GAPs, FSMA, and Food Safety in Mushroom Production

  • This session covers how contamination is spread, provide an overview of microbial risk reduction, basic food safety practices, and clarify the differences between food safety audits vs. inspection. We also hear directly from Smallhold, a NYC-based certified organic mushroom operation that uses a distributed farming network and local, urban farming hub to sell specialty mushrooms and is a participant in the GAPs certification program.

    Where can I get information on utilizing captured rainwater for:
    1. Plant irrigation
    2. Use as a “potable” source (ie., produce washing, use in a steam sterilizer, use in washing equipment for added value foods/lab equipment) - meaning, is there an affordable filtration system that can be used for the captured rainwater (and if that system would work for well water too)

    I love these videos and getting started interests me since we have been avid mushroom hunters. But because I am up 16 hours a day in the trucking industry, the hour and a half lecture length often means I don’t get to watch them. I would take ten of these videos on the same agribusiness subject, combine them into an instructional 45 minute video for start ups, and leave out all the 20 minute lecture summaries on what the subject matter of the video will include. People will like and save the video all over CZcams.

    RE: the water used for misting in the grow rooms…
    It should start with potable water. However, the mushroom growers who are educated in basic science, will put a UV light system inside the container holding the water for misting!
