral's marble altarpiece holds the image of the lady. The brick bell tower is adorned with a crown that pays homage to the one worn by Carlota, who was briefly empress of Mexico in the 1860s.
Cuale Island Flea Market is a 2-storey building with dozens of stalls, where you can shop for everything Mexican. From sarapes (shawls), sandals, souvenirs and tee-shirts to jewelry, leather goods and handicraft items, there are plenty of things to include in your shopping bag when you’re in the area.
Puerto Vallarta’s main beach, Playa Los Muertos (Beach of the Dead) is hugely popular, with lots of places to eat and drink and a variety of water sports on offer.

Mirador La Cruz del Cerro is a lookout point topped by a giant cross that offers a fantastic view over Puerto Vallarta and beyond. The mountain is of a modest height, but the hike up is sure to get you huffing and puffing.
Puerto Vallarta is the sister city to Santa Barbara California and is some times called the San Francisco of Mexico. The Romantic district or old town has become very LGBTQ friendly and is has a significant US and Canadian expat community.
