Living in the area at the time, we were all very aware of the Back to the Future 3 production. As soon as the film wrapped, we were looking to get access and check things out. Eventually we did - and were fortunate to have one of the productions' extras along for the tour to help us out. This video was taken before we had seen the completed film.
The clock tower was lost to wind damage, but virtually everything else, including the saloon, iconic train depot, bank, butcher shop, jail, undertaker, Joe Statler's horse stables, and Doc Brown's workshop, remained for our visit.
This film set was located on Red Hills Ranch near the town of Sonora, California.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of this set visit! Like and subscribe!

Not all heroes wear capes... they document pure gold like this!!
Thank you đ
I attended a public event not long after filming wrapped. In fact, the saloon still had a Happy Birthday stringer hanging that had been for Michael J. Fox! They served us sarsparilla (root beer) at the bar, The train was also fully functioning, taking folks into Jamestown and I think, Columbia, California.
Thatâs awesome!!
I've walked that area last year. Based on the mountains three peaks you can still find the area. There is some old burned wood there but not much else
It's a beautiful area!
I also wanted to ask if the area had seen any of the wildfires that were burning across the state.
where is it? I wanna try and look on Google maps

@@sbiggs10 I looked at Google Earth in that area and I see absolutely nothing. I know the buildings are long gone, but I see no evidence at all of anything being there.
Just landed there, never knew about all this! GREAT story, thanks for capturing (and posting) this before it all burned. Juan
Thanks!! Glad you could check it out! I just posted the second video of this set visit: czcams.com/video/R9mXe34XBv0/video.html
Wow! Can't believe how elaborate the set detail was.
This is truly magnificent - 30 years!! đź
Thank you
This is History! So glad you captured it. Thanks for uploading!
That saloon was insane. So much detail for a set. It looks rock solid. (Except for the brick facade)
Good job guys brings back memory's.. Nothing left now it's a shame..
THIS IS HEAVY!!

There's that word again, heavy. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there something wrong with the earth's gravitational pull?
@@beezertwelvewashingbeard8703 Great Scott! does that mean the Earth grows in size in the future?
This is heavy duty doc..!!!
a very successful video.
An invaluable value for us fans of the movie.
we thank you
Amazing watch
i will definitely see the entire video !!!
WOW!!! Thank you for posting this video! I just relived my youth:)
Some of these sets are recreations of actual buildings from the 1800's that still exist. The train station, Doc's barn, the Well Fargo building, and the bar. Most of which is actually in Columbia except for the train station which is in Jamestown. The actual buildings aren't set up this way and in some cases are surrounded by modern day buildings that wouldn't have been around back in the 1800's so they built these sets for establishing shots and action sequences that they couldn't film at the historical on sight locations. The sets may be gone but the real buildings they were based on still exist. Jamestown, Sonora, and Columbia are all part of Tuolumne County where most of the movie was filmed.
There's also a fake train caboose which they built specifically for the action scenes because it was too dangerous to actually have Micheal J. Fox on the back of a moving train. I have a video showing the actual train station on my channel cause I live close enough to walk there.
YOU'RE SO LUCKY!!! I would LOVE to move to that area. It's so beautiful! I asked someone else, but I'll ask you too if you guys had any problems with all those wildfires we've been having around the state, especially the past couple of years.
I've been to Jamestown a few times myself and it will take you back in time. Good to know that the buildings they modeled after for the set still exist. Wish the actual set hadn't burned down but I can always watch it at the movies.
@@denisemayosky1955 itâs a great place to visit - when there are fires nearby it can become very smoky for days or even weeks. Thankfully itâs not that often. Side note: this set was also leveraged for the 1994 movie Bad Girls
I am here today visiting and I walked to the location where the airplane is
Be awesome for the fans to rebuild the set and turn it into a tourist attraction
But itâd just be a replica, it was only original once, some people donât mind replicas but I prefer the real thing
@@shanethrelfall416 how is it the replica im the dj and i played it every week the original not a replica lol
@@chrisgemmell2742 Itâs the same with all the replica BTTF Deloreans, theyâre not the real thing, they werenât used in set, do you understand what replica means?

@@chrisgemmell2742 Itâd be heavy for sure, I just wish theyâd saved it in place from day one and looked after the real set, Iâd fly almost anywhere to see that and possibly stay in the saloon hotel đđŒ
We're from the UK and wanted to see where this was filmed. Obviously the set isn't there anymore, but wanted to see the area. Couldn't get past the gates to the farm. Could see the hill behind the clock tower though. Took my breath away
That's amazing - I haven't tried to go back out there since filming this.
They'll watch the video and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic nostalgia waters.
Marty never go to 2020.
Brilliant footage... I know it's mostly all clear land now which is a massive shame... Good to see it how it was though. Thanks for uploading it.
Thanks for taking a look and the kind words. It's been sitting in my closet for years and thought it time to finally get it out there. Really a bummer it burned down . . .
đ Great Scott
This is priceless.. .. Im Speechless good job.
Thanks Marcus!
woow , that was way cool that you were there...Thanks for sharing.
This is very interesting thank you for sharing it with us
I'm a very wealthy man. I have been thinking of totally rebuilding this and turning it into an amuzement part, tourist spot for fans of the film. However, once covid hit in 2020. I halted my plans.....for now.
Great idea!!
Sorry to be a putts, but if it's not the original then it's worthless. Be like putting a Delorean look alike on display that really wasn't actually in the movie. Just be lame. Spend the money to do something else cool..... You'll know it when you see it.
Iâm probably wealthier than you and thatâs a stupid idea even to me.
I'd say if you can get the blueprints...... build it....." they will come"..... if cannot get the blueprints.... then would be worthless.... check with Universal Studio's!!!!
How very cool that you got to capture this piece of Movie History for all to see.. Of course you could have never known then that in just a few years if would burn down and be lost forever!! Nice work and thank you for sharing this!!
Thanks for the comment!
Construcciones altas y conuchp detalle en el interior....

This is really amazing, especially with the commentary from the extra who came along. Can I ask what he did in the film?
Sad that this video doesn't have more likes. It's a great part of the film's history.
If memory serves he was one of the townsfolk populating the set outside on the Main Street.
Too bad it burned down. What a cool piece of movie history.
So cool đđđđđđ thanks for sharing!!!!
This is so cool
Thank you so much for this footage and this piece of History. So the School was on the opposite side of the track, from Hill Valley, to the North, wasn't it?
Yes I believe thatâs correct.

one of my top favs BTTF And Bond they should half the screen down to scenes from the movie with how the sets look now

Great video! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
This side should be put under the UNESCO protection as a world cultural heritage. Greetings from Macedonia !!
Too bad its burnt rubble now
Great Scott! What a great time!
super...
It always bugged me how clean the windows are on the film, I think thatâs the main thing that lets the set down
The panning and cutting is WAY too fast, but what a treat!
I sincerely do not understand why this city does not exist in our time? Millions of fans would visit Hill Walley every day.. Oh, this is disappointing
Yes I agree! That's a great idea for a theme park!!
Cool
THIS VIDEO IS BACK FROM THE FUTURE ALSO
You should edit this with the clips of the actual movie..
Great idea!!
@@jntipton If you want to be copyright striked.
@@Anarchist86ed There are ways around it.
@@roasthunter Yes by getting permission. I'm sure the studio wouldn't mind long as they are quick snippits of the film. It's good way to promote the movie.
I thought that it would be great đ
I remember 1980s we had futuristic Things...
This is great love it would you know if they used this in the set of bill and ted? when they picked up billy the kid
Hmmm - not sure. I do know they filmed some of the 1994 movie BAD GIRLS there before the set burned down
No
Turns out the burning of hill valley from the last episode of the bttf game was canon after all
Well i am doing history about colwyn bay to make sure colwyn bay used to be in olden days

There is a certain charm to videos shot with a potato.

0:45 Someone call Hank. Jesse and Walt have been found in 1885
@3:42 doesn't make sense. Assuming that the position of the clock tower is correct, and I believe your narration is correct; there is clearly a hill along the route that Marty drove in BTTF to reach 88MPH. In BTTF 1 and 2 we see that this is a flat road. Are we to believe that they flattened the hill to create the road?
I am not sure where the gulch is located but the climax on the train tracks was not in this immediate location. From part 1 to this Iâm sure they are taking liberties with time and geography to assume things may have changed a bit.
@@jntipton But they wouldn't move a hill to build a road and businesses. That's all I am sayin'.
@@notenabbers218 gotcha - youâre right!

Is the set still there
It burned down unfortunately
No wonder the clock tower blew down, it says "made in Japan".
Lol
So that is at the end of the current air strip that is owned by someone near the airplane??
Yes - itâs right there. I studied it from above and it does look like it covered part of that
Wow I believe the set is not there now but what year was this filmed at the old set?
They finished production in late 1989 and this was filmed shortly after
We're you not allowed in the schoolhouse or the teachers house?
Does that still exist?
I did not make it out to the schoolhouse - but do know that it was lost as well to the fire
Interesting I thought it all burnt down
Read the description
how long after principle production did you guys get access? seems pretty cleared out on the insides.
Donât recall exactly but it wasnât long after. There are still some people working there - as you see from the vehicles
Where exactly was this?
Why the fuck would someone burn this down??
how'd y'all find the set from back to the future 3? I thought it'd've been torn down after all these years
Yes it burned down in 1994. This is footage I took over 30 years ago that i had in storage and just recently uploaded it.

Probably somone arssing about set fire to it
No, it was a wildfire in the area.
What year was this video made?
The video was filmed right after production was completed - so early 1990.
